Here are a couple more pictures from Engadet for the VZ version.....I Want to see a Sprint Pic!!!...but a good sign none the less:
Verizon XV6800 in the flesh
Quote:
Hold on, Apache owners, your knight in shining armor is just around the corner! At least we think it is, now that we've seen some shots of a Verizon-branded XV6800 doing its thing in the wild. It may not look much different than the XV6700 it replaces, but we figure that if the EV-DO Rev. A doesn't tempt you -- or the promise of a Rev. A upgrade at some point, at least -- the 2 megapixel camera and 256MB of Flash just might.
Ummmm... if you actually check out the site, you will find things such as "Mr everyday user" review of the extra xv6800 battery he ordered, and how it fit and worked perfectly. Ummmm, the PPC is not out yet. Buyer beware. I would be very aware of anything I looked at at this site, scam galore...
Sprint rep said that they would be discounting current PDA phones starting Sunday the 18th. That usually means that new phones are around the corner. He said he had heard that the 5800 and 6800 were close to release. Might be smoke up the butt from rep that knows nothing, but I am hoping for a 5800 release very soon.
I stopped into a Verizon store and spoke with the manager. She is the first Verizon rep I spoken with who even acknowledged the existence of the 6800. She said: It is delayed because there were some things they wanted changed. Verizon takes its phones very seriously and test them with real people like me.
She told me it looks like "early Q2."
As I said, she acknowledged the phone and indicated that she herself was testing it. April doesn't sound too bad.
Does anyone knows of a PPC phone with Windows Mobile 6 on the horizon for Verizon? I'm looking for a full-featured PDA phone but with Windows Mobile 6.
The Samsung does not seem as high-end as the XV6800. It is a smaller device. I think I've seen a Toshiba on the horizon that would be an asweosome phone. Among other things it has a 800X480 resolution along with Windows Mobile 6. I'm looking for a PPC device equal to or better than the XV6800 but with Windows Mobile 6.
I've been waiting almost 5 months now. 3.5 of those were because my new every two wasn't up, but now I'm ready to buy and there is nothing new out there. Everything that is a good option is about a year old. It's time for some of these phones to be real. Rumors don't make calls.
It would be nice if the 6800 has integrated Sprint picture mail but I'm not counting on it. I should have kept my PPC-6600. There has been any Sprint PPC phone, since the PPC-6600, with picture mail. That's why I sold my 6700 and bought a Treo 700P! It let's me manage all my pictures, stored on the Sprint network, right from the phone!

I'm rockin Verizon Fios baby! 20Mbs is dumb fast! http://www.speedtest.net/result/295783856.png
I am currently in the market for a smartphone and have pretty much settled on the xv6700. Now in looking at these threads with the xv6800 coming I am put in a delima. Does anyone know enough about the 6800 yet to know if it is worth waiting for. From what I can see there really isn't all that much of a differance (inc ram with dec Processor speed). With the addition of the external mini-sd card is the inc ram really an issue if the Processor is slower. Any assistance?
I was setting up for a conference on 2/21 and was supposed to have access to the room at 7PM. When I arrived the room was still occupied by another group, Sprint/Nextel.
I had an opportunity to talk to a representative about the 6800, this is what he would confirm:
EVDO Rev. 0 chipset (no upgrade to Rev A due to hardware, also stated that Sprint plans first Rev A handsets in 2008.)
WM5 (originally WM6 however a number of issues have prevented this, no upgrade planned)
No push-to-talk / "ready link" feature
Release by June (initial release was planned for March, WM6 issues and other problems have delayed this)
That's all I can remember of the top of my head. The rep. seemed very knowledgable. He also stated that he knows several techs who are running EVDO on their 6600's. I guess it helps when you can bypass the ESN authentication.
If all true, that was not a very uplifting post....everything from shooting down the coolest two possibilities with the 6800 (Rev A & Crossbow) to a stab in back with denying all of us EVDO on our EVDO capable 6600s (this last one really burned me) while they take advantage of the very thing they promised us and took away!
Personally I find this hard to follow from a Sprint point of view because if true, this would make the 6800 more or less a 6700 with an added thumb wheel. Not much incentive for users to upgrade, which this demographic I am sure is a huge portion of sales for any new phone released....especially a phone that is being released as the next generation in a series.
But time will tell. I am generally a glass half full kind of guy. There is still several months until his projected release, and that is not taking into account their usual second round of delays! Maybe there will be a breakthrough or two.

Time to give up the cheap data prices and look towards a gsm phone when my contract is up. An unlocked imate ultimate looks nice... I wonder what they cost. Can they be used on US networks?
I was under the impression that the 6800 will be the same as the Cingular 8525 only for CDMA network. I had heard that the performance would be a noticable increase. Maybe not, but I am trying to hold out for the new phones. I'm really getting impatient though.

I hear ya, I have thought of that myself as all the phones I want are GSM only. Butttt I am not ready to go backwards, you wiould soon tire of poor call quality along with slower and more expensive data. No matter how you look at it it is a compromise.
Hey all, I'm new here and have been reading all the posts with interest. I've had my i730 (Verizon) for over 2 years and am itching for a change. The 6800 was looking very intriguing but I just read something that made me sad. Follow this link to some info about the 6800. It was just posted on Feb 12, so it MAY be the latest word (PLEASE tell me it's NOT). The news about the Processor deflated my zeal.
I held out with the 6600, so pretty much no matter what I am going to give this phone a try. Now that Sprint has upped their trial period for 30 days, I can certainly put it to the test. Sprint does like to get one up on VZ so I am still hoping for 128 mb RAM and WM6.

I'm with you Hobbes - I've stuck with my 6600 for a while (two years this month) and I'm up for a discount this month.
The problem I'm now facing is that since this damn Verizon Firmware Fiasco my 6600 hard-resets about once a week... I'm completely fed-up and ready for something new.
However, all that I've read indicates that the 6800 will not be WM6 or upgradable... this is pretty disappointing. So i guess I'm with you in that I'm not wowed by the 6800, but I just don't see any other comperable options.
And what's worse is playing the waiting game with verizon for a release, while my phone tries to kill itself on a weekly basis...
