Just thought I would drop you all a line and say hey. My 730 was replaced by a 6800 af ew months back and so I am not in here as much anymore. Still have a working 730 in the top drawer as a backup. I must say my 730 was faster, and I miss my vertical slider. The 6800 is pretty nice though. Unfortunately, now I have my eyes set on a Touch Pro.
I still don't think any new Pocket PC comes close to the i730. I still use it and love it. I was looking at the Touch Pro but you lose on the screen and no vertical qwerty of course, the Omnia ditto on the screen size/qwerty and weird UI, and the quality of the screens and size don't compare to the iPhone..and I'd have to go to AT&T to use it..Heres to these companies not giving me what I want.
Yep, you do lose on screen size, but the resolutions are getting insane. I guess they think they can make up for screen size with clarity. We are still in the age where they are trying to make everything smaller and smaller. Personally I don't mind the footprint of my 730 or 6800 (almost the same other than the stubby antenna on the 730), but I will say that the difference in thickness between the 2 is noticeable now that I have carried them both for a while.
I also have been using the camera way more than I thought I would. It is amazing what it will do and if you learn the settings and get off of auto mode the pics are really nice for 4X6 prints. All I want out of either model (6800 and 730) is more rom space. 6.1 takes up more space than 5 and so I am constantly fighting those out of memory errors - something I never had to do on my 730. I will say for me that doing the same things with basically the same programs my 6800 is much more stable. I really never have to soft reset. I still do about once a week mostly out of habit.
I think that a phone will have to be truly groundbreaking to make me upgrade again now as VZW is REQUIRING their $30 plan on any new phone from here on out. This I think is ridiculous - I like the option to turn it on and off from month to month based on need and cash on hand.
The things I miss most about the 730 are the vert slider (altho the slider on the 6800 is very nice - love the fn and cap locks with indicators), the great remote control app and IR range (used it more than I ever thought I would) and the faster Processor with the ability to scale it (with 3rd party apps).

Heck Id go for an HTC Shift if it had a phone. I don't care as much for compactness as my Samsung i730 suits me just fine with my Nutshell case and extended 2400 mAh battery. I care about the screen quality, what I'm looking at, the power behind it, and the usable qwerty/typing.

While having a camera is nice, hey wow picture profiles with ease, what a concept right?.. the memory thing is ridiculous.

Now is this for any phone that launches after the 13th or for ANY 3g phone? I CANNOT STAND that they're doing this as I don't want to pay extra for it..I just use WIFI. While having the option to turn it and or the 1x Quick2Net (which you cant do anymore aparrently) on or off, having the data option to switch back and forth from still sucks because they'd prorate you anyways.

I am thinking about getting an XV6800 (again) not only for the nicer qwerty (WHY are they making all these new devices with a LEFT SIDE horizontal sliding qwerty??) which you can open with one hand because it slides from the right but also because of the GPS and custom ROMs. BUT if I find out that if I switched back and forth from that to the i730 that they will put me on the new data package I won't be buying it nor any new phone to use on Verizon. YEa are they STILL not able to overclock the 6800?
OK - talked to Verizon about the whole required data thing it was explained to me this way - any new PDA phone LAUNCHED after the 14th of November will require the 29.99 a month plan at minimum. So as I understand it it is by model. For this reason, you could buy a 6800 off of Ebay or wherever and jump back and forth from phone to phone like double dutch and still be just fine for elective data - YEAH.
This is unrelated, but I won't be surprised when VZW yanks the 6800 here in about a month or so once the Touch Pro gets a foothold. They already yanked the 760 - is it just me or did that bad boy have a short shelf-life.
So, anyway, I will definitely be fighting the urge to get anything new for a LONG time. As I said earlier, it will have to be something groundbreaking (like winmo 7 possibly) to get me to even consider it. For now, it's just me and my 6800 with the 730 on deck as a backup for the foreseeable future.
Dominick, weighing it all out, I would say I am glad I jumped to the 6800 - I love having the cam, gps, winmo 6.1, threaded sms (i hate text messaging, but this helps), better keyboard, custom roms, HTC build quality, HUGE 16gb sd card capacity, and yeah just about everything else. If this bad boy had a vert slider, and more ram - it would be my ideal phone.

Yea that's what they told me too, but I don't know that I should believe them. If someone could verify that that is the option I may pick up another XV6800 to use ..then again the Touch Pro (Sprint) looks pretty fine..

I dunno if that was because of the recall on software for the i760 or it had a shorter shelf life. Its been off of there for a while now I think.

IF Sprints Touch Pro that Mrailings got working on Verizon doesn't force the data plan seems like that would be the way to go in regards to new phones..but I would still use my i730 anyways. Id' probably switch between them that is IF the data plan wasn't required.

I DO like the XV6800 and have been looking for good prices on some..but I dunno about that data package thingy..not convinced yet. I actually only need the device handset because I have a full brand new box of accessories. Know anyone selling one?
Ya, Asurion replaced my i730 with a brand new i760 (they are the only insurance company I can say I like haha).
Don't care much for that 6800, though. I wanna play with a Touch Pro. Hopefully HTC stepped up their game for these new devices. Their build quality has always been terrible.

I have to way in on this...the topic is too tantalizing. My I730 is my backphone as well... I actually like the fact that I now have a phone that I love and trust as my back-up pda phone, though it was getting to me as a full time long term phone... mostly cause it has taken a beating and it showed. I was given a Treo 700WX, an answer to some needed provision! When I was using the 730, I needed more pda than phone, but now I need a good half and half and the treo has done that for me. And now that my 700WX is running WM 6.1...I like it a lot! But, The 730 still sets the standard for me for a lot of things! I actually would like to see something with a combo of many of their features, but of course greatly upgraded. Many of the phones VZW has out there are not much of an upgrade from either of the phones I have or use now! How sad is that, my 730 is years old? This is what is happening with the auto-makers...same stuff over and over and when something of real new and upgraded value comes, everyone jumps ship!
What's the upgrades really? A nicer camera on one and/or GPS maybe, but VZW strips the GPS down...so what then, just a nicer camera? My fingers are to big for a touch screen keyboard, and the only touch screent that really does it for me is the iphone... but att and only proprietary software on a non-business oriented pda phone, no dice. Big memory size or speed upgrade? Maybe, but not in one that has the nice camera and the non-stirpped GPS? Mrailing worked the system to get something going, and if I did think I would haveto brick 8 phones to get one right, then maybe I would try it. But he is still running WM6 and that is what I have too, which was not all that different than wm5 and they still have not given me a four hour reminder postponement option! Grrr! What else is out there that really says to me, I am a huge upgrade from what you have now...I am worth the money and time. The 730 captivated me! The 700wx is great for me right now! Nothing I am looking at has done the same. If my 730 had WM 6 and was not so beat up, I probably would still be using it!
I am telling you...the company that will let me order my phone the way I order a sandwhich at a Deli is going to get my business! If I could order a PDAPhone like I could order a dell computer, and just sit online and get the body layout, form factor, and build type I want, and then add the faetures I would need, would have my business...well other than tmobile, cause I still want to be able to use my phone to make a phone call when I need to!

I must admit I miss my i730 too. I have had a Q, Q9m, and a BB 8830 (just to learn how BB's work) since the i730 and none of them ever really replaced the i730. The i730 had such a great form factor with the vertical sliding keyboard and a good size screen. The i730 with WM 6.1 would pretty much be the perfect phone - too bad it could never happen ... I really wish I never sold my i730 - I had every imaginable accessory for it and I would probably still switch back and forth between it. My Q9m has been really great to me, especially now that I loaded the Q9c WM 6.1 ROM on it a few months back. I just wish it had wifi and some more memory. The BB 8830 was not too bad but it ran out of memory so fast and then wanted to start deleting your calendar entries to save space! The desktop manager wanted to try to delete a years worth of calendar entries from my Outlook one day!
I will now be getting the Samsung Omnia i910 and using that along with my Redly I think I will be in good shape. I just need to get rid of the TouchWiz UI immediately as it is junk!
How do you like your redfly? I keep trying to talk myself into one. I have been following them since prelaunch. I have seen them for as low as 170 in the past month and I have been very tempted. I have read about every review , but I would love the opinion of a fellow 73o geek.
I love the Redfly! I use my notebook a lot less when out on the road with clients, etc. I am now really looking forward to using my Redfly with a phone that has Rev A and WiFi so websurfing and email will be even better because of the speed. Also, there is a good forum with a lot of participation from the Redfly devs over at the WMExperts forums Developer Forum: Celio Redfly - WMExperts Forums where you can get a lot of help.
My SCH-i730 are still wainting for WM7 and no data plan, so maybe WiMax or google?
I may do a data plan if it tethers to Rev. A, or better, LTE.
Right now, I use the data card with the lap top for data. No mor eferret keyboards and low resolution screens for me.
I wish someone would help to get WM6 or 7 on the i730. As far as notebooks I have my relatively new HP HDX with its 20 inch 1080p screen (which I LOVE) but I cant fit it in my pocket.
I finally had to retire my I730 this week. It's painful. The screen calibration shifted on me for some reason and I can't enter my password. Weird! Asurian replaced it, although I had to press them to give me the accessories that I had for my i730 for the i760, like the high capacity battery, data cable, etc. I still haven't got the cradle yet. I may have to spring for that.
Verizon is selling the i760 for $149. With my new-in-2 it would have been $49, about the same as the $50 for Asurian, but with Asurian I can still get a new phone if I want.
I was hoping to limp by with my i730 till the end of 2009. HTC is supposed to come out with a new Touch then. The screen will be about the same size as the iPhone, but it will have a slide out qwerty keyboard. I saw the current European version which doesn't have the keyboard at the Microsoft Windows Mobile display at CES. It was really beautiful. Great display. I was told that they (HTC) was planing on putting a slide out keyboard on it and that it would probably be out by the end of this year. That would be really sweet. I think they said it would have a fairly high res camera (5-8 MP) and it will have the new OS, but I'm not positive about the last two points. (After 4 days of little sleep and information overload, some specifics blur.) It was the only phone that did anything for me. I know a lot of people love their iPhone, and Mike likes the hacked Sprint Touch Pro a lot, which I considered very seriously because of Mike's recommendation. But I just didn't love it enough to give up my i730, pay the $500-800 and have to spend the time hacking it, even though Mike has put in a lot of time and effort into a hack protocol that sounds very tight and would have probably saved days if not weeks worth of trial and error, and probably a few TO's (throwing objects).
O well , life goes on. I'll miss the speed, the plethora of programmable buttons, and the vertical slider of the i730, but I've heard that the i760's WM6.1 MR3 is a much improved OS, so hopefully life will be good.

Sucks man. I got a brand new i730 from Ebay and am hoping to send my original for repairs at Samsung, for like $70. You ever think of trying that with the messed up i730? Which Touch Pro you talking about? Do you know if its a horizonal or vertical qwerty? I LOVED the Touch Pro HDs screen but hated that there was no tactile.. I have my eyes on a few..the Archos thats supposed to come out with 500GBs of room! I was thinking on getting the Archos 5 but this MAY unify all my needs in one..even though their customer service SUCKS, if its for Verizon/Sprint then I wont have to deal with Archos.
The other one is my favorite so far being the Palm Pre. BEAUTY+VERTICAL ONE HANDED QWERTY SLIDER! IF the new Touch Pro youre talking about will come to the US and has a VERTICAL qwerty that may cause me some serious consideration. I guess we also dont really know whos going to carry the Palm Pre or new Touch Pro, let alone Archos phone huh..? Decisions decisions.
the i730 was definitely a great phone! the pre will start with sprint then i am sure it will hit vzw and then a gsm version for att if Palm wants to move big numbers (which they need to). personally i am loving my storm and dont miss WM at all!
I still don't think any new Pocket PC comes close to the i730. I still use it and love it. I also have not been motivated to move on.
Requiring a data plan, VZW navigation only, and crippling the Touch Pro makes me think VZW doesn't want me as a customer anymore after 20 years.
Windows7 and LTE might get me to go on, but then AT&T will have it also.

The only Pocket PC I'm looking at as a possible replacement (though more like a main phone where the i730 is the backup) is the Palm Pre because of its form factor..one handed vertical qwerty. I don't like horizontal qwertys OR non qwerty pure touchscreens like the iPhone. Then again, if Verizon makes me get a data plan with trying to make the Palm Pre work on their network I may only use it as a PDA if at all. I hate what Verizon does to their phones as you mentioned. What's LTE?
LTE is going to be VZW's (and pretty much every other carriers) 4G platform.
The Pre is going to be sweet and have the killer i730 form factor. The OS looks awesome - there are some vids out there now of the webOS SDK in action. Apple should be looking out!
