Data Charge Mandatory??

I'm completely new to blackberry as I've been using Palm and windows operating systems for the past few years. I was looking at the new BB 8130 and suprisingly was quite impressed. I'm thinking about making the leap and at least giving it a try for a month. However, the one thing that I didn't like was something that the sales guy told me. He said that the data plan is required with the BlackBerry phones, which is $29.99. Is this really true?

The reason that I don't like this is what if in a year my needs change and I don't really have a need to check email or use the web. Based on what the salesperson told me, I would be married to the data plan for the life of the phone. This is hard for me to believe, however, he said it with conviction.

Does anyone have this phone (or any blackberry for that matter) without the data plan? Was the salesperson correct in what he told me?

To answer my own question in an effort to help others, the answer is a big yes as it relates to the data plan being mandatory. If checking email and using the web is important to you, 30 bucks is a decent price. However, if that's not your thing, then due to the required data plan associated with this phone, you probably ought to look at other options besides Blackberry.

Actually this is wrong...I have inquired about this and there is an option available to pay as you go. I have this option on my XV6700 (where the data plan is necessary) and have checked into this with the Pearl. You just need to speak with the right customer service representative.

You are correct, you can choose the pay as you go option, but in the end it may be more costly than if you purchased the monthly option up front.

Contact Sprint CS and request the unlock code. If you have met your contract terms they will unlock your phone. Now will Cricket take your phone is the next question.
