Freedom mini GPS Bluetooth receiver

Edit: If you are interested in discussing the NEW, smaller Freedom Keychain GPS 2000, please see the following thread:

http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6...ps-2000-a.html

This current thread should be used to discuss the original Freedom Keychain GPS:
Freedom Input Ltd - Freedom Mini GPS

Just picked one of these up and thought it might be of interest to other members of the forum. As far as BT receivers go, its pretty standard other than the fact that its very small, made to be worn on your keychain. It has a miniUSB port for charging (comes with both a car charger and a miniUSB cable). The on/off switch is pretty tight so there is practically zero chance of you accidentally turning this thing on while it is in your pocket. I have it working just fine with TomTom Navigator 5 on my 6800. I've attached a few pics so that others can see the relative size (sorry they're a bit blurry, took them with the mogul). The receiver is about the same size as your car's remote control, just thicker. Of course, the best part about this receiver is its more than small enough to carry with you wherever you go so you can always have a GPS with you. Not as great as having a builtin GPS obviously, but this is the next best thing IMHO. If you want to purchase one, send an email to sales at freedominput dot com and ask them to send you a Paypal button as the company is based in the UK and they don't have the option for you to pay in US dollars yet on their website. Cost is $99.99 plus shipping.

That's too expensive for GPS receivers these days. You can get "better" ones at half the cost.

Yes, this BT GPS receiver is a bit pricier than others and you could get an arguably "better" one for less money. But that's not the point of this device. The main selling point of this BT GPS receiver is its size, its the smallest one currently available on the market, allowing you to take it anywhere with you on your keychain. The same cannot be said for all the other BT GPS units out there.

Yeah, pricey, but electronics that can fit on your key ring is an A+ in my book.

considering the size of the device, that's a very reasonable price.

I ordered on a Thursday morning and it got to me on a Tuesday. Shipping charge was $30, "Royal Mail International Signed For Service," it was the only option. Ya, pretty expensive I know but I had been eyeing this unit for a few months now and was willing to pay whatever price the second it was released. However, I have just asked the guy I was corresponding with at the company if he would be willing to do a deal for the forum members here and I have reason to believe that is a definite possibility. I directed him to this thread and asked him to please post whatever offer he was able to make here. So if you are interested in buying one, keep an eye on this thread for the next couple of days (I will post an update if I here back from him as well). I think the unit is also now available on mobileplanet.com for about the same price but with a smaller shipping charge so that is another option as well. But again, I believe if he does do a deal for the members here, it will be worth waiting for so don't pull the trigger just yet if you don't have to.

Offer from Freedom Input for Mini GPS Receiver

Hi,

This is Chris Macsween from Freedom Input Ltd. Marty has asked me if I would extend the offer I have made on another Forum to this Forum for our Freedom Mini GPS Receiver.

So, I have just joined your Forum and yes, I am delighted to extend the following offer to you for a limited time.

The offer is:

The Freedom MIni GPS Receiver for $89.99 with no shipping charges.
I can only do this for a short while until the product is in stock with our regular distributors worlwide. I can only extend the offer in US dollars.

If you would like to take this offer up, please email me at chris@freedominput.com with your email address. You can PM me or post here too but I will need your email address if you want to buy the Mini GPS Receiver.
In case you are worried, I only need your email address to send you a paypal button for the reduced payment of $89.99 per piece. You don't need to have a paypal account with the button. When you click the button, it will take you to a secure payment website where you can pay with your credit card.

BTW, Chris stands for Christine, Marty! But I answer to most things!

I will look into this forum regularly now so if anyone wants any help with our GPS receiver or with our Universal bluetooth keyboard, then PM me with your phone number and we will call you and offer our help.

Lovely to meet you all and I look forward to talking to/helping you all in the future.

Best regards,

Chris Macsween

Would be nice to know what GPS chip is inside this puppy. There are several GPS chips out there that differ radically in the ability to pull in a weak signal. If it is sitting out of line of sight in the car, would be good to know it has one of the high end chips in it. For example, the Holux 236 that I have can be way out of line of sight and pick up a signal, whereas their earlier models cannot.

That is correct, SiRF Star III

I'm biased (I work for Freedom technical support) but I do love this GPS receiver. I used it in the car to drive from SE kent to London and it managed to keep up with me and tell me exactly where I was along the motorway.

More impressive was once I actually got into London I managed to find my way to the meeting without getting lost which is a first for me (My sense of direction is terrible).

There are more impartial reviews out there on other forums but I'm not sure what the linking policy is for this forum so wont put in any links.

Yes please stick around and answer questions. I'm searching for an excuse (and good hardware) at all SAT NAV to my phone and this might just be what I needed.

Also let us know if you have any "recommended" or favorite software choices as well.

Thanks!
