First time post-er, good info on this site, thanks - right off the bat!
Hey, I'm doing my best to love my new i700 as much as the 4 BlackBerries I've used for years and years now ... the display is GREAT and I just love the fact that IE really looks like a browser. I was spoiled with my BlackBerry 7230, so the integrated cellphone / email thing is what I'm having issues with. Well, the cell works good, that's a plus.
What's the deal with email? It's PULL vs PUSH. Any hacks or 3rd party apps out there to use? I'd like to be able to schedule auto-logons to pull email every X minutes. Can do? No? I still have 15 days to take this puppy back I guess - but it is pretty slick.
You can set up your i700 to send you a text message everytime you receive an e-mail. You can also send e-mails through text message as well. Closest way to "RIM" your i700!
1. search this site to find out how to receive sms message when you get an e-mail.
2. To e-mail through sms, text to the number 6245. In the body, put the e-mail address first. Multi e-mails can be added by using commas. create a contact and in email field
No always-on connection for data, yet. The e-mail client doesn't work the same way the Blackberry email clients do, unfortunately. Yes, it is a pull as opposed to push client, and that takes a lot of the usefulness away (especially after using a Blackberry!) I don't know of any scheduler that will go out and automatically pull e-mails for you say every ten minutes (but I don't use my i700 for a lot of e-mail, maybe I'm a bad example.)
There are some third-party e-mail clients out there and there are also some e-mail subscription services that will forward your mail to your i700, but they are not quite the same since you generally still have to go retrieve them after you are notified of an incoming mail.
There are several discussion threads on e-mail and exactly what you are looking for in some older threads. You can search the i700 forum by clicking on "Search" at the top and then entering the search terms "e-mail" or whatever you want to try and phrase it and then select the i700 forum for your search scope. Hopefully some of the veterans on here can help you.
Yeah, Blackberries are on GSM systems (AT&T, Nextel, etc.) as opposed to the i700 which is CDMA. Different infrastructures, different methods of communicating.
Most of us are looking forward to the Windows Mobile Phone Edition 2003 upgrade for the i700 where we should get some functional advancements, including the "always-on" data connection which our e-mail clients will be using to check for mail. But no one knows where or when that will happen.
GSM vs. CDMA has nothing to do with this. Verizon sells Blackberries as well. It is RIM's proprietary push vs. a pull technology and that runs on both networks.

I stand corrected. They sure don't have them available in our neck of the woods, but I guess VzW does sell them. Go figure. Interestingly, the Verizon/RIM press release for the 7750 promotes the "always-on" connection of National Access. Ummm....
