I was hopeing to get some help with my HTC 6800. I bought the phone brand new when it 1st came out and loved it, however over time the phone seems to be going crazy. I find my self having to soft reset all the time, sometimes as much as 10 or 12 times a day, and then some times i won't have to soft reset for days. it is responding a lot slower when opening up applications than it ever use to. Some days it will work perfect then out of know where it will work like crap for a few days then work great again. most of the time when it starts to act crazy i will end up having to soft reset over and over until out of know where it starts to work great again.
The primary problems I seem to have which causes me to soft reset all the time is when trying to send a text/email/picture mail..ect on the slide out keyboard (very frustrating) it will triple type some stuff, double type, type a completely diffrent letter or number than what i pushed, then sometimes it will freeze-up half way through typing something, but the phone its self dosen't freeze-up just the typing. I can close out the text or email and use the phone fine but for some reason the typing just seems to freeze-up.This is the biggest reason i soft reset and seeing how i text/email a lot its driving me crazy!!
Has anyone else had these kinds of problems? And if so what did you do to correct them other than buying new phone>
ill say your issues are not normal thats for sure.
ok, lets start off with some things..
how much memory do you have when these issues are happening? do you check your running memory? if not, check it and see where it is
have you ever seen a low memory error pop up on the device?
do you have a lot of contacts on the device? memos? notes? task? to do's? contacts with multiple entries?
email accounts: do you REGULARLY clear out:
-deleted box
-sent box
-draft box
-outgoing box (may not be anything in here but just asking)
same for the SMS folder
do you have a lot of USER installed programs on the device?
do you have an unofficial ROM on the device?
have you cleared out your cache in your web browsers? also the cookies and temp files?
finally, have you ever done a COMPLETE hard reset and REBUILT from SCRATCH your phone? meaning not just doing a hard reset and then restoring.. if you did that you are just putting the problem(s) [if there are any] back onto the device.
these PPC devices need to be cleaned out over time and i recommend doing a hard reset and doing a manual install once a year atleast.. this way you get rid of old reg entries from programs you uninstalled, etc and the phone has the "fresh out of the box" smell snniiiffff aaaahhhhhhhh....
so smoke over the above and let me know. the pim.vol is the database of all your PIM info and if this is a big number then it will eat up a lot of memory.
all your email and SMS messages will kill your memory.
a program , pocket mechanic, will do a lot to help you manage your memory and can even relocate programs that live in main memory to storage card. i use it and its a great program.
so yeah also move any unused files from main memory to storage card.

Thanks for responding so quickly
I am working on completing a few of the suggestions that you listed.
I never thought about going and deleting old SMS,Email...ect... so when I go and look at that stuff i was really suprised to see that I had @ 4000 SMS message in my in-box, and about the same amount in my sent folder + my deleted folder. so i am in the process of clearing out all those which it seems is taken a while
I have never done a hard reset on my phone because i did not want to deal with re-setting up all my contact, picutres, and music (failry lazy here). I do back my phone up on my pc at least once every few months.
The only time i can think of that i have ever seen any kind of memory error is from time to time if i try to send picture mail, then i just soft reset and it works fine.
have very few user installed programs on the phone. can only think of two off the top of my head that i have which was yahoo2go and pocket express. use to love pocket express but rarely ever use it anymore, and only reason i had yahoo2go was because under my normal yahoo email i can not respond to people if they send me a email on yahoo. was told by sprint that was because i have the free version of yahoo. so some one told me about yahoo2go however again i rarely ever use that program either. if i need to respond to a email i just use outlook or hotmail.
it has been a while since i have cleared out the cache&cookies from IE but will do that once my phone is done clearing out all my old SMS and emails.
when i 1st got this phone a friend of mine at the time installed a supposed upgraded rom version on the phone saying it would make the phone faster. now granted the phone has worked perfectly for a long time now, and i only recently started to have trouble (maybe last 3 or 4 months).
I have the phone set up to where when i kill a program it kills it so that it does not keep running it in the back ground.
hope this extra info helps out thanks for the help so far.phone is still working on deleting all those SMS lol been going for a while now!
Well I deleted all SMS, and EMAIL messages + cleared the cookies and internet history. Sadly though I am still having the same problems with double, and triple typing letters, and sometimes having to hit the same key a few times to get it to accept it.
Anything else I can do that I am missing? Its really starting to become a pain to text which sucks seeing how I text way more than i talk on the phone.
rare case it could be the ribbon cable under the keyboard is flaking out causing the multiple letters...
other than a physical issue with the keyboard, its really difficult to ascertain what else could be going on.
yeah a hard reset can be a pain especially if you have customized the phone but you should do atleast one a year.. if you do decide to go that route, dont simply restore your backups because you will put the same issue(s) back on the phone..
now the PIM info, contacts, calendar, notes, etc.. those items can be safely restored from Async but i would manual reinstall your 3rd party programs..
again thats up to you and it may not solve the issue but if its a software related problem, that will clear it up....
I just had that multiple letters per keypress on my xv6800. I called Verizon and they send me a replacement. Not sure if the phone was in warranty (it was a replacement), but I have the insurance. Well worth it since this is my third phone.
Hi guys... Just tripped across this thread and thought I might make a suggestion. It sounds like Marc might be correct in the fault keyboard cable. And the only way to really test that is a hard reset. Might I suggest Dotfreds PIM backup ( Dotfred's Space ). I've grown to like it more than just copying the PIM.vol file or re-active syncing because it backs up also texts, call history, etc. Makes that part real easy. And don't forget to remove SD card-I keeping hearing horror stories of SD cards getting wiped during a hard reset
Good luck
Mark

So I guess I am down to doing a hard reset to try and fix my problem.
So what is the quickest and safest way to do a hard reset? I sync my phone up with my pc every few months to back up my contact, pictures, and music...ect..
So would I just hard reset then re-sync my phone to my pc to have my contacts, pictures and music placed back on my phone?
but before you even do any of that.. just use the phone WITHOUT installing ANYTHING.. just test it out for a day.. see if your keyboard issue(s) go away.. if so, you know it was some rogue software/reg settings, etc... if its still there, you know for sure its a hardware issue....
ok thanks will do it today when i get home from work and let you know in a day or so how it worked out.
thanks for all the help so far
edit: is there a secure way to verfy that all my contacts, pics, and music is safely syncd to my pc? before i do the hard rest, would hate to do the hard reset and then find that none of the stuff was property backed up.
open up Async and let it do a backup/sync of your contacts, calendar, to do's.. PIM info.. make sure you check what you want synced and let it Sync.. i dont backup music or photos but those can be backed up...

sorry for the questions just want to make sure i do this right. should i uncheck the box that sync's up the files? on my list of things to sync is contacts, email, favorites, files, media. just wondering if i sync the files will this possible sync up what ever problem i might have if its a file problem? i have done a full sync on all the stuff i listed above and everything seems to be fine except files which shows almost 300 unresolved issues.
if you want better piece of mind then check all of it. i dont know what you have on your phone so that is left up to you.. but nonetheless after you hard reset, dont install anything and just use the phone normal and see if the problem goes away.. if it does then do your Async restore and go from there..
Sorry for the late response been so busy lately, just wanted to let you know that the hard reset didn't seem to change anything. I am still getting slow response while texting, double, triple typing ect....this is such a dissapointment because i really like this phone. I know sprint said they would send me a new one but whats the point if its going to do the same thing down the road.
So if i wanted to replace this phone with a new phone does anyone have any suggestions? I just bought my wife the HTC Snap which is perfect for her but seems a little to basic for me any other ideas?
well this should not happen with a replacement... who told you it would happen with a replacement? i think your keyboard's ribbon cable is damaged...there have been others who have experienced this.. myself included.. the original one i had eventually started sticking keys so when i would press a key it would type several times... sometimes the keyboard would just not work! if you press the keyboard/bend it a certain way the board would work... its been seen by a lot of folks...
so get a replacement... it will not behave that way..

Ah cool i just figured if it happend to this one it would eventually happen to another one, but i do really like this phone so i might just go ahead and let sprint send me a new one out.
