I just bought a used i730 on ebay and am waiting on it to arrive in the mail. I broke my old phone(samsung sch-u740) which was not a smart phone or pda phone, so I found this forum and I have been sorting through various topics to figure out what will be the best programs for the phone. So here is my question, What would everybody suggest are the best things to do to the phone when I get it, and I am going to assume that it is coming with windows 2003 mobile and will upgrade that. Is there a version of active sync for vista? I'm just looking for a little beginners help. Thanks so much for your help in advance.
I use it for work but not as an entertainment device. The critical software for me is...
eWallet
PocketInformant
PhoneAlarm
PDANet
TotalCommander (file manager and registry editor)
tMan (file swapper and program close application)
S2U2 (Slide2Unlock, "screen-saver" lock)
General software for the i730, just to make it run better or run "properly" includes:
XCPUScalar (fixes inability of Processor to adjust speed up and down as needed)
MRailings Phone Tools (lots of good stuff)
PhoneHelper (more good stuff)
PIN Policy Update from Microsoft (helps avoid white screen of death)
Daylight savings time update from Microsoft
SuperDave's DialParser

ok so I upgraded to wm5 and the difference is night and day, ive been installing some free programs and whatnot, so I went to go install a trial version of a paid program that I intend on buying from handango, but it doesnt seem to want to install with Windows Mobile Device Center. Is there any way around this?

Its likely only made for Windows Mobile 6, or you downloaded the Smartphone version instead of arm Pocket PC version, or because you didnt download and install the one for WM5. If /i may ask which software you talking about?
PointCalc : Samsung i730 : Handango
Thats the link to the program that I am trying to install, its just an exe file, there isn't another option, and it wont open up WMDC.
nevermind, I used a friends computer to install it, but never the less, is there a work around for active sync to WMDC, it would be nice sometimes.
Dual boot XP/Vista so you can use ActiveStink on XP
What is the problem with using WMDC? You said it installed it no? Did you get the right drivers for it? It works for me with no problems via my Vista Ultimate 64 bit OS.
well I installed WMDC and it works fine to sync, but there seem to be a lot of programs that dont want to play nice with WMDC specifically .exe and .msi files.
Edit: I am using a computer with vista which does not run active sync. I used a friends computer to install the program, a .exe file, through active sync. Idk how viable a dual boot of xp/vista is. What about running active sync through a vista emulator, just an idea. Is it possible?

I think there are lots of things you can try having had to deal with Activehell for years now it seems I've become almost an expert on how to resolve the crap that happens with it..not so much with WMDC but some problems may be similar. So basically when you try to use exes and install over WMDC what does it do? My impression from what you said was that it installed but got all messed up in the installation on the ppc or something. EDIT: I confused you for someone else asking about something similar. So it doesnt bring up that box that tries to install when you double click the exe in Vista over WMDC?
well yeah, it brings up the exe install screen on my computer, and then it wont even try to open astivesync, which I currently have installed and need to get rid of, since vista completly blocks it and tells me to get WMDC. I'm thinkin that I'm probably SOL with this unless I get XP on something else, which would be a pain eh I'll deal, that is unless anybody does know a way to maybe open the .exe and edit the lines that call up active sync and change them to WMDC.

wait a second..are you trying to use ActiveSync on Vista?? If you did that probably screwed stuff up a bit. You cant use ActiveCrap on Vista. Do this: Uninstall ActiveSync, reboot, go to the program files folder for Microsoft ActiveSync and delete it. Then use RegEdit to delete any traces of ActiveSync. After that install WMDC. If you had them both installed at once you may want to tdo the same thing with regards to WMDC to make sure when you install it its clean with no problems. YOu can only use WMDC in Vista not ActiveSync. If installing WMDC cleanly doesnt work you can also open ports in your software firewall for it and it should work. But it can only work if you get the drivers for it which everytime I have gotten a notebook I have had to download and install them.
well I think I have things under control now, I have no trouble with WMDC on vista, and I downloaded the microsoft virtual pc and am using that to "revert" to XP so I can install older programs that I want via activesync.
