IN THE LATEST twist in the ongoing patent dispute between Research In Motion (RIM), the vendor of the BlackBerry device, and NTP, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) will re-examine the validity of five patents owned by NTP, RIM said in a statement Tuesday.
RIM and NTP have been locked in a court battle over allegations that RIM's products and services infringe upon eight NTP-held patents covering the use of radio-frequency wireless communications in e-mail systems. In November 2002, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia considering a case that covered five of those patents ruled in favor of NTP, awarding the company $23 million in damages.
