Dropping data plan on verizon xv6800 wasn't easy

With Verizon's new policy that every pda phone has to have a data plan (as of Nov 2008 ), it wasn't easy dropping my data plan this morning (for budget reasons). They first said I couldn't, but after explaining to the rep that I believed that policy was only for new pda phones, she put me on hold, and when she returned she said she dropped the $29.99 data plan. I really started enjoying the data plan (email anywhere, GPS, weather, web browsing) but its definitely more of luxury for me that I can do without for now. I can still do some of those things with WIFI anyway.

I was just curious how many people don't have data plans. I get plenty of use out of my phone without it although I'd love to have it.

I currently have an xv6800 with the $29.99 monthly data plan.
I would love to get rid of the data plan.
I think i might call verizon and see if i can get as lucky as you were.

If you don't mind me asking, were there any distinct things you said that persuaded them to drop the data plan?

Thank you,
Cody

There are no special settings - the 6800 is not bound by the required data plan - only new models release after 11/04/08 - ie omnia and touch pro. The 6800 does not, but the lower level rejects at vzw literally dont understand there own policies. Ask for a data tech as soon as you can and they will help you.

Yeah, I agree with mknollman, although, I'm not sure the policy doesn't hold for xv6800's sold after Nov x, 2008. I would think that *is* a new PDA phone in their eyes. But who knows... I just told them I've had this phone for the first 9 or 10 months with no data plan and added it later, but now don't want it. I should be able to go back to no data plan since that's what I was doing in the first place. i.e. I don't think they can change my contract so that the data plan is now required and force a new $30/month fee.

Yeah, we got stuck in the arse with their new policy too.

My Wife's old LG was lost/stolen. She's a neophobe and I couldn't convince her to get one of the newer phones, but magically got her to accept my old 730 (weird, right?) based on the fact that we wouldn't have to shell out more money for a new phone.

Activated the old 730 over the phone with a rep. Never asked for nor was ever prompted for a data plan.

3 months later I'm noticing a HUGE increase in our bills. They automatically added the 730 to my old full data plan of 49.99 per month.

All auto data activities were turned off, no Exchange, pull, etc. She never used the Internet, hell she could barely figure out the pictures stored on SD.

Still have not gotten an acceptable response from Verizon about their theft of our money for this non-ordered service.

2000man, you have an anecdote to cover this one? Any grammatical issues with my post?

hey man, I have used a 6700 and my 6800 without a data plan for years. Wireless router at home helps.
I am on the data plan now, but thats so they would drop the $800 in data charges I incurred by my mistake... if you drop the data plan BE CAREFUL and put a DATA BLOCK on your account so no accidents happen.

Yeah, you can ask them to block your data but you can also just change the verizon connection setting so that the number #777 is changed to something else.

You can fix that also. Just rename HTC_CM_Guardian.exe or remove it from starting up. That's the program that's causing you settings to revert back to defaults.

For some reason mine would reset back to the 777 automatically just dialing up to get an mms message. But I had them block the data plan so it didn't accidentally get used. Jeez, the pay as you go is expensive!!!

I cant afford the data plan either, so I just use my wifi at home and lots of businesses have wifi. It's everywhere lol.

Quick question regarding the Verizon data plan. Let's say I upgrade to a phone that requires to carry a data plan(which I don't really want) and than decide I don't want it anymore, can I go back to my old phone(which doesn't require a data plan) and drop the plan?

Like others have said; turn off your data and put a block on data with Verizon.

You have to keep HTCGuardian.exe from starting. That's the program that looks for changes to the verizon settings, and resets them back to #777.

I was trying this hack (I have also done bunches of word searches on this site to see if there are more details) but couldn't find a file in the windows directory with that file name. the closest one I found was called HTC_CM_Guardian which I tried renaming but the #777 settings went right back after rebooting phone and/or accessing the data network. Could someone give me more details on this setting, or let me know if I went to the wrong place looking for the file? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Yes it is HTC_CM_Guardian.exe. I'll fix it in the original post.

Strange that it did not work for you. Did you make sure the rename actually took. After the reboot, check to see that the rename kept. And *then* try changing your #777 verizon settings.
