easy way to assign thumbwheel to ringer volume ( like the ppc-6700 ) ?
An incredibly poor decision to leave out a hardware control for ringer volume, in my opinion. But then everybody has different preferences.
So does anyone know how I might assign the thumb wheel to the ringer volume? PHM keys doesn't seem to have a solution to it. There are 2 ways I this might have been accomplished:
1) up or down on the thumbwheel ( in "Today" ) simply starts changing the volume, just as its predecessor did (damn conveniently, and without incident, personally).
2) a single hardware button to bring up the ringer volume dialog, which should then react to the thumbwheel being now in focus.

I actually agree with that completely. It was a very conveint option to a hardware that controlled ringer volume which allowed for easy silent mode etc.
I'd be more interested in option 2 because I like to use my thumb wheel to navigate the today screen.
I was wondering the same thing. Don't know if there's a way since search didn't bring anything good in nor has anyone responded to this thread. But I was hoping for something like your option 2.
Agreed with coming up with a better option for this. Currently I'm going through WMP to set the volume for the device as desired for where I'm at. I'm sure there is a better way than what I'm doing and would like to know it, please.

I don't know if this has been posted before but here goes.
I was navigating through my phone today and I "fat fingered" the directional pad and the system volume control popped up on the screen. Turns out, if you push RIGHT+OK+RIGHT SOFT KEY it will bring up the volume control, then you can use the D-Pad or Scroll Wheel to change the volume.
<edit>
I said LEFT SOFT KEY before... I meant RIGHT.

Pardon me for asking, but if you make the wheel control ringer volume, wouldn't that be dangerous? If you put the phone in a case, or even your pocket, and accidently brush against the wheel, you could turn the ringer volume all the way down without ever knowing it.
You just put your right thumb over all three and push down... I have no other way to explain it. I know the VZ6800 is laid out slightly different than the PPC6800.
I have the xv6800 and this fat finger method wasn't working for me whatsoever. I tried variations of it, pressing 2 of the 3 buttons, varying which of the buttons i mashed first, and nothing. I don't have any of the buttons remapped from their original functions either; maybe the people this is working for do? I really feel like there's no way this could have been intentionally designed into the OS build...
The fat finger method does work however it is tricky because many times contacts will open instead. The trick seems to be to get all 3 buttons fairly evenly. There has to be a way to set a button to those key presses
I can't get it to work on my xv6800 either. I wonder if it only works on a non-Verizon 6800 due to different key layouts or firmware...

Current: Verizon XV 6800 (HTC Mogul)
Former: Samsung / Verizon i730 (insanely great, albeit odd in a few ways), Ipaq 5555 (ok but not great), Toshiba e740 (terrible), Palm V (great, for its time), Palm III, various Sharp Wizards (amazing and ahead of their time!)
so this was not working at all...got annoyed and started pressing all over and over and pop, opened the volume...wierd, but completely useless. never understood why you need a jog dial on a touch screen and with the d-pad and not have a volume rocker, think this is the first phone ever to not have an external control for volume.
I get about a 75% success rate using this method. Like I said above, the XV6800 is physically laid out slightly different from the Alltel and Sprint versions. This may make hitting all 3 buttons more difficult.
