Why are background images made lighter?

I have an image that I am trying to use as my today screen background image but when I choose it, WM seems to make it hella light, like all fogged over or something! I tried making it darker, even REALLY dark using Photoshop but it still comes out really light on the device. I'm saving it as a simple .jpg with dpi of only about 150 and at 240x320 for QVGA.

PLEASE, how the heck do I fix this?

Thanks!

Also, also is the best format to save it as for quality? Thanks!

I just use a jpg, but here's what you need to do:

1) Open Pictures and Videos
2) Click on your background image
3) Click on menu and set as today background
4) Set the transparency level to 0%
5) Enjoy your new background!

THANK YOU. Had this problem the very first day I got it. I gave up almost immediately.
