Question program memory vs. storage memory

I seem to remember a slider in start-->settings-->system tab-->memory that would allow you to change the allocation of memory between storage and program in the old hitachi g1000 and the ppc6600....

Any idea how to change this allocation in the 6800?

My default settings are 162.55 for storage and 47.46 for program; that just deons't seem fair.....

Before Windows Mobile 5, program execution and all storage were in ram. If ram failed, you lost everything, plus you had to try to balance the allocation. There may have been some separate flash storage, but main storage was all ram.
Starting with WM6, ALL of the ram is allocated to running programs, not storage. A separate flash is used for storage (and usually the OS). So the 162.55 is the remaining flash, and the 47.46 is remaining ram. About like the hard disk versus the ram in a PC. And now if you lose ram, no problem, it just reloads from flash. MUCH better.

I've been using the new SK Tools for freeing up RAM and its a lot better than the older one. Now I'm a but happier using my Mogul since I have some decent breathing room till 2008.

Good info. That explains the lack of the slider I'm used to. But my issue is my TOTAL program memory is 47.46. I have 33.13 in use (from spb pocket plus?) and 14.33 remaining. Is there any way I can increas my free memory for programs? Is this anything I even need to worry about?

Adjusting the OS/Storage memory balance

The xv6800 comes with 256mb of flash ram divided into 92 for the os and 164 for storage. My E740 and e750 toshiba PDAs used to adjust this balance on the fly so that the free space on both was always nearly equal. you could also manually adjust this when you had to run more things and wanted less built in storage.

Was that a toshiba only innovation? Has it been dropped for some reason from WM? Is there a hack out there that allows this manual adjustment? I've got a 4gb storage card and loads of free storage on the built in. I;d rather adjust the storage space so that I don't run with 99% used memory...

I seem to ask tough questions that don't get replies, but does anyone have any info on this?

You can build a custom ROM for the 6800 and use a tool to change the PagePool size.

I just went in search of ways to increase my XV6800's program memory, since the low memory warnings are making me crazy.

I found this thread. But before I install the above file, i was wondering if there is any documentation on it so I can know what to expect or what to do?

If this helps me run programs without constantly having to stop and restart because of low memory, I'll be very glad.

Send a message via ICQ to Marctronixx Send a message via AIM to Marctronixx Send a message via MSN to Marctronixx Send a message via Yahoo to Marctronixx

have you done the obvious first, such as:

clear old email messages (sent, deleted, draft, etc)
clear sms messages (sent,deleted,draft,etc..)
clear PIE cache, history,temp,cookie folders?
make sure you close out unused programs
relocate programs to storage card to free up memory
delete anything you dont use.

above steps are more safer than having to build a ROM--especially if you dont know how to or are not comfortable with doing so.

You mean program ram, not storage rom.
Program ram is used by running programs (and a huge amount by the OS, which you can't do much about).
So what do you have running on the Today screen? Do you have things in the background running like Voice Command? Do you have a program closer to close program out of ram instead of putting them in the background in ram?

I just did a little test:
After a soft reset:
Program mem available 16.6, storage mem available 71.0
With Internet explorer running:
Program mem available 15.2, storage mem available 71.0

I cleared the history and cahe in IE, then did a soft reset again:
Program mem available 16.1, storage mem available 77.3
With Internet explorer running:
Program mem available 14.5, storage mem available 77.2

So IE cache just impacts storage ROM and the running IE (on a simple web page) uses about 1.4 meg of RAM. I'm sure that is true of stored emails and none executing programs, they use storage ROM, not program RAM.

Windows Mobile Team Blog : RAM, ROM, NAND, NOR--that's a lot of capital letters...
