All of a sudden, battery lasts 1 day - please help!
I have a Samsung i700 running WM2002. I've been very happy with it, but all of a sudden, the fatter (extended) battery only lasts about a day or so, of mostly standby! I have the screen defaulted to pretty bright, and the CPU speed up, but still - it used to give me 3 or 4 days of normal usage before I'd have to charge it again. Recntly I bought a new battery on-line. I put it in, and noticed that it only gave me about 2 days of use. I thought they sold me a bad unit and went back to the original battery. But now it's even worse; as far as I know, none of the settings are different - the thing is set to dim the screen and sleep after a couple of minutes of use, and seems to do so. But now the battery life is drained way too quickly. Can anyone tell me what's going on?!?

It has nothing to do with the device. Its just an old battery. Time for you to order a new OEM battery. Don't waste money on those "so called" cheap batteries. Just do a soft reset before you try anything else. Make sure you are gonna charge the new battery for at least 8 hours before you start using it. then recharge it ONLY when it goes down to 10%. Do this type of cycle twice and your new battery will last another one and a half years. I have had to get a new battery every year as thats what seems to be the natural order of life of these batteries.

That's great - thanks. Can you recommend an on-line source for the "good" batteries? I wasn't trying to be cheap, but obviously found a bad source. What's the best place to order brand new, good-quality extended batteries for this thing?

Interestingly enough, having now bought a battery from the place you recommended and followed the instructions above, my problem is still with me - it lasts a very short time. One thing I noticed is that the screen seems to be on (but in the "dimmed" way) a lot. Even when the battery is going low, it turns on the screen, presumably so I can see the low battery warning. My screen preferences are set to turn off in 1 minute if on battery power, but still it happens. Any other ideas for why it would suck more power (possibly through the screen) all of a sudden? Any other controls for the screen being half-on?

Mike at this point the only suggestion I have is this>>>> do a full back-up>>>> perform a hard reset>>> DONOT install any third party programs yet>>> run the device for a day or two and see if that isuue is still present>>> IF it is then its time to call your Insurance company for a replacement>>>> IF it does not have that issue anymore, it might be "some" program you have that could be corrupt or a file and maybe that is always running in the background and killing the battery. As far as I know there are very few i700's left and they might send out a xv6600 as a replacement.

I tried this, and indeed this problem goes away when the device is in factory condition. Once I restored everything, the problem came back. The screen is constantly on, in "low" mode. Any idea what it might be? I'd really like to use my backup and not start from scratch... Also, when this problem began, I didn't install anything new - I don't think it's any unusual piece of new software. Maybe a corrupt file. Any suggestions for what kind of corrupt system file might keep the screen on all the time?

Could you list out the third-party programs you have, maybe I can duplicate those on my i700 and see which one is the culprit.

Thanks for your help - I appreciate it! I'd hate to impose on you - I've got a *ton* of stuff loaded on here. I'm not sure it's practical to duplicate this, especially because I'm pretty sure I had all this stuff on here before the problem showed up. It's interesting: now that I've cold-reset and restored, the problem is better. It isn't gone, but it's better. Now, it doesn't randomly turn on the screen for now reason, but it does keep the screen on in that low-level state after any event - calendar reminder alarms, voicemails, etc. It won't turn it off, even though I've got it set to "turn off backlight is device is not used for 1 minute". It's making me nuts. Anyway, if this helps diagnose it, here's what's under my Programs menu; could any of these cause the screen to stay on? What about any OS files that might have gotteon corrupted - what controls the screen state (besides the system settings)?

See the ones I highlited in red did a number on my i700. Screen never turns off and it did kill the battery after about three hours. The first three will definitely corrupt the windows registry. Screen Capture and WolfClock were the major culprits. Hope this helps. Good Luck and have a jolly good season and holidays.

That's amazing! It was actually repeatable! I can delete the applications, but will that help, or is my registry now FUBAR? Is there any way to keep my current backup but excise these three? I'd hate to have to start everything from scratch...
And another quick update: I tried doing "Remove Programs" for those few, and it hangs - I get that little clock-thing going (rotating around with different color pie-slices, as if it's in progress) but it never stops. That's a new one - it's never done that before. Also, I wonder - if you know what registry settings those programs specifically messed up (and what their values before the install), maybe a way to get rid of this problem without having to start from scratch would be to put those registry settings back to whatever they were? Is that likely to work?

Darn I wish I had those registry values before it messed up. I honestly recommend you do a hard reset and NOT use the back-up you have. At least you might get to keep your sanity and hair on your head for a long time this way

oh man... Ok; I'll have to reinstall the software, but I also have a TON of settings - any way to back them up, or at least save them to a text file so that I can see what the values are? I've customized the options, VPN and network settings, etc. etc. - any way to save those short of visiting each setting panel by hand (drilling down to everypossible subscreen) and writing down what's there? Thanks!!
