I am looking into gettting a Blackberry 7230 with T-Mobile and I'm curious what's needed to do AIM, MSN, and other chatting. I know there are some 3rd party apps out there for this, but can you do it out of the box? Does it stay on all the time? How does it alert you that you have a message if the device is asleep? Is this a separate app on the device from email?
You could also do SMS IM'ing but that would be a pain. And at $.10 it would get expensive.
AIM works ok, its always on, but you can sign out. It's a bit clunky as it doesn't notify you of new messages, you have to keep checking the wap site.
As for MSN haven't checked. Now it seems that there might be some 3rd party apps, that might require a BES to get full TCP/IP access to run, but I'm not sure, I'll find out soon
has anyone found a client other than the tmobile WAP client, im a bit spoiled by the sidekick's aim client and really do not want to switch back, as of now this is the only downside to using the blackberry from the sidekick. any help is appreciated. Thank you.
It is great to know that there are more and more WAP versions of instant messaging.
However, I need more, so I use WebMessenger from http://www.webmessenger.com ...It is vastly superior to WAP messaging and allows Trillian style connectivity using AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo.
There is also now a new free realtime ICQ chat program (capable of running in the background 24/7 for notifications) called BlackChat ICQ now.
The advantage is that such solutions are true realtime, I get instant messages only 2 seconds (or so) after somebody clicks Send on their desktop computer, and they automatically display pager-style on my screen. No WAP browser needed, it runs in the background 24/7 (if you configure it that way). There is a a big disadvantage: You need BES/MDS But now it's easy to get (see my FAQ)
WebMessenger works out of the box for Nextel/Telus Blackberries even with no BES. But it's slightly more complex to get WebMessenger to work properly on T-Mobile, AT&T, Cingular, and Rogers Blackberries, please see this BES/MDS FAQ thread. (Or use WAP version of WebMessenger, but it doesn't work nearly as well)

I didn't notice the Verizon 7750 in your list of services that are compatible with Webmessenger. Do you know if it is?
I use a BES service called "eoutlook." I'm pretty sure it's MDS too - but if you happen to know the answer to that I'd appreciate it! I couldn't find it on their website, and frankly I'm not sure...
Seems like it's worth a try if it'll allow me to chat on AOL.
Thanks for all your help!
