Did I screw up? XV6700 vs. i760

Okay, I've had an xv6700 for almost a year. in August my joystick died, so i got a warranty replacement (factory refurb).

That one worked for around a month or two, then the start button began to die.

The next one came with a dead LED for 1/2 the keyboard illumination.

The next one worked for a week and a half and now it's joystick is about dead (mostly stuck on the depressed function).

So, since this was gonna be the FOURTH replacement since August, the rep was willing to go to his manager and ask for a different device for me... One of which could have been the Samsung i760.

I told them I have to have WM because it's the only OS that my work will support to hook up to the exchange server, which is the whole point of a converged device for me.

So, I thought about the pros:
  • same size (large) touch screen
  • #'s on front
  • Cool, new device that not many have

Then I thought about the downsides[list][*]I already have two car cradles for the xv6700[*]I already have a 2 gig mini-sd[*]I already have a couple data cables and A/C chargers that work with mini-usb[*]Lots of Mad scientists making rom tweaks and cool stuff for xv6700[list]

I've been running the 3.5 Helmi kitchen and like the functionality on my xv6700.

The idea of having to sink the money into accessories made me shy away from this swap, because the i760 didn't seem to do anything groundbreaking that my xv6700 doesn't already do now...

So, I told him to just send me another xv6700...

Did I make a mistake passing up the chance to do my swap with a i760?

not really, tell u the truth my friend just got the i760 and its pretty similar to the 6700. if anything, i still love the look of the 6700 over the i760. plus the keyboard is the best ive ever seen on the 6700. they both run wm6, and even on the verizon wm6 rom, the i760 is still a little buggy and slow on the i760, even without programs installed. when you go to landscape mode it still takes the same time to rotate between modes as on the 6700

plus, i found the buttons on the i760 annoying as hell. the send(green) and end(red) buttons are on the side of the device, and the send button is especially hard to press without hitting it soft enough so that the keyboard doesnt slide out. the stylus's position is terrrible ( i have no idea who thought of it)

basically what im trying to say is that comparing the 2 phones, they can both run WM, from there its just a matter of the physical aspects of the phone, and i think the 6700 is way more comfortable and the i760 has some terrible button/stylus positioning. keyboard a plus for 7600.

I think you're also going to have to put a post up on the i760 message board and see what kind of response you'll get. My first PDA was the XV6700, which I loved, but it was kind of buggy, and I had to constantly soft reset after it got hung up all the time. But I loved it because it did so much, in such a little package.

Finally my poor 6700 died, and I needed to get a new phone. I contemplated the 6800 for such a long time. But then came along the i760, which although highly anticipated by others, I had never heard of. So I did some research, and saw multiple USER reviews, and not necessarily editor reviews, which consistently rated it very highly.

So I decided to take the plunge, and I can tell you that I completely LOVE the i760. (To me) it seems they took everything good about the 6700, and kept it, and fixed all the bad with the 6700.

Example, the screen size is exactly the same, yet the i760 is thinner and lighter. It's also sleeker looking with no external antenna.

Another plus is the front side keypad. This makes sending out quick text messages so easy, and dialing possible without having to look at the keypad. (I could never master this on my old 6700).

Also, the screen is quite bright, and usable when outdoors in the sun. I'm afraid this wasn't possible with my 6700.

Another benefit is the use of WM6 instead of WM5. Now, the voice command is much more powerful. Instead of having to program my voice contacts manually, and having a limit of ?25 or so. The OS can recognize your voice and whatever contacts you have in your phone's memory. So now, without any programming, I can just say "Call John Smith's Cell"... and it will start dialing. Or I can even say "dial 2-1-2-5-5-5-1-2-1-2", and it will dial.

I'm sure there are more things to say, or even things that are more important to other people, but as someone who has had and tweaked, and used (and LOVED) the XV6700... I can tell you firsthand that if you have and like the XV6700, you will LOVE the i760.

Check out the forums, read the reviews, even CNET's user reviews are helpful.

Interesting... Well, I'm in the process of installing Helmi's WM6 on my XV6700, so I think I'll be okay there.

I've been running MS Voicecommand forever (I coughed up the $40 for the version you got for free with you i760. But can you imagine if you'd had that all along like I have???)

Yeah, the front buttons would be nicer for sure. I think for me it comes down to the fact that I'd already sunk costs into Mini SD and two car cradles...

I think they might have actually sent me a decent replacement unit. It looks/feels pretty new. In fact, it has a pretty recent rom and a really new version of bootloader. I'm crossing my fingers that it'll be an okay unit.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen anything GROUNDBREAKING in the PPC world that would send me running to ditch my xv6700... Little improvements, but I want something that would take my breath away! *hehe*

It's true, it's not groundbreaking per se, but I really believe that if you were to ever use it for even just a day or two, you would be able to see how much better it is overall.

I just went from the 6700 to the touch. If you can live without a keyboard it is well worth the upgrade. Just install the pcm keyboard (imitates Iphone).

However I was only using the 6700 keyboard maybe 5 times a day. Now I use my touch probably 4x as much as my 6700. THe 6700 was nice but too sloooow and not enough memory.

I've had the 6700 for 2 yrs now
My brother just got the i760 last week

So comparing the two, I've found that the i760 is a great deal!
The advantages: MUCH louder Speaker, built-in Voice-Command ($40 value), built-in Picsel Browser, other built-in Customizations, Awesome front-number keypad, so easy to Dial & send TXT, The Camera is 1.3MP but pics are taken quicker & much clearer than on the 6700, The phone is pretty fast overall, much faster than a stock- 6700. The only downside that I saw when comparing i760 vs. 6700 is that the Talk/End, Window, OK button were in the most ODD places on the i760!

Every Phone has its Advantages & disadvantages, so to each his own...
The good thing is that Verizon gives you 30-days to try out the phone!

The only reason I havent jumped ship is because I'm waiting for the 6800, which is supposed have these advantages over the i760:
1) Upgradable to EVDO Rev.A vs. Not-Upgradable
2) 2.0MP Camera vs. 1.3MP
3) 256MB built-in memory vs. 128
4) Better button layout of Window, OK, Talk, End buttons
