Can you buy the Beta? It is not listed on the PocketGear site. My udnerstanding is the regular version ?1.71 or so, does not work with the 6800. 1.80b works fine for me too.

I am really anxious to use tethering....but since my bill is expensed by my work, I cannot risk a surprise bill. Has there been enough time for someone that has been doing this to have two final monthly bills to confirm no charges?

I know what you mean. I've been following this thread just waiting for someone to tell me that there are no charges. I really don't want to buy another program or mess with a bunch of hacks.

I used USBModem and ICS with no hacks and it worked fine. Don't know if either will be charged.

What problem do people have with being honest and just paying for it?

I agree that its a rip-off to pay for unlimited data then pay again for tethering, but to be honest....anything else is dishonest and stealing...flat out.

Don't mean to get preachy and I'm not gonna sit here and argue the point with everyone....I just had to say something. I feel the same about downloading MP3, movies, etc....so I'm much more conservative than the average joe and don't expect you all to agree.

Because a lot of honest people just may choose to not use it if it costs. For many it's a convenience, but not enough to pay by the MB for. And if they do need to use it and will be charged it's good Idea to know so they can properly manage the usage.

It's no different than not knowing if Text Messages are included in a Plan before you use that feature.

Oh should mention I used USBModem and ICS (not long) and later ported that # to AT&T which forced the account closed with an ending balance and I don't see any sign of data charges. YMMV.

That is exactly the case for me. When I travel I make a special point to make sure I always stay at hotels with WiFi. But there are times their network maybe down, get an urgent call in the field that needs immediate attention that cannot wait until I find a WiFi hotspot, etc... My phone then becomes a rare last ditch option.

I always need to know what options are available to me and at what cost in order to gauge the action I need to take. I.E. Sprint may not care at all if I use tethering for 30 minutes once every few months. If it is an issue with Sprint, then if I need it on a trip, is $39.99 for PAM for that month cheaper than $9.99 a day for hotel high speed access for that week or a month of WiFi HotSpots.

Same here. I'm not being dishonest...I just need it as a last ditch effort. I also travel and need the ability to check my emails. Most of the time that's inside a hotel or straight from my phone, but there are times when nothing's available. If Sprint will let me attach my phone as a modem and not charge me that's great, but I'm not going to pay them $40.00 for something I'll rarely use.

Exactly my situation. This is a back-up. You are not going to run your net connection from your phone routinely... too awkward. Also, the speed varies a lot compared to DSL in my hands.

Well- I had to install activesync on my laptop- got ICS working. Then went ahead and uninstalled activesync and ICS still works!

OK...never could get a definitive answer about tethering without being charged, so I'm typing this connected to my Mogul. I didn't want to install a bunch of unecessary software so I decided to try Internet Sharing and see what happens. Pretty simple...I just connected to EVDO, started Internet Sharing and connected via Sprint PCS. If I don't find out sooner I'll definitely know when the bill comes. OK...gotta go. If they're charging this probably cost me 25 bucks!

Just got my 2nd bill. Using USBmodem with my Mac (BT & USB) and my PC (USB).

I used it moderately - email, general surfing, absolutely no downloading, etc.

The bill (both months) stays the same. What a great program!

Well I was personally planning on replacing my DSL as home for a while using tethering to see how it worked out... I dunno, I dont feel bad about it at all if I dont get charged more. I can always call retentions and bitch if I get charged for something.

I just need to decide if I want PDA Net or USB Modem.

Both programs do the same thing - just using the 6800 as a Proxy and passing the TCP traffic over to your computer.

I thought that the USBmodem was a very easy setup and costs quite a bit less. Plus it is already fully compatible with the phone.

For me - the biggest reason on going with this program was that on the Mac side, it supports BT and USB tethering. With PDAnet, it only supports BT.

I'd personally be wary about replacing any Broadband service. Not only does it have a high latency, but the potential of Sprint cancelling PowerVision on the phone because of high bandwidth is a minus for me.

Even if you paid the full rate PAM plan, Sprint does monitor your usage and will send notices if you exceed a certain bandwidth.

Well I would think that Sprint would offer some kind of warning before canceling the power vision I have on my account....if they wanted to do that, they just might as well terminate the whole damn account.

In the long run, I dont plan on it being a replacement...mainly because I want access to my PC from my phone for Orb, accessing files, etc. I'm only looking at it for short term for while I am back at school for the next 4 months....if I dont do any heavy downloading on torrents, I can save myself $42 a month (I dont even pay that much for my 1250 minute SERO plan!)
