Oh, and the $15 i pay to VZW to tether is worth more to me than burning $40 bucks on a tank of rip-off gas.
Youre actually paying Verizon to tether? You hardly need to do anything to get tethering working on the XV6800. A couple simple reg hacks and using DUN instead of VZConnect on your computer and it works fine. I refuse to pay them twice for data I paid for.

Cliff's Notes

I hate to do this, as I've been on the board a LOOOONG time (check my reg date!), but I just gotta ask...

I've had my verizon 6700 for years, and bluetooth tethering is a breeze.

I just ordered a sprint ppc6800 with a SERO program, gonna update to the new ROM (if it is not preinstalled).

I mostly use wifi w/ my laptop, but would like to use the phone as BT tether as backup (I use it this way maybe once or twice a month, at most).

I've read this entire thread (ICS, PDAnet, etc) and am still lost.

Can anyone give me the "cliff's notes" answer to this question? What is the easiest way to do a BT tether between my PPC6800 and laptop without paying for PAM (or being charged for massive data charges)?

Thanks in advance...

Sorry, this is not an answer to BT tethering but have you tried using wmwifirouter? I have been using this for a while and it's excellent. None of the range/speed/finicky problems of BT. Once set up correctly on the Notebook, there's practically nothing to do in most cases, just run the program on the 6800, and the PC connects right up.

<rant>I like the Cliff's Notes version of answers, too! I hate it when things are recondite and abstruse...and when you ask questions, people curtly reply RTFM.</rant>

Cliff's Notes version: Install a registry editor of your choice. Pocket Hack Master's (PHM's) RegEdit is what I and many others use. Use the registry editor to remove (delete) the registry key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing] "Extension"="rilphone.dll"

Next, pair your phone to your computer via BT.

Now, use your 6800 to start up the program "Internet Connection Sharing". Choose BT as your connection option in the first drop-down box and "Phone as modem" in the second. Click connect.

You should now be able to share your EVDO connection via BT with your computer.

I have the new ROM and there is no "Phone as Modem" option under manage my connections. I tried to add one, yet I get a message that states "A connection with that name already exists". Is there any way to un-hide the connection as for now I cant seem to teather? I've tried both ICS and Wireless Modem with no avail. I have no problem purchasing software (wifimodem or pdanet), but I read problems with both
Thanks

Does it cost anything to do this? Would the internet speeds on your computer be faster or slower if I did this through BT or through tethering either PDANet or Verizon?

VZ Access - tryin' 2b legal

Company's paying the $15 per month so I'd rather stay legal...

Problem: After installing HTC driver and VZ Access on laptop, it wont recognize 6800 as a modem. VZ Access will not uninstall in order to start from scratch. VZ support has tried to fix and their latest solution is to REFORMAT the laptop drive in order to reinstall VZ Access. That's not gonna happen.

Error when trying to uninstall VZAccess is "Can't open INSTALL.LOG file". The file is in the VZAccess folder.

Anybody seen this?

Tethering on VZ XV6800

This thread has not seen much action for a while. I have been tethering with my XV6800 without any problem, using a USB cord (my laptop runs WinXP SP2 and does not have Blue Tooth). I used it through a recent trial where there was no WiFi and in hotels that did not offer free WiFi. To do this you need to start VZ's Access Manager on the laptop and Modem Link on the phone. It is important to open the phone's Comm Manager and turn off the phone's data link. Then click Connect in Access Manager. Works fine and the phone recharges the battery while tethered (assuming the laptop is not running on its battery). Costs $15/month, a lot cheaper than getting a card. And since most hotels that don't provide WiFi free charge $10-11/day, it pays for itself very quickly. When I contacted VZ to set this up they told me that I can call them later to turn it off and the monthly charge will be prorated for the days I had the function available. I did not ask but my guess is that this may simply be a billing thing, i.e., you get unlimited data tethering for the monthly fee; otherwise perhaps you get charged by the kb. In terms of navigating the internet this way I did not notice any obvious difference compared to WiFi or even my cable modem. While tethered you can still place and receive calls but you cannot sync wirelessly. As a practical matter, that means the phone will not sync with Outlook (for e-mail, calendar, etc) while tethered. This is not a problem since I can access that stuff and my office network on the internet. Once I disconnect the tether the phone syncs everything. The only annoyance is that while tethered the phone frequently reminds me that it is not syncing any data.

Note: My phone syncs wirelessly with my office desktop (using Intellisync), not my laptop. My firm does not use Exchange. If you sync with the laptop using ActiveSync things may work differently. The $15/month rate may be related to our corporate plan.

Something that I have noticed from tethering my Mogul is

(a) I usually have to install Activesync 4.5 on the computer (winxp) - this updates the USB drivers so that the computer can actually see the phone at all. Note that I don't have to setup a relationship to sync the phone and the computer....

(b) it is very picky about which usb cable I use - basically I HAVE to use the cable that came with my phone. Using "any old usb cable" will let it connect, but then drop the connection after just a few seconds.

That seems odd. I can't remember if mine actually came with a USB cord. Anyway, I use my camera's USB cord with my phone, probably because I often travel with the camer. It works perfectly. But I don't use ActiveSync. I use Intellisync, the software VZ downloaded for wireless synchronization. I don't think I have ever connected the phone by wire to the computer with which it syncs (my office desktop). I connect it to my laptop only for tethering.

I am using Sprint 6800 and USB Modem. It works well, but I have learned
that I must follow an exact sequence to get it to connect.

0. Start the network connection on the PC. (set up per USB Modem
instructions)

1. Phone unplugged, soft reset
2. Shut off Active Sync on phone
3. Start Explorer on the PPC.
4. Start USB Modem and enable it.
5. Plug phone USB into the computer
6. Dial the connection on the PC.

It took me awhile to figure this out. It always works, but is cumbersome.
The soft reset can't be skipped. The slightest deviation and there's no
connection. It must be that some pieces of the overall application don't
reset cleanly unless one does this.

Does anyone know if PDA net is less fussy?

BTW, I have the $15/mo data plan and never pay extra charges. I get
900K Downloads typically on Rev A.

Tethering

Bill, that procedure DOES sound pretty cumbersome. For all I know, maybe my phone ends up doing much the same thing but with Verizon's Access Manager software doing all the work. I would think Sprint had a better procedure. Maybe their tech support can help. No, not the dorky Sprint tech support meant for the masses but their data people. When I was a Sprint customer (I had a Palm-based Samsung i500 with Sprint's Business Connection Personal Edition which pushed my e-mail and appointments out to the device from my office desktop PC until January of this year when I switched to Verizon in connection with joining a firm with their own Verizon plan) I found that they were usually quite helpful and knowledgeable. Of course, they were not dealing with, ahem, any Microsoft software. They had their own direct dial number--none of this trying to talk to a robot or even worse their main tech suppport people who were essentially worthless. The number was 866-818-1944 but I can't vouch that it still works--or that the data tech support group has not been disbanded.

PDANet Question

This was previously posted as a separate post before I noticed this thread. I apologize for reposting, but felt that it was more appropriate to put it here.

====================================

I just downloaded PDANet 1.80 and installed it with no problems. I was instantly able to connect to the Internet through my XV6800 on Verizon.

I do have one question, though. When I am not tethering and connect to the Internet from my device I get a message that the phone is dialing #777 and establishing a data connection. I then see the icon at the top of the screen showing that it is transmitting and receiving data.

However, when I use PDANet, I do not see the message telling me it is dialing #777 and the icon does not change to reflect an active data connection. Nevertheless, I am connected and surfing.

Can any of you tell me if this is consistant with what you see on your phone?

Thanks!

Kevin

When using PdaNet, you are connecting through ActiveSync. The Icon that shows an ActiveSync connection is all you'll see but it is using your data connection to browse on your PC.

WinterXtreme, were you able to figure this out? I am having EXACTLY the same problem with my PPC6800 connected to a Vista PC, while when I connect the same phone to machine with XP it stays connected for hours!

Mine does the exact same thing and gives me the exact same error, but I get it with Windows XP. I do not have the registry entry [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing] "Extension"="rilphone.dll".

Talking Tethering

I recently received my 2nd 6800 from Verizon.
The first one I had, I was able to tether through the USB cord with no problem.
When I tried to set it up on this new one, when I surfed, it took me to a Verizon page that wanted me to login and it would bill me.
In the past I never used USBModem or PDaNet. By using these programs, will it bypass that screen?
And I know that over these 11 pages of information it is here, but could you give step by step directions for the beginner on how to tether with these programs? (including the link for a good registry editor)

Sorry to be such a beginner. Thanks!
