But if it released in Q1, many people will be able to take advantage of Rev A immediately:
Today: Sprint Announces EV-DO Rev A Plans To Roll Out by End of Year
Thursday, 03 August 2006
Quote:
Sprint this morning announced their plans to deploy EV-DO Rev A on their network. The retrofit to Sprint's EV-DO network will boost average download speeds to 450 - 800 kbps. More important, it will boost upload speeds to 300 - 400k. This is an increase of over twice the upload speeds of the current EV-DO/1xRTT network.
EV-DO Rev A will open doors to new technologies such as video calling, and other upload-dependent tasks, including Sprint's upcoming QChat unified PTT network. Sprint plans to begin upgrading their network in the fourth quarter of this year. By the end of the year, Sprint expects to have coverage to 40 million people.
By the end of 2006, Sprint expects combined EV-DO Revision 0 and A to reach 200 million people across 220 metropolitan areas. Sprint also boasts a goal of 908 airports will be covered by the end of 2006. Sprint also announced that EV-DO Rev A test calls have been completed on-network, a sign that Sprint is near ready to begin deployment.
They can release a Rev A capable phone now that will only access Rev 0 that can be software upgraded later to access the Rev A network, but it has to have a Rev A chipset in it.

some update. why not throw gps in there, that would make me upgrade. no way I am upgrading to this new model, which is really a refresh in my mind. Zero new features. EVDO isnt even deployed nationwide not to talk of Rev A which will be in like less than ten cities when this phone comes out. WHat a joke.
And as I understand it that is exactly how the 6800 will be released. It will be revA capable, but will need and update to actually use revA. Kinda like the way the 6600 only needed an update to enable EVDO...
Rev A won't do a ton of good unless the Processor is increased. While the 6700 handles the current EVDO well, I think software/hardware limitations will prevent much of an increase. I'll probably keep my 6700 for a good while after the new one is released, whenever that may be. I've got too many toys for it, and it works very very VERY well for my uses.

Rev. A is all about getting that great downstream speeds of 500-700kbps.. Can't wait to use it to stream with pocket caster!!!! Imagine the possibilities!!
With the Processors on these phones the extra bandwidth means jack ****. Most of the time spent waiting is for the bloody phone to process the webpage on that small screen.
The EDVO and phone access is sort of cool if you are slingboxing and get a call but otherwise Rev A is sort of *Yawn* for me.
Depending on the resolution and the Processor I might take a look at it but I'm tired of the keyboard on the 6700 (current WX owner).
With holding out with the 6600, it sure will be for me!

Actually I get a lot of emails with large attachments and remote control my desktop at work to get the latest stats quite frequently. So, any little bit I doubt will hurt much.
Plus my wife thinks that slingbox is pretty cool....so maybe I will get them both together!

i agree... my 6700 max bandwidth is around 400kbps, while my sprint evdo laptop card gets close to 2mbit/s.. both using the same tower..
BTW, go ahead break the bad news. Whats it got? miniSD? microSD? nanoSD? picoSD? miliSD? tinySD?
What about "SmurfySD", "PlanktonSD", or "PinHeadSD" (the latter referring to size of the media, not a comparison to the memory amount/brain functions of George Clooney)
The memory card issue is really bothering me though. My 1gig mini is full and I wanna get a 2g, but whats the point of buying a mini now if the 6800 is gonna use micro? Its so stupid. I can barely get the mini into the slot. I have to push it with the tip of my nail. And now they want to go smaller? A 2g micro is twice the price of a 2g mini!

Over EDVO now slingbox is already really flawless. Don't wait its worth the purchase now.
The upgrade for Rev-A will be worth not because of the download speed but the upload. I will be a walking/Driving DJ. Stream what I am listening to to a shoutcast server, live video broadcast, video confrencing etc...
One thing I do wish for is a ICS trough built in wi-fi, so I wont have to use my PC as a middle man. (I would gladly pay $1,000 for such a software)
The PPC-6800 looks sweet, with no bulky antena, but does anyone know if the screen is going to be VGA? and the Article says with improved camera, though I will be satisfied with 2mp camera I wish they put 3mp one.

That's unpossible! Well, theoretically possible but quite unlikely in the real world. I think the speed test you were using was not correct. EV-DO in its current iteration should max out at around 700-800kbps down. I was doing tests with an EV-DO card back when no one else was on the towers and the most I ever saw was 800. Speeds will vary as the air is an ever-changing medium, but you should average 300-400kbps or so and peak at 700-800kbps.
@Kushed
And what good are more megapixels on the camera when the phone's got crappy CMOS imaging sensor? Magnifying a crap image (even optically) is just going to make for a large crap image--it will not improve quality.
Looks like back to the future. I will be Sooo happy to have skipped the 6700. I am here waiting with a 4GB SD hoping the 6800 will take it. With 4GB you really have tons of room for podcasts mp4s etc. and it makes for a very converged machine.
