Did Verizon push something down...

...to cripple the GPS again? I have had mine working great with GPSServer for some time now and all of a sudden today it won't work anymore. Google maps and Live Search no longer see a signal.

My situation exactly. Mine was working great with GPSGate and now it doesn't get a GPS fix.................. looks like they're doing something sneaky.

I just noticed it's up and running again. The icon is green and livesearch and googlemaps are working again. Maybe they're diddling with getting the gps unlocked for the omnia, touch pro, etc. . . . . .

This happens on occasion and is not the first time the GPS has gone down. All we can hope for is that it doesn't occur on a day we really need it.

Yes, mine is working as well now. Came back yesterday evening. I was driving home Tuesday night when suddenly I was in Idaho, then CA. While I was saving on airfare, this isn't what I wanted.

I am in S. NH.

Hi Jim,

I see you came from the I760 just like I did. . . . . . Love my VX6800 although the Omnia looks better (especially if Verizon unlocks the GPS as promised).

And I think it happened to me once or twice when I was on the road and needed directions.

But... I don't think its Verizon fiddling with anything, is it? Correct me if I am wrong, but GPS satellites in orbit send signals. Our phones either receive those signals, interpret them, and display the results to us - or they don't.

The phones crippled by Verizon either
A) receives the GPS signals, and ignores them, or,
B) it receives the GPS signals, interprets the results, and encrypts the results so only crappy, overpriced Verizon software can display them

So if Verizon "pushed" some software on their paying customers to kill the GPS hack - wouldn't it be permanent until we either reinstalled the hack, or we installed a new and improved workaround?

I'm not sure Verizon would "push" a hack and then a day later "unpush" it.

So, my thought is that the GPS interruptions are caused by some other odd anomaly such as the software on the phone acting wonky, weird weather or clouds or something unrelated to sleazy Verizon tactics. (Although I wouldn't put it past them.)

Of course, I'm just guessing. Thoughts?

I'm in Northern VA and just checked - GPS Gate is showing yellow (meaning it's getting gps data but not location) and IGuidance is showing no satellites.

It also makes me wonder if Verizon is deliberately trying to screw up information from the towers so we can't bypass having to use thier lousy VZN.

I have been talking with a few people on XDA and PPC Geeks and I hope that this is just some more down time. Since acquiring Alltell things have been really sh***y and this may be an intermittent problem. I am looking around to see if there is more information but nothing yet. See here for what we are talking about.

Yep - after reading the link Serfboreds posted above it makes me think Verizon is up to something.

Guess we'll have to wait and see but if it doesn't come back then I'm going blow IGuidance, GPSGate, Google Maps and Live Search off to free up some memory. I bought a seperate Garmin unit when IGuidance would only release the new software on smaller microsd cards (I'm running a 16gb).

it could be an error in the coding, something along the lines of what happened to all first generation zune's that made them all stop working on the same day. who knows, hopefully its fixed soon!

That is good to hear. Telus settings seem to fix aGPS too. Set these in QPST and registry.

For Valhalla:
Then just change these and Soft Reset:
HKLM\Software\Valhalla Legends\GPSServer\Mode=2 (the original value)
HKLM\Software\Valhalla Legends\GPSServer\PDEAddress=5C8BC6D8
HKLM\Software\Valhalla Legends\GPSServer\PDEPort=8889

Thank Humpa at PPC Geeks for the above.

-------------------------------

For Custom Roms

216.198.139.92
8889
IP
PDE

EnableAGPS = 1
GPS Mode = 4 (2 would probably work too)

GPS is Now Working with GoogleMaps

OK, it is now working, but I must admit I'm not exactly sure why or how.

I changed the registry settings for PDEAddress and PDEPort as posted by serfboreds using PHM RegEdit and soft reset, but the GPS still did not work. So, I set the settings back to their original values and soft reset again and now the GPS is working fine.

I'd like to see if someone else can replicate this and get the same result. If so, we may have the solution.

So, I would suggest the following steps:
  1. Record the current values of these two registry keys.
  2. Change the settings of these two keys per serfboreds post.
  3. Soft reset.
  4. Change key values back to original settings.
  5. Soft reset.
  6. Test result.
I look forward to hearing if someone else can get this to work.

I'm in Northern VA and just tried that without success.

I don't about anyone else but I'm really getting sick and d*mn tired of Verizon crippling features. It's like buying a car with a radio and then being told that you can only listen to it if you pay for access to the radio and then it plays only elevator music (VZ Navigator in this case).

My contract is up in October (after 8 years with Verizon) and I'm seriously contemplating the iPhone with OS 3.0 now.

Sorry for the rant but this stupid considering I needed IGuidance functional two days ago to find something (forgot the Garmin at home) and didn't have access to directions.

Edit: I just sent Verizon an e-mail telling them how irritating this is and that I wanted to speak to someone at an Executive level or at the very least 3 tier support to see if Verizon is doing this deliberately.

Same issue here.

Tried the fix above to no avail on my verizon vx6800. With my luck I noticed it was not workign the other day when I was lost in downtown Detroit. Makes me hate that city even more than I did before. I will keep looking online for solutions and get back if I find anything. Stupid verizon, get on the bandwagon and just enable GPS already.

EDIT: After a couple soft resets and getting outside of my office building it is working again. Actually getting more satellites than usual. Thanks for the reg fix above, worked great! Let's hope it lasts!
