I can't comment on the i760 comparison, but compared to the 6700, the 6800's battery life has been extremely impressive... I haven't had a chance to put it through it's paces with extensive web browsing or video playback yet, but just in day to day use, the battery life is the 2nd most noticeable improvement over the 6700 (next to the change in form factor)

Thanks for your input guys - I was "on the fence" regarding if I should drop my 6700 and switch to the 6800. I was just talking to a Verizon Customer service rep (kept getting the error code 37 and 3 messages) and they got my problem fixed in about 10 minutes.

How is movie playback on the 6800? The tier 2 Verizon rep told me the 6800 had a slower Processor (not by much) so I'm wondering if the 6800 has more stuttering and hang ups.

I think the Teir 2 rep dosent know what hes talking about..
The 6800 has a dual core Processor one for the phone and one for the PDA side I beleive its still running at about 400 mhz just like the 6700 excpet it now has the ability to split up its load capacity with the phone on one Processor and the pda on the other so it should theroetically perform better.

However ive read that its actually worse at playing video havent yet tried it on mine but will after finals are over..

I just got an email back from HTC Customer service about the ROM that is on the Verizon 6800 and the ROM on the Mogul being the same and this is what they had to say.

"The ROM itself is different than that of the Sprint Mogul and there should not be any of those issues present as there may have been in the Mogul.

As mentioned before, we will get our support link up and running on our web site as soon as possible, but in the mean time here is the link that our site will forward you to as it does with the xv6700:

UTStarcom

You will be able to download the latest software updates from the site mentioned above.

Thank you for your inquiry,

Max"

Anyone want to comment?

I'm not having any of the issues (bluetooth, memory leaks, hangs, voice quality, battery life) that were complained about with the old sprint rom, so experience seems to be confirming what they are saying. I haven't checked against sprint, but there are several numbers after the 2.09 in the version info. Perhaps they chose to designate the verizon rom fixes differently, because they were made pre-release?

<shakes head> ... it still doesn't answer the million dollar question... if the ROM on the VzW is dated from August... WTF has VzW been doing all this time??!!!

Download the latest Mobile Live Search (wls.live.com from your phone) and try to use your keyboard for input....

The keyboard issue is a stupid mistake, especially since it was a known issue with the Mogul, but the fix is easy so I don't hold it against this phone. I'm more impressed with the pros of the 6800 over the 6700, which I notice more day by day.

First, they finally made an interface that doesn't look like Win95 any more, so I've said goodbye to some extra apps I used previously to give the OS a facelift, making for a lighter, faster UI. Also, the battery life is quite a bit better, the screen brighter. Outlook no longer turns on the screen every time it checks for mail, saving a bit of battery.

The form factor of the unit lends itself better to gaming withhout the keyboard, even without the ability to press multiple buttons at once. I like the addition of the top face buttons.

The stylus (though not used much in my setup) is much improved. The telescoping feature actually helps keep the stylus from falling out, since it telescopes about an inch before the tip disengages from the internal latch. The rest of the time, I don't even know it's there.

The new Outlook and Camera are easier to use and configure. All of my old apps still work, and fit on the device storage. Well, everything but VJCandela. OS seems more stable too.

Any complaints I have about the phone are easily fixed by utilities found on this site, and actually there are far fewer issues out of the box then there were with the 6700. This is the phone I really wanted about in the first place, but settled for the 6700 because it was the only PPC on Verizon.

Well, got my 6800 yesterday. Have loaded my usual apps and so far, no issues!

Seems to respond faster than my 6700 did.
I like the size compared to the 6700.
I LOVE the keyboard layout MUCH better than on the 6700. Much more useful!

Haven't tried to tether it to my laptop yet, but I will today. I use that feature A LOT! (I'm a self-employed Network Engineer!)

I have installed Voice Command 1.6 and can't get it to work through the BT Headset yet, but I haven't played with it much.

So far, so good!

(Just wish the darn thing wasn't BLUE!)

2nd Update:
Voice Command started working on it's own! I just reset the device and it started working through the headset as it's supposed to!

Also, I keep reading of the Sprint BT issues, and so far, I have had NO issues with Bluetooth! On TWO different headsets! (Jabra JX-10 Series 2 and the Plantronics Voyager 855 Stereo)

More to come...

Which release of VC are your running? I've been trying since yesterday to get mine working correctly, sometimes when i press the button, the mic symbol would show and work but today, it hasn't worked at all.

Oh why, oh why did verizon block bluetooth ftp transfers? i found that easier to upload the cabs then having to plug in the usb all the time... they didn't block it on the i760....

Just as an experiment, I install the DivX player and used DivX Converter to transcode one AVI into an AVI using the mobile profile and crushed the movie to 215MB video @ 30FPS, 48Kbps audio (I only have a 512MB memory, and this was sufficient for my test). The results were very impressive. Didn't notice and skips nor audio sync issues. Seeking is a bit slow, but that could be an issue with the player, but a bit of patience is all that's needed.

I got to play the 6800 today in one of the Verizon stores, I really like the weight and size factor (doesn't feel like a brick like the 6700 does). I'm really tempted to order one next week but my main concern is the video playback issue (TCMP with Divx converted movies). Well - I got my answer while I was typing this - THANK YOU!

I also love the fact that it has an 8 gig mem card so I can load up the entire Iguidance map (2 gigs right there) plus a ton of movies and music.

The blue color didn't bother me much - I'm thinking of getting the rubberized black case from *gasp* siedio with a holster.

If it doesn't work out then I have at least 30 days to send it back and reactivate my the 6700.

I stopped by the local VzW store. They have a demo unit there. I played with it for a while and did some comparison with my XV6700. The following are my comments:

1. Screen size appears to be the same as the XV6700.
2. I don't like the d-pad. The joystick on the XV6700 works better for me.
3. The keyboard is nice and has good typing feedback to my fingers.
4. The opening of the keyboard no longer turns on the phone as in the XV6700. But this might resolve the issue with the magnetic carrying case. Since it was controlled by a magnet on the XV6700, the magnetic carrying case can accidentally turn on the phone.
5. The keyboard has a spring on it and I am not sure how it will hold up after a year with 10,000 open and close. It might break easily.
6. The loading of web pages are much faster than my XV6700. I guess the faster Processor helps. It loads fast even on graphic intensive web sites.

To recap, there is no other converged device currently on the market that can provide all the functionality and feature this device can provide....especially the full size QWERTY keyboard and the hack-to-your-heart's-content environment. I probably will go ahead and upgrade to it soon.

760 comparisons

xv6800 pros:

form factor ... more buttons to play with and the send and end buttons are on the front ... also I like the way the keyboard opens opposite of the 760 ... 6800 is a little shorter but a tad heavier ... feels good in the hand though ... might just be an old dog and new trick thing ... but the 6800 feels like a pda for me

touch screen ... not "mushy" I don't get the errors I did with the 760 when touching the small letter keyboard with the stylus .. and I actually think I can see it better outside than the 760 ... but not as well as the I730

accessories ... innodock jr, sync -n- charge, screen protector, car charger from 6700 all work with this phone ... although the innodock jr has the phone sitting not quite centered

Stylus is a tad beefier .. not a biggie but feels better to me ...

I like where the sd card goes .. but I would of liked a door like the 760

No power connector cheesy cover ... although after a month the one on the 760 is still there ... surprised even me

power button on the side ... right where your finger sits ... makes it easier to turn the phone on ... hated the button on top of the 760 ... power button is where the start menu button on the 760 is

Other than the Q9m ... this is the first pda phone to be able to stream xm consistantly at my spa ... okay ... not a biggie but it tells me the radio is stronger than the 760 .. the spa is right on a 1x/evdo line ... most phones would jump back and forth and loose xm ... the 6800 doesn't loose it ... so I don't need to connect to my wifi prior to connecting to xm ... just a step saver ... I also notice I'm at 3-4 bars in the house where with the 760 I was at 1-2 ... but I'm sure this varries with individual phones

way more storage memory ... about the only thing I load on the storage card now is movies, music, tech manuals, backups, and maps ... all programs are on the main memory and I still have about 120 meg free for storage ... way kewl

wifi on/off button ... I really like this ... once you've configured it to your network ... turn it on .. it connects ... no fuss ... no wireless manager .. simple

760 Pros:

front number keys ... although with spb plus and smart scrolling I don't miss them as much as I thought I would

battery door part of the battery ... the battery door on the 6800 is kinda cheesy ... but I said that about the Q too .. and it's still fine after a year or so

extended battery ... I haven't got one for the 6800 yet ... and probably won't ... both phones have awsome battery life so I haven't had to use one yet ... I'll probably spring for a seido 15 percent bigger but fits like the standard battery ... like I did for the 6700 ... mainly as a backup when I might be watching 2 movies or something like that ... or camping etc.

maybe just a tad peppier than the 6800 ... but not so much as it's an issue with the 6800 ... not as huge a difference as the 6700 vs the i730

more WOW factor ... LOL ... the 6800 has been around for about 6 months, albeit on sprint ... so more people have seen it ... the 760 turns more heads ...

weather panel ... works on both phones ... but on the 6800 when it's installed, spb backup has "issues" doing automatic backups .. not so with the 760 ... not sure why ... but I had the same issues with the 6700 with wm6 as I do with the 6800 ... I DON'T have these issues with the 760

In call volume ... out of the box the 760 wins hands down ... but with the fix on the 6800 forum I was able to hear fine .. and I'm deeeef ... maybe me, but I think that fix helped with the speaker phone volume too ... ringer and notification volume is good on both

Picsel Browser ... used it to view my tech manuals for pool service ... but the 6800 comes with adobe reader so that works too

Things about the same:

Battery life ... both awesome

data speeds ... seem the same "its' the network"

Program memory is the same I haven't noticed any memory leaks on either phone, but I reset every night at 3 am when it does a backup ...

Camera ... of course they both aren't very good ... 6800 may have slight edge here ... 2m vs 1.3m ... but I can't tell the difference .. but I'm old ... I'm just glad both have cameras ... both do what I need them to do ... take a quick pic of a pool or spa issue so I don't have to carry a camera all the time

Stylus ... they both are a little ungainly ... tiny even ... but the 6800 is a little beefier but still too short ... I miss the big old clunky ones of the 6600 ... sigh .. I know ... old dog syndrome

Overall ... I'm guessing I could give 100 of each phone to 100 different people ... and 50 would prefer the 6800 and 50 would prefer the 760 ... the preference thing again ... but I like the 6800 ... mainly for the form factor .. looks and feels like a pda ... still works well as a phone ... but "feels" like a pda .... well ... until something else comes along ... heeheheehe

Voice Command 1.6

VC 1.5 doesn't work with WM6
