TomTom vs. iGuidance navigation software

I really liked TomTom a lot, but just tried out iGuidance. I see it is the same as the old Deluo Routis software, which was fantastic. It solves a few annoyances I had with TomTom. Here are things it does better:

Startup--it takes a minute or two for TomTom to load. This is really annoying when I want to quickly enter an address and get going. The load time for iGuidance is about four seconds.

Navigate to contact--TomTom's method is counter-intuitive and slower. You have to go to contacts and tap/hold, select plugins, select navigate to. In iGuidance you just select navigate to contacts and find your contact.

Finding address by city first--TomTom forces you to specify the city first, while iGuidance lets you go by street first or city first. The maps don't always fit exactly with what is shown in directory information or Google as far as the city. I've run into many cases where TomTom thought an address was in a neighboring city. I don't know who is right, but the net result is I had to guess at and try neighboring cities in order to get there. iGuidance fixes that by letting me specify the street first.

Full screen usage--TomTom insists on stealing the entire screen. This is a real pain when you need to go do something else on the PPC, even get to your contacts to navigate using TomTom. With iGuidance you keep your normal menu bar.

3D view--This is a very nice, fluid, useful view in TomTom. I've been unable to make it work in iGuidance because it crashes the program. When I used to use it in Routis, it wasn't anywhere near as good as it is in TomTom.

Ability to see where you currently are--I've been unable to figure out if there's any way to determine where you are in TomTom. I've often wanted this, for example, to look up something nearby in Google Mobile. Routis tells you your current address or at least a range of addresses on the current street.

Destination side of the street--iGuidance tells me whether my destination will be on the left or right of the street, TomTom does not, and leaves me guessing. iGuidance says, "In 1 mile, destination on the right."

Next turn--TomTom does a better job of telling me the next turn beyond the upcoming one. For example "turn right, then turn left," or "turn right then stay to the left."

Finger on screen--TomTom is more "finger usable" than iGuidance by virtue of always using very large buttons and keys for data entry. You need a nail tip or stylus for iGuidance. That said, I usually end up using a large stylus-pen anyway since it's easier.

Points of interest--TomTom seems to have more, but they seem to be more usable in iGuidance. For example, I can choose to find a nearby restaurant by name in iGuidance, where TomTom only lets me find by distance. TomTom also fails to include bank/ATM locations, which I sometimes need. On the other hand, TomTom has a useful "find on my route" option which is great for cross-country travel and finding motels or restaurants off the interstate. iGuidance just shows them by distance, but you don't know if they are off your path or behind you.

Map display--The display is much nicer-looking in TomTom, but that doesn't mean its a lot more effective. Being pretty doesn't buy a lot when you're lost. There are a lot more options in TomTom, making it more customizable, but some obvious things such as using the full screen cannot be customized. The day/night mode is automatic in iGuidance, manual in TomTom. The night screens in TomTom are not as usable in my opinion as those in iGuidance. TomTom includes the ability to add a lot more display themes and voices, while iGuidance does not.

Data display--TomTom can simultaneously show data such as ETA, speed, distance to arrival, etc. In iGuidance you can only see one at a time and have to cycle through them with a tap on the screen.

Zoom in/out--the zoom buttons are big in TomTom, but tiny in iGuidance. Nearly impossible to hit without a stylus. On the other hand, TomTom forgets my preferred zoom setting EVERY time, so I have to set it every time I use it. This is not a problem in iGuidance, and I rarely need to change it.

Disconnecting from GPS--If I leave the car and don't remember to shut down TomTom, it will either crash the device or make it unusably slow. Sometimes it crashes, won't take calls, and I don't notice for hours. This is a huge problem. iGuidance doesn't do this. Also this means I can enter addresses in advance before leaving a location, then use the device normally, before getting in the car and navigating. This is not possible with TomTom.

So overall, I have to say that neither program is perfect, but it comes down to one thing. Sometimes I wish iGuidance did some little extra thing, or had another feature. However, TomTom often leaves me cursing at it for screwing up horribly. In the end, I can live with iGuidance much better.

Anyone wanna buy a used-only-once copy of TomTom?
