Registry hacks are changes made to the registry of the phone to change, improve or alter the phones performance or function. There are many types of hacks for this and other phones, you can search the forum here for the many hacks that have come out already.
Note: Before changing anything in the registry, make a backup of your current registry encase something goes wrong.

For the dialing hesitation, just disable the tone sound in settings for dialing.

Just got my hands on a XV6800 after 15+ years of deliberately choosing the simplest, most rugged basic cell phones and I'm loving the capability as well as the existence of this forum.

I'm a big believer in reading the instructions before crying out for help, but...Help! Aw, what did you expect from a newbie?

My (hopefully) simple but confounding problem is that as I was experimenting with the backlight, I accidentally went all the way to "dark" or "off" with the slider (not knowing it would actually go that extreme) and now I'm stuck with a totally black screen! Can anyone help?

A good friend who has a previous version of this device says that even in the darkest setting, I should still be able to see the screen very faintly by angling it certain ways, but believe me, this 6800 screen is totally dark.

I've tried a soft and hard reset.

Many, many thanks.

haha- that's pretty funny. I just got home from a friends house and he got the iPhone for himself as a Christmas gift. Unfortunately he's a good friend but he always has to have something better than you and he flaunts it. Anyway, I think I made him mad when he was bragging about the iPhone and I asked him if his phone was capable of running navigation software or apps from 3rd parties. He didn't like it when I fired up Iguidance to show him what I was talking about.

Hmmm...you might wanna get that phone swapped out if your backlight turned completely off when you set it to the lowest setting. It should be dim, but still plenty visible and if you did a hard reset, it should have restored the screen settings back to default as a hard reset brings it back to factory settings.

As said above, if you plug it in your phone sets itself to the power baclight settings which are by default set to the brightest setting so that should solve it, but I would still think about swapping it out at the store because it seems like your backlight might be a little too dim.

In fact, here is a picture of my 6800 set to its lowest brightness setting with the flash completely off on my camera and it is still very visible. I guess there is always that rare chance my backlight is brighter than normal compared to others, but every Pocket PC I've tested always had some visibility when it was set to its lowest brightness setting.

Yes! Plugging it in did bring everything back to light, except that when plugged in, it only let me adjust the brightness level when running on plugged-in power, not when on battery power. The moment I disconnected the power, the screen went dark again.

However, it didn't take my pea brain long to figure out that I should just position my stylus in the appropriate spot when the screen was on and plugged in, and when I pulled out the plug, I simply dragged the stylus across the dark screen and up came the brightness!

Thanks to all for such quick replies.

BTW, I even took the device into a windowless room with no lights, and there is simply no visible display when the brightness is turned all the way down. I even waited for my eyes to adjust to the darkness. I truly don't understand why they would let it go this far.

I just ordered the 3300 mAH battery from Seidio. It says it starts shipping 12/31 for Verizon XV6800's. Hope so! I have been using their 3300 mAH battery for my 6700 for a long time.

Betaman - is that a slim battery or the big one? I contacted them about the rubberized case w/holster and got a reply back saying they are shipping next week.

If that's a slim battery I may order one at the same time.

No, it's definately a large battery. It sticks out the back of the phone like a small box of matches.

Not too bad though, for over double the power!

Thanks - I may just order the upgraded slim one instead. I don't need that much power as most of the time my phone is off.

I am a self-employed network engineer and use it TONS! I have a mileage program and Quickbooks program on it, as well as pcAnywhere and use Remote Desktop a lot too. I also tether it to my laptop alot to connect to servers remotely. I keep up with my appointments in the calendar and use the memo field in Contacts to keep up with my users passwords, router setups, network static IP's etc. under the client's contact info.

Plus! I use Slingbox for when I'm sitting in front of a server loading software or updates... boring time... PocketMusic for when Mountain Bike riding (with Plantronics Voyager 855 Stereo headset) AND I have 4 email addresses setup on it!

I NEED THE POWER!!!

Motoring along pretty well with set-up and functionality. Just wondering: Can this device be configured to alert me when an email arrives? (gulp)

Yes. Go to Start>Settings>Sounds and Notifications
Click the "Notifications" tab at the bottom
In the "Event" list, scroll down until you see the appropriate "messaging" notification type and configure it the way you want to!

Works like a charm!

Long time Treo 650 user learning my new toy and the MOS. Read many posts (including this one) before taking the plunge. I really like it so far but much to learn. Thanks for the massive amount of info and I'm sure I'll have many questions.

Thanks, BetaMan. Sadly, Hotmail does not seem to be compatible with the notification functionality.

All the best,

Anthony

Just got the Seidio 3200 mAH battery and have used it for 2 days now. Haven't had to charge it all day yet! (Have and WILL charge it every night though. I am a heavy user!)

An alternate way to get notified with MSN ot Hotmail is to set up email notifications alerts at the Hotmail web page. All you have to do is register you phone & number in the options section of your email. You can set it up to receive alerts from emails you receive, to traffic reports, ect.. The draw back to this method is that it will send a text message to your phone for all the alerts you set up, ie. email, traffic, news, sports, ect.. So depending on your monthly text allowance you may want to limit your alerts to lets say, only alert new emails from contact list only. Anyway hope that helps.

Also just got a Sandisk 6GB microSD and can't get the phone to see the entire 6GB. It only sees 1.8 GB.

I installed the SDHC patch and reset with no difference. I guess I have to wait for the ROM update for Verizon to resolve this issue.

Bummer....
