Stylus
Its probably not that common for reviews to talk about a stylus when reviewing a Treo... after all it does have a full QWERTY keyboard. With most Pocket PC
PDAPhones, you basically can't survive without a stylus, but it is possible to do most things on the
Treo 755P without one. This is probably one of the reasons that
Palm skimped a little in this area. While its OK, it definitely isn't as nice as the 6600's aluminum barreled stylus. They gave it a metal area where it is held, but the majority of it is a flimsy plastic which I think would be prone to breaking.
I will note that as with all the other
Palm based Treos since the
Treo 600, the integration of the 5-way D-Switch is so well done that you can do most things on the Treo with one hand. Even browsing web applications is easy to master with the Treo.
Syncing & Charging
Treo started a while back not including cradle with their included accessories, so all you get is a sync cable. At least with the 755P, the sync cable does also charge the Treo. In some past models, the included sync cable would not charge the device. I initially used the sync cable to perform the sync of my laptop PIM data. I followed the instructions in the box and installed the
Palm Desktop application before hooking the Treo to the sync cable, and all went well.
After that initial experience, things took a turn for the worst for a while. My employer has us use Lotus Notes and I use Lotus EasySync Pro to keep things connected. I had been using this in the past with my PPC6600, and before that the
Treo 600. I assumed it would be an easy process to just tell it to sync to the
Treo 755P. Well, upon attempting to do this, it did not work at all. After doing a bit of research I discovered that if EasySync Pro were installed via an automated process (which my company uses), that it wouldn't work with the new
Palm Desktop application. Again, back to the research department and I located a way for me to obtain the executable install program to install it manually. I also discovered that the latest version of EasySync Pro had some problem in addition to the loading issue, so I installed and older release.
Now that I had EasySync Pro loaded, I let it do its thing. To my surprise, it took about 20 minutes to do the intial sync. I updated a few addresses, and resynced. To my surprise it took nearly 20 minutes to sync again. Further testing showed that it seems to go through all my appointments with each sync, regardless if they have changed or not. Looking to be productive, I thought I'd make a phone call while it was syncing. While this would not be a problem on the PPC6600, the Treo can't do it. So I'm left with 15-20 minute outages of phone use each time I sync. Ah... its coming back to me why I liked Windows Mobile... multitasking.
The syncing with the USB sync cable seemed to be going OK, so I decided to give syncing via Bluetooth a whirl. After a user error in attempting to set it up the first time, I went back through installing again and it worked right away. I've done all my syncing via Bluetooth since and it works fine. Compared to the somewhat flakey world of Pocket PC Bluetooth, this is a welcome surprise. I have had zero problems with Bluetooth syncing after the intial setup, which was easier than the Pocket PC to setup.
Battery
The
Treo 755P has a 1600mAh Lithium Ion battery which has provided plenty of life for my daily use.. with numerous phone calls, Bluetooth syncing, and some internet access. I believe that the PPC6600 has slightly lower battery life, but comparable.
