is VZW 7750 w/web client worth it, or better off with Treo 600?
Would love a response from some of you who have owned both.
Work from home, no server (not even dsl so no wireless sync). Would need BWC with appropriate third party BES/web access.
Been researching 7750 - seems almost no one is satisfied with web access, no matter the third party solution. Is the Treo 600 any better?
How sturdy is the 7750 - I see there is a martial arts instructor on these boards with both. I'll need to run w/my phone (high school coach in my downtime) and my startac has fallen out of the holster on occasion (on grass or turf). Would think the 7750 is sturdier than the 600, as it's plastic.
Customer service/durability - since I'll be signing a 1-2 yr. contract. Seen a lot of posts about defective lcd's on treo. Haven't seen a lot of problems on the BB.
Antivirus security - have learned that using a third party BES can provide antivirus protection. Is there comparable protection for the Treo? (norton antivirus seems to find most netsky and sasser attempts coming in on my business pop3 email - seems to be an infection in the entertainment industry).
Looking to combine a startac and clie. Not sure the treo is better than a clie so might hold on the clie for a while. If I opt for the Treo, toughest thing of course is now or later. Much rather have the 610 w/better resolution. If it was here now, I'd probably go for it. Still, I'd like access to my outlook address book and calendar on my phone and the ability to truly resond to emails.

I'll give it a shot; I have both (and my Palm-ista wife has a Treo 600)
Been researching 7750 - seems almost no one is satisfied with web access, no matter the third party solution. Is the Treo 600 any better? Out of the box, yes. You get the Blazer web browser, using which ever network ISP you purchase the BB from (Cingular, Sprint, T-Mobile, whatever). The browser is OK. I haven't used it that much, so I can't speak to Javascript support, etc. It's not bad.

Would think the 7750 is sturdier than the 600, as it's plastic. I have had the following BlackBerrys: 950, 957, 5810, 6710, 6210, 7230 and now 7730. Never broken one. Never came close to breaking one . Maybe if I held it correctly and Sifu Z. (the martial arts instructor) kicked it it would break Lots of reports of damaged Treos. I haven't broken mine...

Since viruses come from either executables or busted up Microsoft code, I don't lose any sleep worrying about viruses on my BB or Palm. Not on the radar (and I am a paranoid guy).

Then June.
If you want wireless e-mail, get a BB. If you need apps, MP3s and a brilliant color screen, get the Treo. I would probably keep the Clie and get a 7750 with hosted BES service from eOutlook or Mailstreet (neither of which I've used).
NJBlackberry, thank you for your response. Been reading and reading all these boards (and all your helpful responses to others' questions), not to mention the user manuals for each device I had found online. Initially, I had really wanted the Treo - now I think I'll go for the BB - it's lighter, easier to type on and see, and gives me the email and office capabilities I was looking for.
Two other questions:
What will the 4.0 software add to the 7750 (I'll be on Verizon and a BWC customer)?
How do you use two phones on one account? I wouldn't mind keeping the startac for emergency use b/c of its trimode capabilities.
Thanks again for your helpful responses here and elsewhere.
[quote]Originally posted by prf What will the 4.0 software add to the 7750 (I'll be on Verizon and a BWC customer)? I really only have firm information on what 4.0 will do with BES 4.0; I have nothing firm about BWC 4.0 (or whatever they intend on calling it) and I have no clue when an upgraded BWC will be announced. I know that 4.0 will have Javascript support, enhanced attachment viewing (including GIFs, BMPs and some animation) and wireless syncing of contacts, notes and tasks if you use BES and either Exchange or Notes.
If past performance is an indicator, Verizon will release 4.0 about 6 months after the last carrier to do so
How do you use two phones on one account? I wouldn't mind keeping the startac for emergency use b/c of its trimode capabilities. It's a corporate account; I have lots of phones (current favorite non BB device: Motorola V600.)
Your friendly neighborhood kung fu instructor here, with probably little to add other than my two questionable cents worth. First off, an apology - I've been crazy with work (somehow "promo producer Z" doesn't have the pithy ring to it that "Sifu Z." does) so I've been off the boards for awhile.
I do have both the Treo 600 and the Verizon 7750. In a nutshell, I really like both phones. Both are very sturdy. I've dropped each several times during...er...secret martial arts techniques from the art of klutz fu, and they both survived just fine. The Treo has been justly maligned as being delicate; but I've only had to exchange mine once for a dark blotch on the screen. It was a pain, but Sprint was great to deal with and gave me a new Treo on the spot - no questions asked.
As NJ said, there are blackberry enterprise services people like you and me can use. I use Eoutlook, and it's much less expensive than Mailstreet. Without getting into too many details, it's been a little problematic dealing with them. On the plus side, however, I've always been routed to the president of the company when I've had problems, and he's personally set up my device (with me over the phone) the two times I've needed assistance. While the service has been slightly twitchy (better lately) having the #1 guy help you out spells service in my book.
Eric (the Eoutlook guy) has told me that the 4.0 upgrade is going to be amazing. I'm really looking forward to it, as it will allow me to synch my contacts wirelessly. I'm already able to synch the calendar wirelessly through the eoutlook service.
I use the Treo about 70% of the time, simply because I've been able to do a huge amount of customizing on it and it so much fun. My latest addition has been a program called "Lightwave," which allows me to use WAV files as ringtones. Every contact can have a unique tone stored on the SD card, so when they call they get a customized ring. I've got Godzilla roars, multitudes of TV themes assigned to friends and family... Hey, it's fun for me. You can also do photo caller ID and assign the photos you can take with the lousy camera to people in your contacts list. T600 also does email and IM - but it is "pull" email rather than push.
The Blackberry 7750 has been a revelation because of the wonderful BB email service. I get emails faster on the BB than I do on my desktop. I timed it, and it takes about 3 to 4 seconds. I've also got a program that does Instant Messaging - and it works great. Combine these two things with the superb backlit BB keyboard, and you've got a winner for work. I always take my Blackberry with me when I'm busy, which has been a lot lately. Verizon has great reception in Los Angeles, and there have been no dropped calls or lack of data service.
The 7750 screen, by the way, is really good - not as bright as the Treo, but higher resolution. It is far better than the treo in sunlight, BTW. Interestingly, my brother just got a BB from Cingular. I'm not sure of the model number (the unit is blue) and his screen is just awful. The backlight is so dim it hardly makes a difference. I know that some folks don't mind it - but a dim screen would just drive me nuts. The 7750's is very good and blows the Cingular phone away.
So I'd say that if playing games, taking poor resolution photos, goofing around with ringtones, browsing the internet (slowly), reading ebooks...etc. is your thing, get the T600.
If you want to run your office efficiently from your phone, with access to the internet (slower than the T600, but access nonetheless), some games and Instant Messaging - than you can't go wrong with the 7750.
Hope this gave you a little more insight rather than muddy the waters further. I'm just an unabashed fan of both the T600 and the BB! Let me know which you end up choosing!
Oh, and I can't resist this - you know, NJ Blackberry is almost NJ Black Belt! A martial artist in his own right and an obvious master of the Blackberry. Another shout out to you, NJ, from all of us at the kung fu school!
Cheers!

<blush> Thanks Sifu! Nice response to the original question - unfortunately there is no one device that can do everything. BlackBerrys will probably never play MP3s, and right now ringtones are fairly pathetic on the BB. But I think (opinion) the keyboard is better on the BB. The Treo 600 has the advantage of the Palm OS and the hundreds of thousands of apps. The Treo 600 has the disadvantage of the Palm OS, the most hacked piece of software in the universe
The Cingular BlackBerry is the 7280 (color) or 6280 (mon); yes - the screens are dimmer. But the battery life is better on the 7200s. The screen is the key advantage ofthe 7700 series over the 7200 series.
Sifu Z. - we had a guest Kufu master teach a class last week. My legs were killing me (at my age, my balance is not the same as an 18 year olds) It was a blast.
Thanks for your comments. If my Verizon business contact would ever call me back, I think I'll have the perfect test drive. My husband wants to try the Treo 600, and I plan on trying the BB 7750. I'd like to be able to really respond to emails, and I think I might have a hard time typing on the Treo (even though I'd love to be able to carry photos, read ebooks, and play with the Treo).
Do you or NJBlackberry use eword? I think docs to go is great, was wondering if eword is as good. Doesn't look like it has comparable formatting options, etc. and probably tough to navigate with a track wheel. But I think I could actually type something if necessary.
Haven't tried kung fu since I was 9 at summer camp. I think I won the award for being thrown the furthest by the instructor. Frankly, I was petrified (9 yr. old girl vs. what I thought was a 300 lb. instructor). A lot of parents around here enroll their children in tae kwon do. Our son doesn't seem all that interested, but we'll see.
By the way, reading all these posts I came across an interview with one of the RIM exec's who said they're working on next generation of BB's with audio and video capabilities. Makes sense to me.
PRF - Yes, the Treo is as hard to type on as it looks. You get used to it after awhile, but the BB rules in that area. Also, BB has little keyboard "shortcuts," such as the space bar putting in the "@" when addressing an email, that really make things easier.
NJ - Remember that old new wave rock group, Trio? They did the songs, "Da-da-da" and "Anna?" They could write songs for the BB, and they'd sound the same!
Cheers!
Sifu Z.
