Remote view and control Phone from your PC for free

First off since this is my first post I am sorry if it is a repost but I searched and didn't see any threads that directly titled or mentioned the remote viewing or controlling of the phone from your PC. If there are some threads already started Just let this one die off.

I was looking around for a free app that would allow me to view my phone's screen remotely from my local Workstation since I work in a basement and have to have my phone high in the air on a shelf to get a good signal. When it is attached to my workstation the phone's screen is just too high up to see easily and I wanted to be able to see the caller ID of incoming calls before I answered it with my bluetooth headset.

I found two programs that worked well for my purpose either one will work by itself but other people may desire to use the programs in different ways so there are advantages to each.

1. ActiveSync Remote Display
2. PocketVncServ

1. ActiveSync Remote Display - "Display Pocket PC applications on your desktop or laptop without needing any device side configuration." It is part of the old Windows mobile power toys.

Power Toys overview
Download details: Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys

Direct Download Link to the
WindowsMobilePowerToys.msi

Download the Windows Mobile Power Toys and run the install on your PC.

Go to the folder where you installed the power toys and open up the "ActiveSync_Remote_Display" folder

It should be like this if you accepted the defaults.
C:\Program Files\Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys\ActiveSync_Remote_Display\

The "ASRDisp.exe" is the client that runs on your PC. If you run this as it is you will get a unknown CPU error so the way to get rid of that error is to right click on the "ASRDisp.exe" and make a shortcut to it then goto properties of the shortcut and add a "-m" switch to the end of the target "ASRDisp.exe"

It should look like this
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys\\ActiveSync_Remote_Display\ASRDisp.exe" -m

Now go to the folder where you installed the power toys and open up the "ActiveSync_Remote_Display" folder then open up the "Devices" folder then the "wce400" folder then the "armv4" folder.

It should be like this if you accepted the defaults.
C:\Program Files\Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys\ActiveSync_Remote_Display\devices\wce400\armv4\

Now copy the cerdisp2.exe and KillProc.exe to your phone. (I put it on my memory card but they say to put it in the windows directory but mine works fine from the card)

Once the shortcut is made and the files are transfered start the "ASRDisp.exe" from the shortcut on the PC then go to your phone and start "cerdisp2.exe" from the phone. Tap OK at the welcome screen, then tap "Connect" and then tap "OK", I accepted the defaults and it starts right away showing your phone on the PC where you can now navigate and view it from the PC.

Now for those that like VNC

2. PocketVncServ

Download PocketVncServ_v0.8.zip

Unzip it and copy the "pocketVncServ.exe" to your phone. Again I put it on my memory card, I have some stability issues but it worked most of the time.

If you have a VNC viewer on your PC then use it, I used my Ultra VNC viewer but the site where I read about this free one recommended an older viewer that can be downloaded here VNC Viewer

On the Phone start the "pocketVncServ.exe"

On the PC start the viewer and use the ip address of the phone that is connected to the PC. By default from what I have read a good ip to try first is "169.254.2.1" (without the quotes and by default it is port 5900) click connect and your phone should come up.

On your phone there will be a small VNC icon put on this free version I found of the server there is no real way to configure anything but it works for me.

I have no idea why it changed the colors but it works fine could be set to 8 bit by default.

Here they are both running together at the same time

I take no credit at all for these programs or even the walkthroughs in a sense besides my own testing. All this information was gathered from other sites from doing a ton of searches looking for a free solution to view my phone from my PC. All credit should go to the programmers and their great work at providing free software for us to perform this remote control procedure on our phones.

At first I found a pay version which looked great and I still may purchase it since the guy seems to still be working on it and it has many more options for being a server from other connections even from outside your local network via the Internet. The pay version is like 10 Euros and can be reviewed and purchased at Pocketvnc it also has a nice tutorial for connecting to a pocket vnc server and should be reviewed if you are having problems with the second connector there based on VNC.

I found the microsoft version to be more stable and it never crashed during my testing. The VNC did several times but was easy to restart. I hope others find this useful like I have and I do apologize if this has all been posted before.

I have been using CERDISP, the Microsoft Power Toy, for years. I love it.
