hello..
so i currently have the motorola q (first one) with verizon wireless. its pretty great. i unfortunately cannot afford a data plan. so i wanted to get a phone with wi-fi, the one being sold now thru verizon are kinda pricy. so i thought of trying to get an older phone with wifi, and i came across the i730.
i know that i the i730 has WM2003, and i have WM5 on the q. I also know that the i730 is upgradebale to WM5 if nessesary. But the real reason for me to switch is for the wifi, and i really want wifi-
for all the i730 people out there, what do you think i should do? i saw some used ones for like $60-90, is this worth the switch?
I don't have experience with other non-samsung WM phones (htc, etc.), but I have had the 730 since its launch, and still carry it today (don't see enough reason to move to the I760). I love the wi-fi on this device. Gets decent signal around my house and at Starbucks hotspots and a few others when I am around. Battery life stinks using wi-fi, but that is to be expected... and WM5 upgrade is a must....
If you can get a good one for that price, I'd go for it... Also, new batteries are a must (unless the used device one are in good shape)... The shop on this forum has 'em for cheap ($10 bucks) I believe... I bought two new standards a few months back...
With a Lion battery you get much better battery life. I get 12+ hours without WIFI, though with WIFI it sucks the battery but I get a lot more life with the lion battery than without. BTW I have both the SCH-i760 and 6800 and they don't compare to the i730. The phone signal as well is no where near as good as the i730.
I love my 730 but you must know its limitations. The most obvious being no camera, and thus no easy way to receive picture, vidoe or audio messages via MMS. You have to log onto the net to get these, it's a pain. The next one being it's 4 gig glass ceiling for memory cards (and you can only get that if you hunt down a non-SDHC card). The last being no easy wifi connection sharing (many may not care about this). There are others but these are the most blaring.
Still, I have to agree with the others in this forum in saying that there has not been anything that has come out yet that has enough of a benefit over the 730 to get me to upgrade. I am looking close for vzw to come out with there version of the touch Pro supposedly later this year, but I have been in the "looking forward to" position for both the 760 and the 6800, and both have let me down as far as having definite innovation over the 730.
I also should list the things that some people may not use, but I love. All of these either are not offered on other models or I haven't seen them:
-VERY powerful Infared port with over 20 ft range and an awesome built-in universal controller program for electronics - didn't think I would but I use it daily
-Vertical slider qwerty keyboard (love it)
-full-size SD card (some may see this as a drawback but I love the universality of it)
-GREAT signal strength
-the best and loudest stereo speakers I have ever used on a phone ( I really do listen to music thru them at times)
-the built-in porgram launcher that is mapped to the lower right key - customizable and gives this WinMo phone the ease of a Palm for quick program access (pardon the Palm reference)
-over all tough design - I beat the crap out of mine continuously
-there are others that are not on the tip of my tongue at the moment, but you get the picture - this phone is definitely dated, but take the time to be smarter than you smartphone and add apps where needed and the 730 still holds a spot near the top in my book.
-MAN, I think I just argued myself right back in love with this old dog.

I agree with everything mknollman said except with the fastmemoryman s 8GB SD Card at Ebay I get 5GBs of use with the SDHC Card. I could say MUCH more in favor of the i730 over the other phones but I'll leave it at that.
Also i see some models on ebay that do have a camera, so im guessing some models do come with it?
one last one - have you guys noticed a big disadvantage with not being able to use the wifi and phone together after being users of the phone for some time now?

The I730 doesn't have a camera - the GSM version of the I730 does (IIRC), but that won't work on verizon's network.
You can use wifi and phone together. I do it occasionally - works great - sucks up the battery though.
Connection sharing on newer models allows you to use your cell phones data plan routed thru the wifi on your device and turns your cellphone into a wifi hotspot for any other device with wifi - its a pretty cool feature - but not a necessity to most.
The whole wifi - phone at the same time was an early issue - quickly fixed, but it was an issue at one time. If I think about it, it is pretty rare that I use both. But its nice to know I can if I want to.
I agree with everything said above. One item to add is that the phone does not handle changing the Processor speed well at all, so an add-on like XCPUscaler or SuperDave's program (dont recall the name at the moment) is necessary to keep it from getting locked in at top speed and eating the battery. Reading the stickies is also necessary...I would've given up on a lot of things if I hadn't had help from the stickies and this forum in general.

XCPUScalar is a must, as is Mralings Phonetools, Phonehelper (both found in the forum), and other third party programs like SPB Pocket Plus that allows you to close windows because Windows Mobile 5,6 etc only minimize them.
I agree with the above, but I will add that all but the Processor are issues with any wm5 phone. I will also add that like I mentioned above winmo requires a more informed user than most - but this goes hand in hand with that incrreased power and versatility.
Listen, did you guys see that the normal WinMo Task Manager is actually accessible from the launcher? If you hit the lower right button, which brings up Launcher, look at the left softkey, it should say "Task". Hit it and there's task manager, where you can then hit the Menu key on the QWERTY keyboard to Stop All if you want. I use this all the time as a quick, 2-button shortcut to switch to already running apps, without having to find the icon again in the Launcher or Start menu, it's awesome.
EDIT: I said "menu key", I meant like the Right-Click Menu Key, to the right of the Windows key on the keyboard. The same thing as on a PC keyboard, usually beside Right Ctrl..
I still like a 3rd party task manager, although I do use the launcher quite often when I want to go stylus-free.
Also, if you hit and hold the lower right hardware key ( the normal one for the launcher ) for 3 seconds you can go straight to the task switcher. I use that option in the car ALOT to go from mp3 player to GPS.
