iGuidance 4.0, slow refresh?

So I'm having a weird issue with iGuidance 4. It seems to work for everyone but me. I'll fire up iG, and it will get satellites fine and turn the icon green. I have 20meg free when starting iG, so I know that's not it.

When running, it will rarely ever refresh the screen. If I tap the screen to pull it out of Full Screen mode, it will refresh. Then, a few seconds later, it will go into Full Screen mode and refresh again. Then it will just sit and not change until I tap the screen again.

Any ideas?

Sorry to you guys, but also glad Im not the only one. What programs do you guys have running and installed? Perhaps there is some commonality between us.

This is one of the reasons I moved to TomTom. I could never get IGuidance 4 to run smoothly.

I don't like iGuidance since it won't keep the backlight on while using it and there is no way to set it to be on.

How many SATs does your IG4.0 find? I've found tht when it has 3/5 or 5/5 I can't get it to trace accuratley and even the speed of my car is not tracked. But when I get more SATs it works better. The weather has a lot to do with it with rain and cluds making it harder to track SATs.

I'll be updating my Internal GPS FAQ later today with GPS software notes.

Concerning IGuidance, I haven't tested it on the road yet. I Just tested to see if it recognized the internal GPS. I remember having problems with IGudiance before when targeting it to the Microsoft GPS redirector when using my Bluetooth GPS. I had to point IGuidance directly to it. This seems to be a problem with INav inability to work properly with the Microsoft GPS redirector driver. Customers should shoot off an email to INav, so hopefully they can fix this issue. One thing to try (I haven't yet), is to install different redirector such as Franson GPSGate and point the source port at com4, and create a target virtual COM port at COM8 or COM9, then point IGuidance at the virtual port, and see if that works better with IGuidance.

I used to have the same problem w/ inav & ms gps driver.

Funny thing is TomTom cannot start the gps port com4, once w/ the help of gpstest to activate the port, it's working fine. Inav is able to start the port but lag like crazy afterwards...

Just tried the Franson GPSGate work around on a test drive. It worked!

I had the same issues before applying this work around. I set the source as COM4, and made a target to COM port 2. Pointed IGuidance to COM2, and everything was dandy.

Yea, but it has a 14 day free trial to see if it works for you. Time for you guys to fire iNav a bug report.

I've just updated my FAQ with detailed information on how to configure GpsGate for iGuidance.

OK, so just to confirm, here's my experience with iGuidance and GPSGate. Combined, they worked great with two big annoyances:

1) GPSGate runs fine if I soft reset, or if I start up another app like Google Maps. If I try to run it without first doing a soft reset, it never opens the GPS port, sort of like what TomTom does.

2) iGuidance does not disable the screen dimming or standby. This is of course a really big issue for GPS use, and is the one that could discourage me from using it anymore.

Read my FAQ, I refer to AstronusX's AstroGPSLauncher , among many other applications, which can automate this process.

Are you sure iGuidance doesn't disable standby while running? It does for me. As for the backlight issue, I'm working on a Mortscript to keep it on while iGuidance is running. I'll post back when I have a solution.

On another note, AstronusX brought to my attention of a freeware alternative to GpsGate, available here:
SourceForge.net: GPSProxy

No one has tested it yet though, so it would be great if someone here could do that and report back the results.

Yea, I just saw the AstroGPSLauncher in there. Works good. I also posted in his original thread asking about auto-start/auto-kill of GPSGate.

GPSProxy is a .NET app, wouldn't that make it pretty bulky?

I just leave GPSGate running in the background all the time. It's pretty light on resources. But now that you mention it I'll put some code in my MortScript to start if it's not already running, and exit on iGuidance termination if it wasn't running before start (the script started it).

I'm 95% done with the script, everything works fine so far.

I created an iGuidance one tap autolauncher. If GpsGate is not running, it starts it. The script then stores your device's current Power timeout, and backlight timeout and brightness settings. Then sets your device for no timeouts for power and backlight, and sets your backlight to maximum brightness. It then sets iGuidance to skip the startup warning dialog, before launching iGuidance through AstroGPSLauncher. Once you exit iGuidance the script will restore your previous backlight/power settings. The only thing not working in the script right now is that it doesn't terminate GpsGate on exit if the script started GpsGate. I have not found a reliable way to close GpsGate. All current methods I've tried of closing/terminating GpsGate leave an unresponsive icon in the tray of the Today screen.

For those who are interested, I've made a copy of this script available for download HERE. Instructions on how to install/use the script are in the included "iGuidanceInternalGPSLauncher.mscr" Mortscript file.

What sort of iG 4.0 bug is going on with the new ROM that came out few days ago?
