Text Messaging Woes

I've noticed over the past week or so that every couple times I soft reset my phone, I lose a few text messages from my inbox. Sometimes these texts are several hours old.. and I'll even have replied to them. I'd say this happens about once every 4 soft resets I perform.

I've also noticed that my phone will randomly wake up while sitting next to me on my desk, but not alert me of anything. No new texts, MMS, calls, wifi connections, etc. It is NOT plugged into the computer or wall outlet. It did it twice this morning, so I did a soft reset. Did it another two or three times in the span of about an hour. I had made and received several phone calls during this time. 10 minutes ago a friend sent me a text asking if I was alive, saying he'd been texting me all morning (also on Sprint). I didn't receive ANY of his text messages (delayed or otherwise).

I am using the original ROM (2.08.651.4), which I will update this evening to see if it fixes anything.

A quick list of programs I have installed:
IM+
Resco Explorer
PHM Registry Editor
HTC X-Button 1.51
ContactManager
HTC-Home
Arcsoft's MMS
Handmark Scrabble
SKTools
PockeTTY
Handmark On Demand

My first impression would put MMS as the culprit, but I'm really not sure. Only things I have on my today screen are the HTC Home Plug in and IM+.

I'll post up my experiences after I install the latest ROM. Just wanted to see if I anyone else had similar experiences with their 6800 and maybe knew of a definite fix..

TIA!

1. For the text messaging issue, its a simple explanation. The 6800 simply has not written the recent changes to your device (in this case, recent text messages) to the flash ROM (it does it every so often throughout the day but I don't know what the exact interval is). The text messages are still in RAM when you soft reset (so they haven't yet been written to the flash ROM) and thus whatever is in RAM is lost when you soft reset. I haven't tried it yet on the 6800 but on the 6700, taking the device in and out of flight mode forced a write to ROM. A method I currently use is that SPB Pocket Plus has an icon you can tap to soft reset the device (instead of using the stylus to poke a hole) and by using that method, that also causes whatever changes in RAM to be written to ROM. I believe there are some freeware apps out that will also accomplish the same thing (soft reset and cause a write to ROM) but I forget their names.

2. The phone randomly waking up is a common occurence with many smartphones. It happened all the time with my 6700 and same is true with the 6800 (has something to do with the network). I believe we have a thread on it somewhere in the forum but don't bother searching for it because the conclusion is that it is normal for the 6800, everyone's 6800 does it.

But if you aren't getting text messages, you may have some other unrelated problem but as far as the phone randomly waking up, that happens to all of us, nothing to be worried about in that regard.

I had this same problem with the not receiving text as well. It lasted for 7 hours. I wouldn't of even realized if my gf didn't call me thinkin i was ignoring her. I also was thinking of SMS being the culprit.

Thanks for the replies. The RAM/ROM saving bit makes sense. I'll have to get Pocket Plus I guess, setup a quick soft boot icon.

I did read that other thread a while back about ActiveSync always polling, email accounts getting checked, etc. as reasons for the phone waking up at random times. I don't want to rule that out completely, but I'm pretty sure it was trying to tell me I had a new text message Oh well, I'll sort everything out.

Thanks again.

I wouldn't get Pocket+ just for the soft reset icon, its not worth it if that is the only thing you are going to use it for and its overkill. Like I said, there are some freeware apps out there that accomplish the same thing, I just forget what their names are.
