Without that echo back, the damn thing would be calling God knows who - probably people I don't want to talk to.

Jesus, I am going to go on an off topic tangent here (forgive me), but I am SOOOO close to dumping this crap and getting an iPhone. After the completely incompetent people at Assurion, the generally clueness Verizon trouble shooters, and my general frustration with Windows Mobile and the mediocre software... I'm on the verge of dumping it.

Somehow I am concerned that the AT&T iPhone situation won't be better, just different. No cut & paste? No voice dailing at all? WTF? Yet somehow 90% of the iPhone users are completely happy with the thing.

I'm supposed to get an xv6800 as a replacement for my 6700 tomorrow. Hopefully the shipping guys at Assurion stopped smoking pot long enough to put the correct phone in the box with my address on it. I swear you could train a chimpanzee to do that job, and somehow the Assurion shippers screwed it up twice already.

PLEASE keep me posted on how the ROM flash goes. I can't imagine Voice Command without the confirmation echo.

Seriously - that's the biggest reason I want an update to 6.1. I tried MSVC earlier using the stock rom and it did wind up dialing the wrong people and I'd have to grab the phone to disconnect the call before it went through. I had it working perfectly fine on my XV-6700 with MSVC 1.5.

I thought about the iPhone but there have been issues with it according to Endgadget. Some of the more notable ones are cracks developing in the plastic cases (Apple and AT+T won't own up to it - mostly the white ones though ) and the device hangs when switching between the 3G and Edge networks (not in all areas but in some). It seems Apple points at AT&T's network and AT&T points at Apple, speculation is about the way it hands off between the two networks though.

I guess the search for the perfect device goes on - perhaps the Android phones will work better.

When I was installing the ROM on my current XV6800, I received an "invalid command" error, and the only option I had was to exit. Anyway, I tried to hard reset, but it obviously goes back to the ROM screen, and when I try to run the update utility, it just freezes up. No idea what the hell is going on, but I'll give it a shot on my replacement device when it shows up.

Good luck to anyone who wants to give the update a shot though:

http://handsets.utstar.com/downloads...%20Upgrade.zip

According to the docs, the update covers the following:

•Upgraded OS to Windows Mobile 6.1
•Added EVDO Rev A capability
•Updated the MMS client to be compatible with WM 6.1
•Added Microsoft Remote Desktop Application
•Added capability to use VzNavigator application.
•Resolved compatibility issues with Microsoft Voice Command 1.6.
•Added capability to read micro SD card of up to 16GB memory.

I called Verizon on this since it wasn't posted on thier website support pages and they knew nothing about it. They did tell me that I could flash my device with it since it's a manufacturer's update but wouldn't actually be able to help troubleshoot it if something went wrong.

I'm planning on holding out for a post on Verizon's website so if it screws up then I can say that I got the update from them.

Good Luck

Verizon hopes to have it on their site tomorrow. I'm taking a wait and see approach. Has the GPS functionality been fully enabled? My cooked version enabled GPS, but nowhere near my satisfaction--only got a lock about 5% of the time.

Damn, that was perfect timing! I just opened the box for my new 6800 about an hour ago. So frak it, I'll upgrade...

Ok. It took a little longer than 10 minutes... More like 14-16 min...

I forgot to shut off my firewall, so I had to keep clicking "Allow" for a wide variety of stuff...

Dammit! It worked! My phone is up and running and fully operational. The Green Windows Mobile Screen says 6.1. ActiveSync worked. All my contacts are back! Calls work! Internet works! I got to Google!

Damn. Well something actually works as advertised. I'm utterly amazed.

Now I get to install apps to make the phone not suck. Where's that copy of JPLDialer_VWave.cab

Hello all, new here, this is my first post actually. Found this thread (and site) while searching for Verizon support of WM 6.1. I, too, just installed the patch a previous poster referenced, and wanted to share that it works just fine. I also happened to be talking to Verizon tech support before I installed it, mentioned that I was going to, and they encouraged me to do so and stated it wouldn't cause any warranty issues and that they would support me after the ROM update. Love the new ROM. Works great, no issues at all. I also remember seeing someone talk about data speeds, so I ran tests before and after.

BEFORE
1236 down/133 up

AFTER
1280 down/487 up

Speed tests were run on Speekeasy.net's speed tests.

If you haven't upgraded and want to, go for it!

Cheers,

Steve

Windows 6.1

Here is the direct link to the update. This is the update the Verizon web site directs you to.

Unfortunately, I was not able to get it to work. Gives me an error and says my device can not be updated. I spoke to Verizon on the phone. They can not support this update but she did tell me If I brought the phone to a Verizon store they could flash it for me while I wait. I may try that tonight and see if it is actually so.

I'll let you know how that goes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but stores can not do the update... You need to talk to someone further up the food chain at verizon. I would suggest getting on the phone with DTS or a higher level of CS rep. Stores do not flash windows phones in my experience.

Well, at this point all I can tell you is what Verizon Tech Support told me. She said if I brought my phone to a Verizon store with a tech dept. they could do it for me. I also spoke to Tech Support at UTSTARCOM about why the downloaded updater may not have worked for me and he thought it might have to do with my firewall or Anti-virus. So I will try the installer again without the firewall and if it doesn't work then I will go in to Verizon and see what they say.

I'd try another computer too.

Well, I got the update to work by turning off the firewall and anti-virus software. Had to call Verizon (#8899) to get the phone to work again.

I now have a question about ActiveSync (perhaps this is off topic of this thread although anyone updating to 6.1 will likely have the same question) I synced my phone on the PC prior to updating. How do I get my previous information back into the phone ?? When I plug the fresh phone in it tries to create a new relationship and sync to NEW information on the phone. How do I establish a previous relationship so I can "upload" my data from prior to the update? I hate this ActiveSync program !!!!

Is it safe to assume that the update that Verizon's site takes us to is no different than the update that's been on UTStar for almost a month?

The upgrade is available from the Verizon web site under Support. I upgraded several weeks ago. Upgrade went OK, but phone was very slow after upgrade. Could not connect to Exchange. Finally got email to sync manually, and calendar and contacts would not sync over the air. Had to sync via Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center. Spent 2 weeks working with Verizon tech support and Microsoft support and would not sync. Have replacement phone back on Windows Mobile 6.0, which works fine. Proceed with caution. Verizon has no flash back to WM 6.0.

Why, exactly, should it be free? And where can I find free software and service that does everything VZNavigator can do?

His point is....why would you pay $120 to rent something that you can own for $100 (Garmin Mobile XT) if you get PDA software with Verizon's GPS unlocked? And....any of those PDA mobile GPS software programs work way better than VZnavigator.

Well, free isn't exactly the correct term. As someone who appreciates economic theory and capitalism, I understand that "free" is frequently a loaded term.

However, I am already paying Verizon about $230 a month for minutes for my family, and an unlimited data plan for me. For them to ask for another $10 a month for the 'privilege' of using substandard software is disgusting to me.

Verizon seems to like to do that sort of thing. They like to "nickle and dime" their customers and hold their customers hostage while they continue to rip them off. Sure it makes their shareholders money, but it annoys the customers. It creates an atmosphere of hatred and contempt of Verizon from the very people Verizon relies on.

Google Maps is free (to me). Its free to download and free to use. And it works BETTER than VZNavigator.

Only Verizon doesn't like that - they can't "nickle and dime" their hostages when they use free Google software, so they jerked around with the GPS functions to try to force people to pay more money for their crappy, substandard software.

But a group of intelligent and motivated programmers fixed the problem. Hooray for them!

As for better alternatives for Verizon's crappy, overpriced software, look around. They are out there.

Actually TeleNav is not "crappy Verizon" software, it is a third-party service that Verizon, Sprint and AT&T all license for their GPS services. I don't know how "good" it is, opinions passionately vary obviously from what I read in other posts. But at least Sprint does offer it "bundled" with their other plans so the fees are at least hidden as part of the data plan service. I DO wish Verizon would offer some inclusive bundling packages at reasonable cost (hahhh, fat chance, I know) but if they would offer a 450 minute Everything (probably call it Works for trademark purposes) package including unlimited phone data, gps, messaging, wireless synching and 5 Gig tethering for $69.95 I'd be a happy camper. They can forget the tv's and radios siriuses hulu's and yahoo's, just give me the serious stuff that I can use to MAKE money with, not spend it. (On Verizon, that is)

Angry

Downloaded Verizon's 6.1 upgrade for my i760 and ran it; bricked my phone. Called Verizon; no i760's in stock, so they shipped me a xv6800. I promptly opened it, downloaded Verizon's 6.1 upgrade for the xv6800. Started to install; error message, bricked.

Verizon is now sending me out a new xv6800 and they've told me that when I get it I should not upgrade to 6.1. How helpful!
