I can't speak to if there is a built in GPS... seems fishy to me considering the kaiser/tilt has a GPS bump on the back to indicate it's satellite antenna.

But at any rate. I am using the same Holux GPSlim 240 bluetooth GPS that I was using on my 6700 and it works great. It's small, gets a signal even when obstructed and never loses it's link with the phone... only downside is the battery life... gotta remember to flip the switch on it when you're not using it, and charge it after about 8-9 hours of use.

SMikulski49, no there is no (longer) a built in GPS radio. The CDMA companies didn't want independant GPS capability.

9hrs, ouch. They need to stop using BT and get with the wibree program. Its supposed to be backwards compatable.

Thaks for the info, you know any good sites where I can get this for a good price? So far I have seen 70 to be the lowest. Also can you check this site:

Many Bluetooth GPS receivers - Starting at $27 + Shipping - SlickDeals.net Forums

and give me an opinion if any of them are good. Thanx

I always use slickdeals to find the best price whenever possible so I'd say that's pretty good. I bought mine about 2 years ago for $100 from buygpsnow.com

There have been several photos ( from FCC files) on the 6800 thread on
Howards Forum showing the the 6800 with an internal GPS antenna.
Might want to check out the FCC site.
Also if you take the back off your phone (battery cover ) and look at the
top right side of the phone you will see a little rubber plug that covers the
antenna plug in. You can remove the plug and see the plug in.
All we need is the rom update and the phone will have its own GPS.
Sprint said they will release the update 1Q 2008 & VZW will also.
HTC is doing the rom now.
I can't believe you guys haven't even looked at the phone before you
say it doesn't have something.

That rubber piece covers the external antenna hole. Most cell phones have that connector. Even my Audiovox 9155 has this. That is not for GPS. However if the FCC specs say it is in it then it must be. Everything we have been able to get from anyone has stated otherwise, however.
Please see for example.

If it doesn't have the internal GPS antenna why would Sprint release a
statement that they will release the rom to activate it in Q1 2008???

I'm not sure if it does or doesn't have an internal antenna. All the information we have been given so far from companies and the general concensus is that it does not have an internal GPS antenna.
I know that the providers have a GPS offering through them. I'm not sure if that is active yet or not. I didn't get it. I haven't seen anything on the new rom so I'm not sure what it includes.

HTC: Support: Mogul™ by HTC (Sprint) Software Download

If this is what you are talking about I think this deals with the provider paid GPS system. They are probably activating it the same time they are activating EV-DO Rev. A.

What this does is uses wireless towers for triangulation to tell the device where it is. True GPS uses satelites to tell the device where it is.
Guru's correct me if I'm wrong on any of this with the paid GPS system.

I just ordered my Holux GPSlim 240 receiver, hopefully it works with my tomtom 6. I picked the 2day shipping so hopefully it will be here by friday/saturday. I love that it is so small and I can take it with me anywhere. Thanks for your advice!!

aGPS as deployed by the CDMA providers is just as much a "real" GPS system as any other; it also has the additional capability to use cell-tower triangulation in areas where GPS signal is inaccessible or inaccurate, or to refine a gross satellite fix.

Most cellphones don't have the computing power onboard to get a first-fix in a reasonable amount of time, so they do offload some of the computations to the network in most cases. This also allows them to "jumpstart" the first fix by providing a GPS ephemeris to the mobile via the mobile data network rather than the 50 bps downlink from the GPS satellite.

Now, it happens that some carriers have restricted access to the GPS APIs on some of their phones - compare, say, the Sprint 8130 and the VZW 8130 in GPS capabilities with respect to Google Maps. But it's the same underlying hardware, and the CDMA implementation of aGPS is just that - Assisted GPS...

Yes, there is a GPS antenna built into the Titan (Mogul/XV6800) according to the FCC photos. Sprint has publicly announced that this receiver will be activated along with Rev A sometime in 1Q08. Sprint quote: "Additionally, HTC is currently developing a separate ROM update which enables the EV-DO Rev. A and GPS capabilities that are already built into the Mogul hardware. Sprint and HTC plan to make this software ROM available in early 1Q 2008. We would also like to extend our thanks to those customers that have taken the time to identify and report these issues to us."

You would think that this would force Verizon to follow suit, especially since HTC is the one working on the ROM for the Mogul, not Sprint. If you want to talk a little history, Sprint release the AKU3 ROM for the PPC-6700 a month before Verizon released it for the XV6700. I would estimate that the XV6800 will get the GPS/Rev A ROM update somewhere between February and April 2008.

Now thats not nice, you shouldn't be encouraging the rest of us to go and void our warranties. There are those of us that have a hard enough time not doing it on our own.

Thanks for the pic and description! Now is that radio GPS or an aGPS radio, and is there a difference? I've been told there was.

Oh, I didn't take my phone apart, that's the FCC pic.

As for aGPS vs GPS, put it this way, the XV6700 didn't have a separate GPS antenna. The XV6800 obviously does. In fact, I don't know of any phone that has a separate GPS antenna other than those that have true on-board GPS capabilities.

I don't think Sprint would have issued that press release about GPS in the Mogul, if it was only aGPS. All phones have aGPS nowadays, don't they?

Thanks for the update. I'm not sure what is required on a phone for aGPS but I've had reps tell me not all their phones were compatable.
