Can you read the screen when outdoors?

The 6700 was absolutely horrible outdoors. Is the 6800 any better?

I just did a little test in direct sunlight. I was able to use it, but its not very bright outdoors in the sun. Side by side, its almost exactly the same in viewing as the PPC6600, if that tells you anything. This is interesting because the 6800 is a lot brighter indoors. I was able to read my appointments and navigate to contacts and place a call, but you definitely wouldn't want to to anymore than you had to outdoors.

I can tell you about the Q--it's easier to read outdoors than the Mogul (though not much).

Yeah, I just went to lunch and its high noon and I couldn't see anything from my office to the car but I made a call anyway using VC1.6!

The Q is excellent in sunlight. I routinely used it as a GPS on my motorcycle.

I'll have to compare it with the 6800.

This may be a dumb question, but is there no brightness adjustment to make the backlight bright/dimmer?
I.e. Start -> Settings -> System tab -> Backlight ??

Yes you would be able to make it brighter, but the problem is when outdoors, your eyes are adjusted for the much brighter lighting, which makes the phone screen appear very dim in comparison. A true transflective screen would help, but I'm not sure that's what they are using.

The 6800 is horrible in sunlight. But I just purchased a clear anti glare screen protecter from boxwave. The anti glare ones have really progressed, they used to make the screen milky and blurry but I have to say this one is 99% crystal clear (not quite) and cuts the glare down to almost nothing, well worth it.

An Antiglare screen protector is about the only way to go if you want to have good visibility in high sunlight. I never could get use to the feel of antiglare or the blurry/miliness SpineDoc mentioned, so I always use the crystal clear. However, its good to know that the boxwave have improved their antiglare.

If you do go antiglare, stick with boxwave and avoid any cheap ones as you will pay for it in longevity, application and appearance.

The PPCTechs antiglare one are excellent, too. I've been using them for years. Ordering more today, in fact, since I always sell PPC's with them still installed.

The 6800 needs an anti-glare screen protector to be useable outside. The Treos are much, much better outdoors but both are about the same brightness indoors.

Maybe the Palm Treos with their brighter screens, but the 700wx screen is MUCH dimmer and worse outdoors than the 6800.

My Treo 650 is superb outdoors compared to my 6800. I wouldn't say the 6800 is bad though... maybe below average versus both the Treo as well as a bunch of Sanyo phones I've owned.

Indoors it looks like a very bright, vibrant screen.

Yes, and the 650 was dimmer than the 700p which is dimmer than the 755p. Comparing the 755p to the 6800 outside makes the 6800 look like the screen is turned off, and that's with just a crystal screen protector on the 755p, not an anti-glare one.

I just did a test of a WriteShield anti-glare protector and I think it was a little better outdoors, but still not great. You can definitely use it outdoors... but I wouldn't want to read a book with it in that setting.

Seeing the light, bright sunlight, that is.

Is it just me, or is the 6800 horrible in bright sunlight.

Prior to this, I had a Samsung i730. It was also worthless in bright sunlight.

I never see this covered in any reviews and never think about it until after getting the device. Then, there isn't much to be done.

So are all of the 6800s like this?

I agree with what the others have posted. The 6800 is almost unviewable in direct sunlight and I'm using a PPCtechs anti-glare protector also but I have found that sometimes angling the device makes if more viewable but not by much.

If you use it the car on a mount then the screen is pretty clear since your inside.

Hope that helps.

Still stuck with this phone as not too happy with the other Sprint choices.
