I'm having an internal fight. I sold my IPAQ 5555 so i'm now... PDA-LESS.
I did research and it seems as though every PDA known to exist will be coming out toward the end of the summer. I want to get one now because I just can't wait. I'll pay the price and upgrade later.
GSM gives at best 33.6kbps performance and CDMA has speed that average 60-100kbps data rates.
The XDA II seems to be the best PDA mobile device but the Samsung i700 is on the faster data network and is not much behind the XDA II when it comes to hardware. I need to know if the i700 is bareable because I am a heavy PDA user but I need the Internet to work well for access to my job when I'm on-call.
Whats your experience with browsing the internet with Verizon with your i700
It is excellent with Thunderhawk but not with the PIE standard. Others use Netfront with success. My speed is very good.
I have noticed that my speed and continuity of connection is dependent on signal strength. Need 3 bars or above for good internet experience.
I only have PIE on mine and to be truthful "Surfing The Net" on my I700 is more like "Doggie Paddling The Net"!
When I hook up to the net with my laptop via the USB Cable I get around 80kbs constant but on the I700 itself I think it gets scared everytime it sees a pictures. It will freeze sometimes up to 30 seconds - 5 minutes.
I really do have to look at other browser options. I use the net on the I700 a lot when I am travel for work on the road and one of these days the I700 hardware is going to take the hit for the crappy PIE.
Does anyone know if PIE is better with the 2003 upgrade? That is what I was kinda waiting for.
I agree, ThunderHawk is too much money. I never heard of NetFront before so I am going to go check that out right now.

PIE ain't any better with 03...alternate browsers should be on your agenda for today!!!.

hey, ill put it the way one of my trainers put it when we were talking about the speed of the internet connection over VZW's nationalaccess coverage area:
"we are driving down the interstate @ 80mph, and you are complaining that your internet connection is too slow?!?!?!" i think broadband access @ home has spoiled most of us, but i tend to agree w/her on this one. no, its not lightning fast, but then again, you are wireless, and very mobile. just wait a year, and once VZW rolls out the broadband access nationwide (now only in san diego and washington, dc) you will get what you want.

Plan on getting a browser replacement. Even with the FAQ'd changes to connection settings to remove compression, PIE still doesn't get along with VZW's proxy servers. PIE still frequently reports page not found errors. I've noticed the problem seems to occur most often on sites that use popups, which I find surprising since I don't think PIE should know enough to try to process JavaScript that is doing window.open calls.
Speeds are generally good. I've occasionally run into towers that have clogged networking on the wired side and reported it to the VZW Data group. They've treated the issue seriously, and I've seen real improvements same-day as when I report a questionable area. They don't officially commit to a 40kbps CDR, but they do seem to have such a level informally and internally as their goal.
I have noticed that on a non-phone PDA PIE has no problems loading pages or images and the speed seems to be fairly consistent though not blazing...when I had the 4100 with 03 in it and thru AT&TW's GPRS I still encountered the dreaded "Page not found" error. With the Treo from $print..same issue...I believe till the Wireless Phone providers change their systems we are going to encounter this problem. May be some of the blame lies with MS and some on the service provider....so how come the other "alternate browser" does a fine job for a few dollars more!!???

I use Thunderhawk (paid the $50) and it works fine for me. It's a heck of a lot better surfing than most any other phone (since you basically can see an 800x600 web page).
It does disconnect sometimes (after 5-15 minutes).

I agree. Really, $50 per year for something as great as this is not very much in my opinion. But's it's all relative depending what you spend your leisure dollars on. I think it is really worth it.
