Unresponsive keyboard (and other issues)... Help!

Hi all... first time posting, so please be kind to me! I bought a Sprint Mogul/PPC-6800 back in September 2007 and it has been in a rapid decline since I bought it. I'll summarize my problems, in descending order of importance.

1) Some specific keys on the slide out keyboard have become increasingly unresponsive
2) System lags despire doing several hard resets and stripping phone of almost all 3rd party software
3) White hotspots in lower left corner of screen
4) Any word on whether Skype Mobile will ever work with this phone?
5) Bundled screenguard is crap. What do you recommend?

Now little more detail:
The most annoying problem is that *some* of the buttons on the slide-out keyboard have become unresponsive... primarily the period, s, t and a couple of others.

When I want to type a period, for example, I need to press the key 5, 6, 7 or more times before a single period will appear on the screen.

Obviously this is an incredibly annoying quirk. I am using the most current ROM (2.17.651.0) and I don't remember if this issue existed before I upgraded. The only 3rd party apps I have installed are Google Maps and Opera Mobile. I also have a Kingston 2gb micro SD card installed.

Is this something I can only deal with by sending it in for warranty repair?

Also, if I send it in for warranty repair, will they take care of those annoying hotspots in the lower left corner of the screen? (anyone have experience in getting these fixed?)

Lastly, am I just totally out of touch for being offended that my local Sprint store wants to charge me $10 for a packet of screenguards? These are, after all, paper-thin sheets of plastic. What screenguards would you recommend?

Thanks all

regarding the unresponsive keyboard, I too have experience this after a recent trip...

so do you fly often/ever? if yes, did this problem occur AFTER you took the phone on a flight?

for me, its not that bad, but I do have to press firmly and surely for the key to register, typing as i had previously result in many missed key.

as to unresponsive unit, i sorta feel that too, but there's an overclocking app floating out there, you should see if that help or not

I have flown with the phone but I cannot recall if this happened before or after.

Any other suggestions?

I just found this post by doing a search on Google. Yes, I am experiencing this issue. And what intrigues me even more is bitslizer question about recently flying. I just recently returned from a long trip with many layovers. I've noticed it becoming much more of a problem. bitslizer, what is your thinking here? Do you think it has anything to do with going through xray? Clue us in.

I've read on other forums that it is because of HTC Home plugin - which I have installed. Supposedly it has a major memory leak. But it doesn't explain why schleima is experiencing it. I'm at a loss and really frustrated by this one.

Of coarse I'm out of warranty and didnt purchase the extended warranty.

unresponsive keyboard is definitely a problem of mine. I have the newest Alltel Radio and running the newest DCD 3.0.4 ROM (WM6.1) but i had this problem way before. i honestly think it's a hardware issue and not a software issue.

actually I was guessing it may have to do with air pressure change affecting the key switches, but that's probably not the real issue due to below.

however that was with the old Sprint ROM

with the latest rom (DCD WM6.1) I'm expereincing the opposite

very frequently instead of unresponsive key, I'm getting double type.

Keyboard Issues on Mogul

I havent been flying, but I am having trouble with my keyboard. I have the unresponsive keys and the double taps.

I recently upgraded the ROM to 3.35.651.2.

I havent been able to determine if the problem is software or hardware related. But it's very frustrating using the keyboard at this point.

Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Thanks

Unresponsive and overly Responsive keyboard

My Mogul has for quite some time suffered from the same double typing symptom a few of you have already mentioned. But now, just these past few weeks, various keys have become unresponsive and the double type issue has worsened. For example, if I go to type "you" on the slide out keyboard I'll end up with "yuuuu", or just "uuuuu".

I have the most recent ROM and, as I was very interested to read may be the cause, have done a great deal of flying lately, mostly this past month.

This issue has past the point of annoying and advanced to where I now simply don't use the keyboard. I suppose I should take this up with Sprint or HTC but I would like to know more before embarking down that dark road or corporate tech support.

I have other issues with the phone as well, but most are more Windows Mobile problems or problems that phone had out of the box

there are a lot of us with the white spot in the corner of the display. I'm with verizon and they just sent me a replacement phone with the same problem. i'll keek tryin.g to get one without it, or die trying. I hate the idea of paying this kind of cash for a phone that is loosing the display.

I have a bunch of keys that are sticking as well. Specially when I try to use numbers. Won't matter anymore, I'm getting a 3G iPhone!

I think this is a hardware issue. Maybe dirt under the keys or something. Must be a way to clean the dirt from under the keys somehow.

That's me! I flew down to Tampa, FL and back last week (2 legs each way)
keyboard was fine for the 3 days I was down there... now that I'm back, my 'o' key only picks up keypresses if I bear down on it harder than the rest... (normal strength keying -it won't trigger the 'o' now)

Very strange... I think it might be getting better slightly... I'm not a heavy keyboard user though...

these phones just have issues. I have had 2 NEW ones and they both did the EXACT same things. lower lefthand corner of the screen gets a bright spot after a few months, center silver button on the top scraches off and turns red, the "void" screw on the back lower lefthand side falls out within a week. the T button, period, Fn button, Y, and others wear out. these I presume are all just a product of crappy design. especially the keypad. that's not all, they have tons of problems with software also like HORRIBLE memory leaks that can basically only be fixed with a hard reset, sometimes when u type a message the words go blank (lasts for about a day), refuses to send messages regardless of reception, looses service all the time, IE works only when it feels like it, crappy battery life, and laggs horribly with only one program open occasionally. again, this is my experience with 2 NEW phones, not refurbished. I have learned to deal with the problems, but the phone is definatly not for the short tempered or impatient.

I had one for 2 years that had no keyboard problems, and then the alt key required more and more pressure until it stopped working completely. I finally had enough and took it to sprint to replace since I had the insurance. The THREE refurbs in 2 weeks they replaced me with have been even worse. It's never the same keys and there is usually a combination of some insensitive keys and some oversensitive keys, so it's not just a matter of typing everything harder.

The problem here is that these keyboards are of crapy design. A normal keyboard on a phone has little metal cups that are vented to retain a normal air pressure, so at different altitudes they function the same. The XV6800 does not have these vents so when you fly the air inside expands quite significantly. and some air will escape or move to another key. When you land the plastic over the keys seals them again so you have some keys that too much air under them (hard press and unresponsive) and some with too little air under them (double types and stuck keys).
Now mattgrantlackey's issues with the XV6800 encompass just about every problem I see on these phones. Basically these are just awful phones, everything about them is terrible, sure they play nice for a week or so, then they fall apart, literally. Don't get another one, just move on to another phone.
