USB & BT Tethering working for VZW XV6800 without additional software or $15/mo plan
I started a new thread because the VZW XV6800 does NOT use ICS as the other phones do.
I just got my 6800 to tether using the built in Modem Link app over USB with my Vista laptop without paying the $15/mo charge. Here's what I did:
1. Make the following registry changes:
HKLM\Software\OEM\WMODEM
add DWORD "CheckProfile"=0
set DWORD "Multi-NAI"=0
set DWORD "WModemDUN"=0
2. Start Modem Link (Open then select "Start" from the menu) with data disconnected and USB unplugged.
3. Connect USB. Windows will automatically download and install the appropriate drivers (you may have to click through some UAC prompts first to confirm).
4. Set up a new dialup connection using HTC USB Modem. Number is #777, user name is your phone number, and password is "vzw" without the quotes.
Now we just have to figure out how to get tethering over bluetooth to work. Any ideas?
EDIT:
If you wish to use Bluetooth tethering instead of USB, install the BT DUN CAB posted later in the thread and re-pair. Then perform the regedits listed above and set up a bluetooth dialup connection. You do NOT need Modem Link.
I am not using the VZAccess Manager software or Verizon's drivers. I am simply connecting the phone to my computer after I have opened and started Modem Link and letting windows search for, download, and install drivers, then setting up a DUN connection like I used to have to do for WModem on the 6700 and 6800.

I posted the link for the people who can't get the drivers to auto-download. Also for the people who want to stay legal - there are a few out there

Here are the drivers I am using on Vista. When you plug in the device you'll see 2 new items in device manager. The first is HTC USB Modem (under 'Modems'), which uses modem.sys and HtcUsbMdmV32.sys. The other device is HTC Diagnostic Interface (Under 'Ports - LPT & COM').
I have followed the instructions and everything is working well. My speed is capped at 115.2 kbps because of my com port. Is there anyway to connect at a faster speed?
Windows is lying to you - the maximum it will show for a com port connection is 115.2; run a speed test but you shoudl be getting standard EVDO speeds.

Mine shows the same thing but a speed test confirms I'm getting EVDO speeds. I just clocked myself at 966Kbps
when I started the modem link and then plugged in my phone, windows wouldn't auto detect the drivers either. I never installed verizon software nor do I want to. I then found just the drivers, not the whole application directly on the verizon website. Here is a direct link: http://www.vzam.net/uploadedfiles/WM...rInstaller.exe
After downloading the .exe I just ran it on my computer (without my phone plugged in). Then when it was done and I plugged in my phone after starting the modem link, the computer detected the drivers properly and my phone now tethers.
After getting this USB tethering operational I found I was able to use this with my bluetooth connection instead of USB. I already had this installed: http://www.winmobiletech.com/sekalaiset/WM6_BT_DUN.cab I double-clicked Bluetooth Modem in my network places and entered info from step #4 above and it connected via bluetooth. I am still concerned that VZW can somehow track this and charge me for tethering.

Great find! Thanks! I'm posting using my phone over bluetooth right now.
Just to be clear, the steps to use bluetooth are the same as above, except make sure you install the CAB, re-pair if necessary, and set up a BT DUN connection. Modem Link is NOT needed.
One other thing: The XV6800 does not appear to support the EDR portion of the Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR spec. My laptop is 2.0 and is maxing out at 360Kbps compared to over 900Kbps over USB
So ModemLink has to be activated in order for this BT DUN .CAB download to work? On my Q, I just pair and connect. No Modem Link activation necessary. I DO have to use it for USB tethering, however.
EDR not supported is yet another disappointment. So I don't suppose it would work via a BT PAN connection either. Yuck.
BTW, is it confirmed that ICS is in fact absent from the 6800? Or is it just "hidden"? On the Q9h, it is there, but hidden and you have to set File Explore to see hidden and system files to find it. The file is IntshrUI.exe or something to that effect, located in Windows/programs I think.
I'm still on WM 5 so I forget the specific details.

Yes, Modem Link does have to be active for BT DUN.
as far as ICS, it is indeed absent, and not hidden. It does not appear that the PAN profile is present either. Gotta love Verizon's crippling. I'm flashing a Sprint ROM as soon as I can. Does anyone know of an extended ROM unlocker?
EDIT:
I was incorrect. You DO NOT need Modem Link if you are using Bluetooth. I am currently posting over a BT connection myself.
2. Re-pair Phone with PC. (Necessary for BLUETOOTH)
3. Set up a Bluetooth dialup connection on your PC using Bluetooth Modem. Number is #777, user name is your phone number, and password is "vzw" without the quotes. (Necessary for BLUETOOTH)
4. Make the following registry changes to your Verizon XV6800: (Necessary for BLUETOOTH and USB)
HKLM\Software\OEM\WMODEM
add DWORD "CheckProfile"=0
set DWORD "Multi-NAI"=0
set DWORD "WModemDUN"=0
5. Connect to BT DUN
6. Start Modem Link (Open then select "Start" from the menu) with data disconnected and USB unplugged. (Necessary for USB)
7. Connect USB cable. Windows will automatically download and install the appropriate drivers (you may have to click through some UAC prompts first to confirm). (Necessary for USB)
8. Set up a new dialup connection on your PC using HTC USB Modem. Number is #777, user name is your phone number, and password is "vzw" without the quotes. (Necessary for USB)
9. Connect to USB DUN.
I am going to pick up a XV 6800 later today. Helix139, could you please confirm the above steps are correct. I tried to put all the steps for Bluetooth and USB DUN together.
Helix139, do you have any idea why the EDR portion of the Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR doesn’t work on the XV6800. It doesn’t surprise me that Verizon screwed that up too. That is why I wanted the XV6800 over my XV6700. I wanted the BT DUN to be no different than a Verizon KPC680 ExpressCard in terms of speed. Is there any workaround to this problem?
Thanks Helix139 for sharing your knowledge.
ExpressCard Pros: Fast, inexpensive, less prone to crashing connection.
ExpressCard Cons: $1440.00 over 2 year contract, sticks out of computer, voice incapable, Bright blue light always on (KPC680), have to remove to place laptop in case, fragile.
XV6800 Pros: $1080.00 over 2 year contract (with option of canceling data plan), Voice capable, always carry with you, Wireless tether w/ BT, PDA features.
XV6800 Cons: Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR doesn’t work as advertised resulting in slow BT Connection, prone to crashing.

Looks correct. As far as EDR goes, it could be a couple things. It may be that the BT DUN profile above does not support it, the stack on the current ROM doesn't support it, or the hardware doesn't support it. I'll see if I can get to the bottom of it.
