6800 Tips and Tricks - READ 1st POST BEFORE POSTING TO THIS THREAD!!

Couple of things to keep in mind BEFORE posting to this thread:

1. This thread is for solutions/tips/tricks ONLY!! It is NOT for asking random questions or troubleshooting technical problems with your 6800. If you are contributing a tip/trick, please try to include a link to the thread (where applicable) that is discussing that particular topic.

2. If you have a question regarding a hack/tip/trick posted in this thread, do not post it here. All the hacks/tips/tricks posted in this thread should have their own dedicated threads in the forum so you should locate that thread and post to it. If you search and cannot find it, start a new thread.

3. If you have an unrelated, specific issue you need resolved, you should search the forum for a relevant thread and post in that thread. If you cannot find one, then start a new thread. If you post a problem to this thread asking for troubleshooting assistance, I will delete it without notice. This thread is ONLY for posting 6800 tips and tricks that you feel other people will find useful, nothing more.

4. AGAIN, this thread is NOT for asking questions of ANY type! It is simply for people to post tips and tricks about the 6800. If you post a question or respond to someone who posted a question, YOUR POST WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT NOTICE! These strict rules are necessary in order to keep this thread readable for others.

5. If someone posts a tip/trick that is not correct, feel free to post a correction. I will subsequently edit the post in question to reflect the correction (I will try my best to give you credit) and then remove your post so that all information on that particular tip/trick is kept together in a single post.

To make the camera save pictures in the proper orientation, find the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Camera\Image

Change the value named "EnableEncodePortrait" to 0.

TSK files (themes) can be read in the Today settings from the storage card as long as they are not placed within a folder below "\Storage Card" (wink to Pibe38 for that one)!

Exclamation Keyboard Backlight Tip

As most of us know by now, the keyboard backlight is controlled by an ambient light sensor just above the "I" key. Unfortunately, this sensor seems too sensitive and won't allow the keyboard backlight to come on unless in a very dark environment. To ensure the backlight comes on if you want it to, simply don't allow the kayboard to slide open all the way. Stopping it just short with your hand as it springs open will cover the sensor long enough to ensure the backlight comes on. I discovered this by accident as I don't like to alow my Mogul to slam open or shut unrestrained.

FIX THE SLOW RINGER

To do this, you will need your MSL, which only Sprint (or your provider) can provide you. Open up the phone app and dial ##778# (PST). You will be asked to enter your MSL. Enter it, and you will be brought into the provisioning of your phone. From the top left, select Modem Settings. On this page, your Slot Cycle Index (SCI) is how often your phone polls the tower for incoming calls, etc. This value is 1.28 seconds multiplied by 2^value (i.e 0=1.28 secs, 1=2.56secs) with 0 fastest, 7 slowest. The default is 2, but lowering it to 1 hasn't noticeably affected my battery life, and roughly 2.5 second (SCI 1) response time is far more reasonable than roughly 5 seconds (SCI 2)

Change ringtone/vibrate/LED flash characteristics

If you would like more control over how your device rings/vibrates/flashes its LEDs on events, you can can change the Script values of these events. For example, for an incoming call performing 'activate device, play ringtone, wait 3 seconds, repeat':

HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\Script = "apw3r" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)

For performing 'active device, set volume to 33%, play ringtone, set volume to 67%, play ringtone, set volume to 100%, play ringtone (no repeat)':

HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\Script = "ac33pc67pc100p" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)

The following are the full codes available to you. Please note that all the codes are executed simultaneously except after a ringtone play / wait code. E.g. 'v1p' will vibrate and play at the same time, while vibrating for 1 second. But 'pv1' will play the ringtone through all the way first, then start vibrating for 1 second.

a = activate device
cN = set volume to N in percentage max volume
fN = flash notification LED for N seconds
p = play ringtone. Note that this will play the ringtone all the way through before continuing with the next code.
r = repeat. Note that this should be the last code in your Script string, if used at all.
vN = vibrate for N seconds
wN = wait for N seconds. Note that the device will wait this long before continuing with the next code.

NOTE: I tried this on my 6800 and changed the v0 to v1 and now it doesn't have just one long vibrate. v0 sets it to vibrate always.

To stop notification LED's from blinking all the time (bluetooth, phone, messaging, etc):

HKLM>Drivers>BuiltIn>AllLEDMgr>Index Change value from "1" to "0"

This worked for me, anyway.

I believe this does disable them, so if you rely on them for anything, this may not be for you.

Be careful with this hack, as it also disables the vibrate function of the phone.

Disconnect from Data (EVDO)

From today screen, hold "End Call" key for approximately 3 seconds. Do not hold for longer or your phone will go into flight mode. If this happens, open comm manager and select phone.

Also, if you go into the comm manager, you can just click the 'Data Connection' button and it will disconnect from EV-DO.

NOTE: On the other hand, you cannot open the EV-DO connection using the comm manager. The 'Data Connection' will only disconnect from EV-DO.

Change Network Name

This is to change your network name from "Sprint PCS" to anything you want.

HKLM> System> State> Phone> "operator name" change to whatever you wish.

NOTE: After a soft reset it reverts back to the original "Sprint PCS" string.

Opera Browser - Getting the HTML links to work in email

Change the value at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\: DEFBROWSER key 1 to
"storage card\program files\opera\OperaLaunch.exe"

Make sure you include the quotes. It worked without even a soft boot. I used Resco regedit to make the change. If you have it installed in main memory then the example below should be the solution.

Those using opera 8.6 - xda-developers
You only need to make one change:

In HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\: DEFBROWSER is a key called "1". Change the string value from "OperaLaunch.exe" to "\Program Files\Opera\OperaLaunch.exe" (or whereever Opera is actually installed). You need to include the quotes around the string. Save and restart your device.

Add Icons to the built in HTCHomeplug without installing software

Goto Registry folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/HTC/HTCHomeplug

There are currently keys named "2" and "3".

To add say, PIE, add another key named "4", with string values:

LaunchApPath : \windows\iexplore.exe
ResPath: \windows\iexplore.exe

To add say, Calculator, add another key named "5", with string values:

LaunchApPath : \windows\MobileCalculator.exe
ResPath: \windows\MobileCalculator.exe

Just keep incrementing the numbers to add more icons. No quotes needed if directory names have spaces.

For the update to take place, simply go to Start Menu > Settings > Personal Tab > Today > Items tab. Uncheck HTCHomeplug, recheck HTCHomeplug, hit OK back to today screen.

Alarms that wake up the phone
*edit* This seems to work fine for some, not at all for others */edit*
The trick is to set your backlight timeout to longer than device timeout. I.E.:

Settings > Backlight > External Power: 5 min
Settings > Power > Advanced > On external power: 1 min

Now when plugged in, the device will turn off before the screen dims. When your alarm goes off in the morning, it wakes the phone up. Not sure why this works, or why there is a wake-up bug in the first place, but it worked like a charm for me. You can also use this trick on battery power.

Picsel Browser "Memory Full" error
Picsel seems to have a limited amount of storage space for use in history. Once you have used it a while, you will get this error right before a page loads. To remove it, goto:

\Program Files\Picsel\Browser\History

and remove all files there. Clearing history from inside of Picsel does not seem to work all the time, however this seems to.

Change softkeys on "Today" screen

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\keys\112 for left
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\keys\113 for right
You may not have a 113, but you can just make the 113 identical to 112 and change the "open" command. The value for "Default" controls what is displayed on the screen

and to change 112 to the pPhone app its actually cprog.exe

Quick volume adjust

If you take your stylus and click on the speaker icon at the top of the Today screen, the volume bubble appears. You can set the ringer as well as the earpiece volumes to whatever you like.
