Windows Mobile 6.1 + Samsung I760 - How do you set up custom domains for POP email?
Hello -
Please help!
I have a Samsung I-760 cellphone, which has Windows Mobile 6.1 installed. I understand how to setup POP email accounts on the phone without a problem. In fact, I can receive mail all day long without a hitch.
However, recently, my ISP decided to drop server relaying for outgoing mail and I had to switch up my domain setting through my hoster (I have my own domain --- creativeflairdesign.com). Previously, Verizon allowed me to relay my outgoing mail from my domain through their server using authentication (SMTP = smtp.vzwmail.com). Since they have decided to stop that courtesy "in order to better meet the needs of all Verizon customers", I can't send email from my phone. My domain hosting company requires Authentication for outgoing (SMTP) mail, on port 587. I see how to set up the authentication part of the settings, but I do not see how or where to change the outgoing port to 587. Currently, my smtp server is mail.creativeflairdesign.com.
Consequently, I am unable to send email at all. I get an error stating that my email could not be sent - please check your setting or make sure you have coverage....blah, blah, blah.
So....with that said, how do I fix this so I can send AND RECEIVE email on my phone?
To clarify hat I was trying to say in my previous paragraphs, but didn't do a great job of it is this: Verizon has discontinued the use of their servers for outgoing email.
So, the settings here:
Verizon
SMTP server: smtp.vzwmail.net.
Username: your 10-digit cellphone number followed by @vzwmail.net
Password: your password that you set up on the vtext.com webpage
are no longer valid (as the settings page here on the Windows Mobile website promises).
I need to change the outgoing SMTP server to mail.creativeflairdesign.com with authentication and port 587. If I cannot do this, then I need to learn a workaround that will allow to me send AND receive email from my custom domain.
Any ideas?
Microsoft forums have been no help. Over 100 views and no replies. Microsoft said to refer back to my ISP (Verizon) or my domain hosting company. Yeah, right!
My hosting company is 1&1 and I've used their SMTP server (also on port 587) under both WinMo 6.0 (over a year & a half) & most recently WinMo 6.1. Works fine. Based on your comments, I believe what you needs is ...
Well, I was all excited when I saw your suggested settings because they made sense....but apparently not to WM 6.1. I've tried every variation of this setting that you gave and still nothing works.
My server requires authenication for sending mail...I wonder if I am not getting something right there?
I even used the setting: use the same username/password.
I'll be darned. I know I've sent email since upgrading to 6.1 a couple of weeks ago, but after re-reading your posting have just tried again and ... no go!?!? Am I losing my mind?
Thanks for finding the hotfix! I'll be installing it on my i760 as soon as I get home from my morning appt.
Thanks eeyore for the information - Like you, I'd been pulling my hair out over this problem and your fix worked.
First I downloaded the patch you linked too (THANKS!)
My domain is hosted by Earthlink and for them I used:
For Outgoing SMTP Server:
smtpauth.hosting.earthlink.net:587
Then I just checked the "Authentication Required" box and checked to use the same name and password as the incoming e-mail.
IT WORKED!
Overall I've been ok with Verizon over the years - but this dropping smtp service is the one of the most frustrating things I've been through and I'm still very upset with them about it. Thank goodness I found eeyore's thread.
