The title says it all. I spent over 4 hours trying to get PDANet and the built in Sprint Internet Connection app to work - to no avail. Five minutes with USBModem and I am not only online and tethering, but at BLAZING speeds. USBModem simply BLOWS PDANet out of the water. Anyone who is considering which one to go with should know PDANet is a world of trouble on this phone and USBModem works fine. Anyhow, just thought I would share as to spare some of you from many countless hours trying to figure out the on board utility or PDANet.
AND YES, USBMODEM bypasses the system where Sprint can see how much data you are downloading through tethering - so no big bill
Sorry for starting a new thread on this one!! I got excited!! Thanks moderators for moving my post into this existing thread!!

Here is a curveball.. has anyone been able to setup a tethered 6800 as a modem on COM4 (USB Port) and been able to dial remotely into a system using HyperTerminal? That would be really useful for me if it were possible
Your confusing things. Most phones don't support analog modems.
You would also want to connect with hyperterm. That would just you a terminal.
You can use dialup networking by connecting to a "digital modem" (e.g. phone number #777).

Awesome !!
So is USBModem same as WModem?
Is USBModem include on Mogul or did you get off 6700 or download?
Does it work for USB or Bluetooth or both?
P.S. I always found Wmodem the most reliable method on 6600/6700.
USBModem is downloadable software. It is made by Mobile Stream. Free 14 day/30 connection trial. It is $19.99 to register. And it is supposed to work with bluetooth and through the USB cable, yet I was only able to get the cable part working. It was late and I was frustrated so I didn't try but once, and maybe later I will get it to work. The truth is USB connection gives you true EVDO speeds while Bluetooth does not, so in the even that I have no Wifi spot to connect to and need a modem I usually use the cable anyways.....
I just needed something that worked, and USBModem does...

Hope I answered some of your questions....
Can you post a link where I can find the USBModem software?
I tried USBModem over USB on Vista. Works like a champ.
Installed fairly easy too.
Install trial from Treo 700w USB Modem
Plug in USB Cable, let Active Sync do it's thing.
Start USBModem
Choose USB connection and hit Enable
At this time Vista will install a Treo USB Modem driver.
Then goto into Network and Sharing Center on Vista
Setup a new connection (choose Connect through a dial-up connection to the internet)
You should see the Treo Modem there, choose that
You only need a phone number and nothing else (#777)
Then connect and you should be up.
You'll end up with a shortcut in "Manage Network Connections" that you can copy to your desktop for subsequent connections.
Phone does not show a connection is up to internet when connected.
USBModem shows no change in status when connected either oddly enough.
But it's up.
I want to confirm Sprint will really charge for PAN connection before I purchase it.
It is dual NAI and thus PAM aware, like all of Sprint's new devices. You do not need a PAM plan to tether. Without a plan, tethering will be billed by the kilobyte. I'm not sure what the rate is currently, but last time I looked, it was $0.0015/KB (about $1.50/MB). People should be careful with their tethering usage, or they will be in for big surprises when their next bill comes.
EDIT: If you are on a PAM plan, the overage is $0.001/KB, and the maximum monthly charge is $70. Not sure if there's a cap if you're not on a plan, but some sources say it is still capped at $70.
I don't think that's the way it works anymore. I have a PAM plan ($40 unlimited usage) on a Sanyo 7500 that I have turned on and off, depending on whether I'm traveling or not. (I use the 7500 instead of the 6700, even though I have to pay for PAM, because it works with my Kyocera router.) Anyway, when the plan is not activated (and regular Power Vision is) I can't tether at all - when it is activated the dialup #777 (or the router) works great. So I don't think Sprint allows "casual" tethering anymore on the phones that have a dual NAI system (unless it's a Samsung and the NAI can be disabled). - sheureka
What I had to do is. Go online with IE then use the internet sharing program and share either USB or Bluetooth. Both Worked Fine. I had no problems I tested it on PC and MAC X but on my MAC it will only work Via Bluetooth.
I finally got tethering to work on both USB and BT & Internet Sharing. The secret: make sure you run pocket internet explorer on the Mogul before you hit "connect" on the Internet Sharing app. I had the most difficult time before reading a post here about someone starting PIE before running Internet Sharing. I said - why not give it a try and by golly it actually works!
DSLReports speed tests confirm the obvious - USB tethering is faster than BT [588 k/bps] v. [422 k/bps]. I'm sooooo happy!
I was just going to post the same thing. Connect on EVDO first. If you let it do it later you'll get the wrong user name password.
Also I had everything working on Vista WMDC 6.0. After upgrading to 6.1 I had a heck of time getting working again. The final fix, that makes no sense, was, I deleted the Bluetooth Serial COM port from device manager. Then went into Bluetooth services on PC and added the incoming COM port again. Then it re-added the BT serial driver. After that it started working.
I can get everything to work. BT, USB, PAN, USBModem. Except when doing USB Internet Sharing it disconnected after a couple minutes. I'm roaming at the moment and maybe they detected it and disallowed.
I am using Vista and the windows mobile device center of course. But, mine works great on phone as modem! Be sure to select 'Sprint PCS' and click connect before plugging in. Once plugged in, wait about 10-15 seconds.
I have tried USBModem with success on the Mogul. I get 1mbps steady, and the speeds are amazing; when browsing I don't notice much of a difference from my home cable connection!
That success doesn't necessarily mean it is going undetected...can anyone verify that it's indeed undetected?
Just a note, I was going through the registry on my phone, and I saw this entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\WModem\Multi-NAI
I set it to 0 (off) from 1 (default).
There's another curious entry: Check Profile in WModem. I'm aware that this phone uses multi-NAI and dual profiles (1 for the data on the phone, 1 for data on PAM). If I disable this Check Profile, would it help any with undetected tethering?
