As a followup, if the serial number is valid, and it's not authentic, did everyone who purchased one of these get the same serial number?
Model number is: SDSDQ-4096
Serial number on mine is: 0709302340D. Anyone else have this same serial?
After mine stopped working in the 6800 (would constantly crash Pocket Mechanic during the full benchmark), I decided to contact SanDisk, and after a long ordeal in getting them to issue me an RMA (they even cancelled it, and I had to reply and ask them to un-cancel it), they provided me with a UPS shipping label. I don't know if yours came the same way, mine came in a second brown sleeve, so I'm just using that to ship it.
tbird, are you sure? Your serial number is one digit short. I took a shot with a macro lens on my DSLR, and got a very clear answer, I'll post it here. (I've scaled it down via Photoshop (was originally over a 2.5MB image, even cropped) a *LOT* to save space on this forum, but it's still quite readable.). Also, those of you who bought cards from Verizon, where is your "Class 2" logo located? Please reference this image and compare, if you can. Thanks.
Okay, good. That still leaves us with a few people that still have the same serial - which shouldn't be the case. Any VZ card people have a different layout?
the VZ store here didn't have any.. Marc.. can you take a macro pic of the front and back and post it? Or just tell us how close it is to the one pictured here?
I just got mine from Nextweb. I could not read it in the card reader but neither could I read the supplied 512 card. It had the expected amount of RAM and I copied files from the 512 to the 4gig without any issues using Explore PocketPC. Unfortunately I checked the serial number and it is the same as what has been posted 0708902340D. So I guess we have been duped.
even if it isnt a sandisk card what is wrong with it if it works? from sandisks point of view i understand someone is stealing their name and i could understand if the card doesnt work at all for us but it does work.
I bought a new card from a Verizon store. There are interesting differences. The serial number copied 0708902340D is missing digits. One might say it is because the serial number is growing but the difference is after the D which to me seems like an incorrect serial number. I have D01. The serial number is not easy to read but the Verizon numbers are crisp. Where as my Nextweb card looks like the ribbon was running out of ink. The numbers are uneven in clarity. They also are much fainter to read. I need a magnifying glass for both but the nextweb almost needs a microscope. The Nextweb has a triangle next to the name SanDisk pointing on its side like an arrow. The Verizon has almost a closed letter C with the number 2 in it.
One last thing that should have been the clue. The Verizon kit comes in a bubble wrapped package. While I don't expect to see the Nextweb name on their bubble wrap like Verizon I think we should have expected to see a SanDisk bubble wrap. It only came in the small plastic container. They may say they sold it that way to save on postage but I bet SanDisk would disapprove removing even a good card from their packaging.
Marctronixx,
Yes, agreed the case has the same setup.

We bought the card with the belief it is a Sandisk product and they stand behind it. It is more than just someone stealing their name and punching it on a card. There are many reasons why this is bad and to name a few;
1. If too many people bought fake products the "real innovative company" could not stay in business or have the money to create the next best card or phone or anything we surely will want to buy.
2. The cost to us will increase because they have to recoup the lost sales.
3. Buying a fake means we are supporting a black market that is probably supporting illegal activities.
These are not prudish answers. The cost to the consumer is large. It is easy to say they make so much money who cares but if they can't make a profit, if they don't have the money to do research and development, then we lose. Research and development is very costly. On a selfish note I bought a card I thought was made to Sandisk standards. Even if it is working now we will not know how reliable these fakes are in the long term. Current performance will not guarantee future reliability and when it fails who will be their to replace it?
