Making WiFi Work

The WiFi on the i730 has some problems with Routers, refer to the Router Thread for Routers that work, and the ones that don't.

To start turn off all wireless security (WEP, MAC Address filtering, TKIP, etc) and turn on SSID broadcast. Try connecting to the access point and the internet. If this works start adding security one by one and ensure that the PPC can still connect.

Check to see if your router works with the i730:

Activesync over Bluetooth

1. From my PC, I initiate a pairing between my pc and my i730.
2. Once I enter the passkey, I was presented with services exposed by i730 bluetooth service. One of these is ActiveSync
3. Select ActiveSync and add it on COM 3
4. From your PC start ActiveSync, select File->Connect Settings.
5. Select Com3 from the drop down list and check “Allow serial cable or infrared connection to this COM port”
6. Now from i730, select Start->ActiveSync
7. Then on the ActiveSync screen, Tools->Connect Via Bluetooth
8. That will likely prompt you on your PC to accept the connection, then Active Sync will start immediately.
9. if it is your first time, a wizard will be invoked to help you set up syncing. The only thing of note is that you should only select Exchange server if you have access to one (i.e. most likely if you are trying to sync with corporate email).
10. I configured my active sync to sync my Tasks, Contacts, Notes, and Calendar, but not email, since I plan to get my email via POP

Note, you don’t have to do pairing in step 1. you could simply discover and add the device (i730) and register the ActiveSync service with a port, then pair later.

anyway, everything sync'd well.

There are only two complaints:
-the syncing seems as though it has to be initiated from the i730 (using Start->ActiveSync)
-and as far as the sync'd data itself, it seems to put all my OutLook Notes in the root of My Documents. Wish it would have put it somewhere more meaning full, like "Outlook\Notes".

Activesync 4.0 or Activesync 3.8

As of right now, there is no reason to install Activesync 4.0. This is released for the new Windows Mobile 5 software that has yet to be released to our device.

Also it has been reported that ONLY Activesync 4.0 will work with Windows XP 64 bit Edition. So if you are using 64 bit Windows, you will need to upgrade to Activesync 4.0

You also should not install Activesync 4.0 because it has no option to enable syncing over the Network. This option is in 3.8, but is not present under the "connection settings..." located in the file menu in 4.0.

So if you want to sync via WiFi with the i730, you MUST use 3.8 for the time being. If you don't care about syncing via WiFi, then as of right now it doesn't matter if you use 4.0 or 3.8.

If more information comes out about 4.0 and it has any other items missing or problems, I will post them here.

Wireless Sync Client Reinstallation

The file that is called when the sync client is installed after a hard reset is located in the windows directory on the device, and is name SyncClient.cab. It's a 4.2 MB file.

This file is hidden, so the only way to launch it is to:
1. Open File Explorer on the device
2. Click Open
3. In the Open path box type "\windows\syncclient.cab" without the Quotes.

This will ask if you want to reinstall it, if it is still found on the device, or it will continue the install automatically. This way you don't have to do a hard reset to reinstall it.

Completely Reset Phone to Factory Settings, including SafeStore

First, make sure all information is backed up.

Erase memory in SafeStore. Do this by click Start, Settings, then click the System Tab. Click "Erase Memory", Click Format. This will erase all information in Safestore and soft reset the phone.

Now perform a hard reset.

Your phone will be just like it was when you got it from the factory, except your phone number will still be programmed into the NAM.

Data Disconnecting When Connecting

When I try to connect using the i730 it comes up and tells me it can't connect to the Internet and can not dial.

The solution is to call Verzion and have them talk to the Data Tech Support Team and tell them to double check that your data was provisioned correctly.

Here is a thread that discusses this issue.

Direct all Audio through the Bluetooth Headset

It is possible to redirect all the audio through the bluetooth headset. This thread contains the instructions and help and support information for doing this.

Special thanks to SuperDave for first finding the workaround and the a very SPECIAL thanks to sarcasmsra for perfecting the BTAudio hack and making a program for killing the hack once it's finished.

So see the above thread for instructions and the files you need to do this.

This is the second method of the Bluetooth workaround, but sarcasmsra's method above is the best and most recent work around, this method is left here for archieve purposes and is not suggested to be used.

Currently there is a workaround, and SuperDave is working on a program to make this easier to enable/disable.

Here is the original thread discussing this.

Here is the summary of SuperDave's Posts:

Launch a call from the headest and make sure your in the call and the audio is coming through the headset. Now go to wifi settings and enable wifi. The phone should cut off, but, the audio channel never gets cut. Your headest will probally beep until you turn your phone back on, but, after that all audio should be going through your headset. This may require the reg hack for wifi, hav'nt checked.

This also will stop your headset button from launching vs, but, it will reset after a soft-reset. Also launching and ending another call does not shut the channel down. Clicking the vs button on the side will also go through the headset now, as all audio will.

Doing this VC should work over BT. You just have to launch it from the button on the phone, not the headest. Once you do this and the headset is on all audio except incoming call rings goes to the headset.

Plastic Holster

If your i730 keeps falling out of the plastic holster it came in, please make sure you have CLICKED it all the way in. Put it in the holster then make sure you give it a good extra push, it almost does 2 clicks when putting it in.

Check out this thread.

Turning off the i730

Pocket PCs are not meant to be shut down. If you remove the battery for an extended period of time it will drain the backup battery built in to the device. When this happens, it's just like doing a hard reset. You loose all the information that is stored in the ram on the machine, since you need constant power to maintain information in RAM.

Since flash memory has come way down in cost, and flash memory requires no power to keep information stored, handheld manufacturers are moving to flash memory for general storage of applications, and files. Flash memory is in items like SD cards, Compact Flash cards, XD cards, etc.

This is where safestore comes in. You will be able to place files into the flash memory and it won't be deleted or lost if your power runs out.

So, anything you store in main memory is stored in power dependant RAM. If you use up your battery, and don't charge within a day or so of draining the battery (this is dependant on the device, and I don't know the amount of backup battery the i730 has) then your device will reset, just like a hard reset.

The backup battery is something that they have been including in devices since they were putting removeable batteries on pocket pcs. If you didn't have a backup battery then when you went to swap batteries, you would loose everything and the device would reset. This is why it's good to be quick about swapping batteries out, and not leave them out for an extended period of time. It could be as quick as a half hour or less.

This is why they included Sprite Backup on the device, so you could backup the RAM, which backs up the settings, and files, so that when you hard reset, you just have to copy the files back over.

So you can't turn OFF the device per se. You only need to put it into low power mode. It still uses battery power, but at a much lower rate.

Again, if you take out your battery for an extended period of time, your device will reset, just like doing a hard reset, but you won't loose any information in safestore.

Data Disconnect

While surfing web pages on the i730, my phone disconnects from the internet in the middle of downloading. Why?

Do you have Wireless Sync installed and enabled? If so set the push times to 12:00am - 12:00 am every day. This will cause the connection to stay connected. If you don't use wireless sync, uninstall it.

While using the phone as a USB modem, I get disconnected after (usually) 15 minutes. Why?

Do any of your programs check the internet at intervals. Pocket Outlook's default for checking POP3/IMAP is 15 minutes. In general if any of your programs check the internet (Weather Applications, RSS Readers, Mail programs) you should shut the interval checking off while using the i730 as a USB modem.

Delete Wireless Sync Client

As soon as the device Hard Resets, or when I first took it out of the box, the Wireless Sync Client installs.

You can safely remove this software if you don't plan on using the Wireless Sync Option from Verizon.

Just go to Start, Settings, click System Tab, then click Remove Programs. Click Sync Client and hit remove.

To reinstall it at a later date, refer to this thread, or Hard Reset the i730.

Mobile Edition of pdaphonehome.com

Here is the thread for Help and additional information.

Go to PDAphonehome.com -- if you are automatically logged in, log out -- this will clear out the PDAphone home cookie in your cache.

Now Go to http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/portal.php?styleid=5

The Mobile edition display will appear

Next, make sure you are not logged in (again, log out if you have to.)

Now log in, when you do it will place a cookie on you device. As log as that cookie is present your device will automatically display the pda disply view. If you wipe out the cookie by cleaning out your cookie cache you will have to re-do this procedure.

Also save the above url as a favorite -- named something like "pdaPhonehome - mobile" to facilitate the process should you have to repeat it.

If you have it saved as a favorite, and also have the pdaPhonehome i730 forum saved as a favorite you can easily:

1. open the favorite pdaPhonehome - mobile
2. log-out
3. open the favorite pdaPhonehome - mobile again
4. log-in
5. open the favorite pdaPhonehome i730 forum

Vocoder Audio Fix

If your having problems with audio quality like breaks in the audio and echoing, you might try the following.

The original thread can be found here.

There are two basic algorithms that Verizon uses to transmit your voice in a phone call: EVRC and 13k. EVRC uses an algorithm that dynamically changes how much bandwidth you are using on their airwaves while in a call. this means that you could be using as little as 3k all the way up to 13k, but that varies constantly, and sometimes the variations don't keep up with your conversation and you will hear static and the like. Verizon prefers EVRC since it allows them to push more phone calls through their limited bandwidth. If you set the vocoder to 13k, then your phone will use the maximum bandwidth at all times and you should get the best voice quality possibly all the time.

LET ME MAKE THIS POINT. You should NOT do this unless you are REALLY having problem with audio. If your not having problems, do NOT do this. This increases the bandwidth YOUR phone uses with Verizon's tower, which puts more stress on their systems.

DON'T CHANGE ANY SETTINGS THAT YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY DO, DOING SO COULD SCREW THE PHONE UP AND REQUIRE YOU TO CALL VERZION, OR COULD MAKE IT COMPLETELY UNUSABLE.

Now to change the vocoder, dial **772. (Service Code is 000000). Once in the menu hit the arrow down until you get to the end. At the end hit the right arrow and the Exit should change to More, now hit enter (big blue button in the middle of the 4 way cursor). Arrow down once more and you will see the vocoder setting (Under Orig. SVC OPT.). After changing the value to 13K from EVRC (using the left or right 4 way curson buttons), go to the next option by clicking dow on the 4 way cursor then hit # to save and exit. (slide open the keyboard to press the #, this will issues the save and exit)

Adding phone and e-mail links in Notes, Tasks, Calendar, etc.

Although it's not possible (or at least has not been noted) to add a direct link to a contact's file, you can manually add links to phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

To add a link directly to a phone number for dialing, prefix that number with "tel:". (without the quotes). For example:

tel:555-555-5555

To add a link directly to an e-mail address, so that clicking it will open a new e-mail (you can choose which e-mail account that it will send by clicking the little double arrow in the header, and changing the information under account). To do this prefix the e-mail address with "mailto:" (again without the quotes). For example:

mailto:someone@someone.com

To make it appear as a link, all you have to do is put space or hard return at the end of the link, this will allow you to just click the phone number, or the e-mail address and it will either dial the number, or create a new e-mail.

Also try this, make a new note and with your handwriting, write this:

tel:812555555

Now click Tools and then click Recognize. It will transform it into the typed verision, and now just click the pencil icon and hit the enter key on the keyboard and bang you have a link.

Using the i730 as a Bluetooth Modem DUN

Here is the third release. It has better stability, performance, and new features, so what the hell I'll call it version .9. It might be the last version as it works very well now and I'm really burned out on this.

New/Changed Features:

- Improved Speed. Downloading a single file from a fast site should see 20-30kBytes/s. When downloading multiple files at once I was able to reach 40-50kBytes/s.

- Improved Stability. It used to disconnect for reasons other than a phone app opening a data connection. It doesn't do that anymore.

- Delay at startup no longer needed. It detects when it is safe to load.

- You can now exit the program. Just run BTModem.exe a second time and it will ask if you want to stop it.

- You can safely place BTModem.exe or a shortcut to it in \Windows\Startup. It will not enable your Bluetooth radio automatically. If you use a shortcut, I recommend using the /q command line argument to disable the startup message. If you use the .exe, remember that to delete it you must stop the program as mentioned above.

- Added the /noauth command line parameter if you would like to enable modem sessions from unpaired bluetooth devices. Not sure why anyone would want to do this, but if you really want to make your phone a public internet gateway, allbeit a single-user and very obscure one, you technically could do it.

- Disconnecting is usually faster than it was before but sometimes still takes a long time. It's complicated.

Features:

- Bluetooth Dial-Up-Networking Profile.

- Safely runs in background and opens the modem as-needed.

- Operates independently of the Bluetooth radio. It will not turn the BT radio on or off, and turning the BT radio on or off will not start or stop BTModem.exe. As long as BTModem.exe is running, the modem services will be available whenever the BT radio is on.

- Bluetooth Serial Port Profile, for accessing the modem directly and typing AT commands, etc. Note that if you already have an incoming serial port set up that you use for something else, this port will override that one, so you need to specify the /ns option to disable the modem serial port.

- Bluetooth Fax Profile, but it doesn't work yet, at least not for me. If anyone has success with this, let me know.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Download the .zip file at the end of this post and extract BTModem.exe. Place it on your PDA anywhere you want, and run it. You will see a message that it has started. The new Bluetooth profiles are now available on your i730. You must now go to your PC and pair with your i730 if you have not done so already. Then, on your PC, discover or rediscover/refresh the services offered by the i730. You should see the Dial-Up Networking profile. You should be able to double-click on that and connect. Use the standard Verizon dialup settings (phone number #777, username your10digitnumber@vzw3g.com, password vzw). The baud rate and flow control settings will normally have no effect, but it depends on the bluetooth software you are using. In the event that they do matter on your system, you will see better results using no flow control and the highest baud rate you can select.

COMMAND-LINE SWITCHES:

/q - Quiet mode, disables the startup message. This is useful if you want to place a shortcut in /Windows/Startup

/ns - No serial. Disables Serial Port Profile, this is for people who are using the built-in Incoming Serial Port feature for some other purpose.

/noauth - Allows unpaired devices to connect.

KNOWN PROBLEMS:

- Sometimes if you try to reconnect too soon after a disconnect, the modem won't respond yet. Just cancel the attempt and try again. You probably would have done that anyway.

A good way to setup the i730 for a Hard Reset, or from the Factory.

It has been asked many times on the best way to setup the i730, either after a hard reset, or fresh from the factory. I spent some time (actually, quite a bit of time) typing up my instructions on how I, and let me repeat again, how I setup my i730.

My original post for this can be found here. This is a good place to ask questions, but I will always keep the newest copy in both places.

Everyone's process for setting up their i730 is different, in fact you might not like some of the things I do to mine, and yet some of them you might not think about. This is what I do to get my i730 to a "perfect" pre-synced, pre-program installed state, and to a slighty "modified" perfect, synced state.

1. Do a sync to make sure everything is on the computer that can be on the computer.

2. Backup all files if you are hard resetting. Either use Sprite to back them up, or manually go in and back up what you want. I usually do the manual thing because I would rather do it myself then let a program do it. I normally back them all up to a separate SD card than the one I use on a daily basis.

3. Back up files from SafeStore.

4. Back up files from My Documents

5. Check the Program Files Directory for any files that you might want. Saved games files, saved profiles.

6. Go into any programs that you might want to back up, PhoneAlarm for instance, and run their individual export tools.

7. Basically go through every little thing to check and see if it's something you can't get by a general install.

8. Make sure you have all passwords and serial numbers for your software. This includes all the settings from your e-mail accounts, wireless sync, etc.

9. Make sure you know your Name as it's listed on the Today Screen or in the Info screen, as some programs require this.

10. Go into the "About" icon in the settings/system options. Click Device ID and write that down.

11. Now that you have everything backed up, format SafeStore, this cleans it out so you can reinstall your files. This is what I do because I normally want to do everything from scratch. You can skip this step if you want, you still have to reinstall everything to get the pointers to work, I just clean it out incase I don't want that software to be on the i730 any longer. You do this through the settings/system menu and choose Erase Memory.

12. Pop out your SD card that you made the backups on.

13. Hard Reset and then align screen

14. Do the stupid little tap and hold exercise.

15. Set your location

16. Wait for Wireless Sync to install and close it.

17. Click Start/settings, click memory, running programs tab, stop wireless sync (do this only if you don't want wireless sync)

18. Click X - The click remove programs, and remove wireless sync "Sync Client" (if you don't want/use it)

19. Soft reset

20. Click start - Programs - File Explorer, and navigate to \Windows\Startup - Click Hold the WOWTray icon, then choose CUT.

21. Navigate to \windows\start menu\programs\ - click hold in the background and click paste (this moves the SRS sound object from starting at bootup, and still gives you the option to load it later, just go to Programs and launch it, just saves on that much more memory running in the background)

22. Close all and return to today screen, Now soft reset

23. Click start/settings, click Buttons Icon - Change record button to . Exit Buttons menu.

24. Click Input, Word Completion Tab, drop down Suggest and switch to 4. Click ok to go back to settings.

25. Click Menus, then New Menu tab, Turn on New button menu, then remove Word and Excel from the list (I don't use Word and Excel, no reason for it on the list). Close this.

26. Owner information, fill it out (remember to put in the name you used when registering your software) (Also don't forget Numlocker is not on yet). Click OK (fill out notes and change any other options in it).

27. Click Phone, Change Voicemail number to automatically put in passcode, change ring type to Vibrate and Ring, Click OK (these are the only changes I make in there).

28. Click Today Icon, go to Items Tab, uncheck Owner Info, move it to bottom of list, and move Wireless to top of list. Change timeout to 1 hr. (This makes it go back to the Today screen after an hour of non-use). Close

29. System Tab, click About, then Device ID tab, change this back to the device name you used before. While doing this I also go to my computer and open activesync (not syncing the handheld, just open it), click File, delete partnership, this makes it so you can reuse the name you used before. No spaces can be used in the name, but you can use an underscore. Close

30. Click Backlight, change 30 Sec to 1 min, click External Power Tab, turn off backlight if not in use, 10 mins, click ok.

31. Click Power Icon, Misc Tab, (even thought it doesn't matter), change the phone time to 30 sec, then drop phone down and choose Keyboard backlight, uncheck turn off in daytime, change to 8 seconds. Click OK

32. Click Screen, then Text Size Tab, move to second smallest. Click OK

33. Click Connections Tab, click Connections, Click Advanced Tab, Click Select Networks, Under My ISP, click EDIT, Click General Tab and change My ISP Name to Verizon. Click OK to close that. Click OK again and again until you reach the Connections tab on the settings screen. then close that and go to the Today screen.

34. Soft Reset.

35. At this point I have the "perfect" non-synced, no programs installed phone for me. All settings on the phone work. I have no problems, am able to turn on WiFi and Bluetooth, turn them off, call voicemail without hitting any keys, and all power features are setup. The phone is ready for the first sync.

36. I plug the i730 in to sync. Remember no Partnerships are installed, so you have to set one up. I hit next until the Select Synchronization Settings page comes up, and I uncheck any additional software or items except Calendar, Contact, Favorites, Inbox, and Tasks. I also go into the settings on Calendar and change past appointments to 26 weeks and I change inbox to be 10 days and only do the first 100 lines. I then click next and finish and let it sync. You will notice the name you entered in Device ID showing up in the Sync window and everything should sync. I now do a soft reset, wait until the phone comes on and sync again.

37. After it's finished syncing, I setup a couple of more items, namly, registry editor and numlocker. Both of them are backed up on my computer in a folder called programs, which two sub-folders, one called PHM Regedit, and the other Numlocker. I copy this over to my empty SafeStore using the computer to do it. So in SafeStore I now have a folder called Backup (which is generated by the phone), a folder called Programs (with those two programs listed in it, a zip is attached to this with them setup my way, both programs are free), and there is a ignore_my_docs files.

38. Create a folder called My Documents in SafeStore and delete the ignore_my_docs file.

39. Double click the Programs folder, and double click Numlocker Folder, right click Numlocker.exe, click copy, navigate to \Windows\Startup\ on the i730, then Right click and say, paste shortcut. Rename shortcut to Numlocker.

40. Navigate back to \SafeStore\Program\PHM Regedit\ and right click regedit.exe, navigate to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\, right click and paste Shortcut, rename to PHM Regedit or Regedit. At this point I also rename Terminal Services Client to TS Client to shorten the name.

41. I now pickup my i730, and soft reset it. Yes and I know, I said no software installed, well this was manually installed stuff, and stuff that should have been built in, so it doesn't count.

42. I now edit the registry and make a couple of modifications.

43. I add an entry to make the date show up with the time, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell and then add a string value named TBOpt and value of 3. Other settings can be:

0 = Nothing is displayed
1 = Only the Time is displayed
2 = Only the Date is displayed
3 = Date & Time are both displayed

The normal setting should be 1 (time only)

44. I now remove the click from the today screen, so Setting / Today / Items Tab, and Remove Date, Click OK, then back to the Today screen.

45. Soft Reset. The date should be right above the clock now.

46. I then use PHM again to change my start page on IE to google.com:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Change the Start Page key to whatever website you want.

47. I next change and entry right above the start page called search page. This is the value I change it to:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%s

This will allow you to search on google.

48. I now change my Internet Cache to be in SafeStore instead of MainMemory:

\HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\

I change cache = \safestore\internet\cache
I change cookies = \safestore\internet\cookies
I change History = \safestore\internet\history

49. Now I limit the size of the cache:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\Cache\Content

and change CacheLimit = 3072
This makes the cache only 3 MB in size.

50. I now exit PHM Regedit and soft reset.

51. Now if you go to File Explorer and SafeStore, you should see an Internet Folder. This is where the Cache is stored, and now it's smaller too...

52. I now copy my ringers over to the i730, so put the phone back in to sync, and create a folder in safestore called Ringers. Then copy all the ring tones you want to this folder. These need to be WAV files or Midi files, and these are ONLY the ringtones, no notification sounds.

53. Take the phone off the cradle and use PHM Regedit to edit this key:

HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring

and change Directory = \safestore\ringers\

54. Exit out of PHM Regedit and Soft Reset

55. Go to Settings / Sounds and Notifications /Notifications, drop down event, go to Phone: Incoming Call, and all your ringtones will now be listed in the Ring Tone box.

56. Now I copy the tones I use for my notifications into the \Windows\ directory and setup the reminder, text message, and voice mail. Then after those files are in there, go back to Settings / Sounds and Notifications /Notifications, drop down event, and change each of those notifications.

57. Open Notes Program, cancel out of the current note, and you will now be in the Notes All Folders area, click Tools, then Options. Change Save to: SafeStore.

58. I get rid of the Big Dialer (keypad ready screen), these instructions are in the FAQ.

59. I also open Contact, click Tools, Options and enter my Area Code, this way it auto inserts it when creating a new contact.

60. I go into Calendar and click Tool and options. set it to show 7 day week, click Appointments tab, and change default reminder to 1 hour. I also change the meeting requests to be sent via my main e-mail account, once I get this setup.

61. I now go into the Messaging app and setup my POP and IMAP accounts, not putting on any active connections, and NOT doing a send and receive.

62. After setting up my mail accounts I go into tools and option there and tell it to keep a copy of my sent mail under the messages tab and I switch storage of attachments to SD on the Storage tab.

63. At this point do a soft reset. This is where I back up my phone. It has a few tweaks done, but no major "hacks". This is my absolute perfect setup. Everything works. I have no information in the IE Cache, I have no Bluetooth partnerships, no WiFi networks setup, my today screen is pretty much empty, all my personal information is on there, and it's ready to go. So launch Sprite and make a backup, storing it on an SD card.

Before downloading this file, keep in mind that a newer version of NumLocker is out, in fact, NumLocker no longer is a stand alone program, it's rolled into PhoneHelper. This is something you can get under the HACKS section, just click the link talking about Num Lock.
