Felix, it didn't turn on your internal GPS, IMO. I played with it extensively on my i910 and Google Maps only found "satellites" when VirtualGPS was on in the background.
VirtualGPS found nearby wi-fi devices then used an internet connection to look up where those devices were. While parked in an apartment complex, Google Maps used "satellites" to tell me I was in another part of the U.S., then yet another after trying to reconnect VirtualGPS, then finally the correct place on a third try after a third connection using VirtualGPS. I can only assume that there were many wireless internet systems in that community.
Without wi-fi turned on, Google was never able to find "satellites", but was able to find between 8 and 12 of the virtual creatures with wi-fi turned on and using VirtualGPS.
If you are able to go to the task manager and end all tasks, then go into Google Maps and still get satellites, then I'd say you are getting real satellites and I'd love to hear about that as it would be very good news.
Perhaps others can post their experience too. Maybe there's something you did differently than me.
