Enable/Disable EVDO (Force 1X or EV-DO)

I don't know why they hide this option, but for people living on fringe areas as I do, it is nice to be able to force 1X or EV-DO on or off.

To do so:

1) Obtain a registry editor (I just use total commander)
2) Navigate to \\\registry\HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting\
3) Change the value of 'HiddenModeOperationPage' from 1 to 0
4) Save
5) Soft reset

It didn't seem to want to remember the value of 0 for me the first couple times, and I'm not sure why.

What this does:

-Adds an item to the list at 'Phone - Menu - Options - Services (Tab on bottom)' that is named "Mode of Operation". The default value of this is Hybrid, which will prefer EVDO, but will use 1X when not available. I seem to get better reception at home if I change the option to 1X Only.

As a side note, there are a couple other 'Hidden...' pages in this registry directory that I don't have time to play with right now. Maybe someone else will figure out what they do.

On most EVDO phones, you can force EVDO/1xRTT by dialing ##EVDO#. Does this work on the 6800?

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm in the same boat, for most places around town I always have full 1X but it keeps trying to go into EVDO and when it does it only shows half the signal antenna meaning 1 bar or less so it then kicks right back to EVDO. It sucked but fixed now! Thanks!

I seem to have the opposite problem. I'm in a heavily EVDO area, but I keep getting dropped down to 1xrtt. I recently picked up the 6800 (as in got it this last Tue. 7/4/07) to take advantage of EVDO speeds. Previously I had a 6600. I do have the sprint power vision access pack so i should be legitimately getting the faster speeds. Has anyone else had this problem? I called sprint tech support and have a ticket open, so hopefully that will resolve it. Otherwise I might try the hack to force EVDO.

My guess is they have not yet moved you over to their Ensemble Accounting database, or if they have, the EVDO in your account has been set/reset to Disabled.
Call them and ask them specifically if you have been moved over, and what the EVDO is listed as on your account.

Thanks guys for the response. I was told after talking to the tech support gal that I'd be getting a call back from some sort of supervisor within 24 hours or so. So, I guess I'll wait until that to ask them if I've been fully enabled. Odd though that the original girl (who seemed knowledgable) that she wouldn't have picked up on something like that. I had called into their wireless web support line. On second thought, I dunno if I can really wait for someone to call me back. I want to enjoy faster speeds now! hahaha.

i asked the tier 2 guy to provision me to Ensemble and he said he can't, it'll slowly get transferred over.
edit:#2. Is there any detriment to forcing EVDO? now that i've forced it i'm finally getting EVDO -like speeds (only 500kbps =( ) but does it hinder anything on the phone? battery life... reception? if not imma just keep ti on this puppy.

A quick update on my issue. I had the account de-provisioned.. then re-provisioned.. and I'm up and running at EVDO speeds.

oh thank god! let's hope this work for EVDO only, I hate it when my phone is in data session and drop to 1xRTT but do not drop the data connection, causing me to miss call (since 1xRTT does not allow "ring through"?)

Can you explain "had the account de-provisioned...then re-provisioned"? I am having the same problem. I am in an EVDO area, my phone says EV is available, but it will connect in X1 only. I upgraded from a previous flip phone that had the vision package, so I should get EVDO, but I don't know if I ever did on the previous phone,
thanks, Mike

What is considered EVDO speeds

Hi,

I have been round and round with sprint about the data speed on my Mogul both with just the phone connecting to the internet and using phone as modem.

I typically see less that 100 KBps (KiloBytes) not kbps (Kilobits).

The impression I get from sprint tier 2 is I should be seeing at least 400 KiloBytes per second.

Any help or clarification appreciated.

Thanks,
EddieZ

400kbps(kilobits) is more like it

100 KBps (kiloBytes) = 800 kbps

on average I see between 300-700kbps and on ocaasion 700kbps-1.1mbps

400KBps = about 3.2mbps

if you look at the EVDO spec... that's impossible with Rev 0

EV-DO Rev. A:
Downlink - 3.1 Mbps max; 450 - 850 Kbps typical
Uplink - 1.8 Mbps max; 300 - 400 Kbps typical
EV-DO Rev. 0:
Downlink - 2.4 Mbps max; 300 - 500 Kbps typical
Uplink - 153.6 Kbps max; 60 - 90 Kbps typical
CDMA 1x:
Downlink - 153.6 Kbps max; 60 - 90 Kbps typical
Uplink - 153.6 Kbps max; 60 - 90 Kbps typical

The reason some carriers choose to keep this option hidden is because setting to EV only causes two HUGE problems:

1. SMS cannot be received (previously mentioned)
2. Incoming phone calls cannot be received.

Imagine Joe User setting that to EV only (because who would want to use 1x when EV is available) and then realizing his phone won't ring anymore. Thinking it's busted, he calls or goes to the Sprint store pissed off and demands a replacement for his "broken" phone. It's potentially a support nightmare.

So feel free to use it but do so knowing that setting it to EV only will keep calls and text messages from coming through to your device (some of you may even find that desirable in "do not disturb" scenarios).

Thank you so much for this post. I have a Sprint Mogul, and I have been looking for this feature for a long time. I went to Sprint store, and their techs did not know how to do this. My place of work does not have good reception, so it keeps switching between roaming and Sprint mode. Using a Sprint Airave I get 1X boosted, but the phone keeps switching between Airave and a faraway Sprint EvDO tower. What a nightmare. I wish those idiots at Sprint that disabled this feature had thought about how many people could utilize it. Up until now. I had to put my phone on the Roaming Only mode at my work, and this has cost Sprint money. But now I can put it on Sprint mode with 1X only.

I wish they had a toggle switch in the upper task bar of the home page that would allow me to do this switching by just tapping on the EV/1X icon and use a drop down menu. If anyone can build a program that can do this, it will be great.

EVDO / 1X Toggle Switch for wm6 to conserve battery

I have formed a thread in XDA for someone to develop a toggle switch for switching between "Hybrid" and "1X only" modes that are available in the Mode of Operations menu. If anyone has any ideas about how to do this perhaps using MortScript, I would appreciate the toggle switch.
