simple rom-kirvin_CS_35_104 Seems to have bugs

I have installed this ROM on 3 separate PPC-6700s (My company uses them) and all 3 of them would not restart after you did a soft reset. They would stay stuck in the Windows Mobile screen and not go any futher. Mind you, this doesn't happen everytime, it's random. The only way to fix it is to do a hard reset and then it comes back but you have to setup all your apps and your exchange stuff again which is very very annoying.

what ROM were you migrating from? I installed this on my Sprint 6700 and its worked great. I had gone from the original to 2.2. to Colonel's 3.3 and finally to Jeff's. Last week I flashed this ROM to a coworker's and its having the same problem you described. I was thinking about doing the same series of ROM upgrades on his and see if that helps. I can't think of any other reason why it works so well with so many and then has this exact problem with a few. There's actually another thread that has a few posts about this issue.

Anyone having any problems installing the Palm Threaded app with this? I installed it from the treocentral links and as soon as I finish I get no service, a hard reset back to the KC&S ROM and service comes back. I'm a born again noob btw (haven't done any hacking on the PPC-6700 for probably 18 months) so I could easily be doing something wrong or something.

EDIT: Nevermind, their instructions are a little confusing. You just have to install the WM6 version and don't do anything else they suggest and you're done.

So I really like the rom and it runs really smoothly until i have to soft reset. It has frozen up on the splash screen twice and I have had to then do a hard reset. Any ideas why this might be occurring?

Edit: apperently several people have had this issue. Anyone have any work arounds?

I know it's Helmi. I didn't want to name names. And I definitely know that if it were not for his work, my phone would be a completely different device, and probably broken from hitting the wall.

I don't know what Jeff did to tweak his kitchen, but I do know this.
1) Using Jeff's version I was able to add more OEM's.
2) Put OEM's that normally did not work well w/ other OEM's I was adding.
3) And, when it was all said and done, I still had more space available.
4) Jeff never claimed it was his. He gave all the credit to everyone else.
Here's the 2nd line of his post- ACKNOWLEDGMENTS - First, I'd like to thank Helmi, Luv2Chill, Colonel, Tiermann and all the others on whose work I've built. This wouldn't be possible without you guys.

I appreciate everything he's done for the community.
Yes, I think he's a genius.
Yes, I think Jeff took Helmi's work and tweaked it.
Yes, I think some people in Microsoft's Mobile Team might take offense to "Helmi's" kitchen and profit's from said kitchen.

All that being said. Helmi's awesome. The site's awesome. Donations well deserved, but let's not get into a moral/integrity battle over who's taking who's credit. Jeff simply took a pirated movie and added some artwork and menus to the cover.

I've been using this kitchen for 4 weeks today. I've had no issues.
Last week, I cooked up a rom for my wifes phone, and this has happened to her twice. Only way out of it was to boot into safemode, which I always include in my roms.

When you cooked up your rom, I'm assuming you added some OEM's.
Could you possibly list all the oem's you included in your rom?
My phone and my wife's are both on Verizon. I added different OEM's to her's.
Maybe with a list of you're oem's, I can see what you have incommon w/ her phone, that I don't, and perhaps we can figure out what's causing it.

Go here.
Stuck In Bootloader? Heres What you need - PPCGeeks

Download the uni_bootloader file, and run it. Then you can do a soft-reset and you're all set.

so im just made it back from the Verizon store with the "new phone" and it doesnt even have the VOID sticker over the screw in back. This is my second refurbished phone since Dec. '05, and its cheaper looking and feeling than the last one.

One thing i should mention is that my battery doesnt hold a charge anymore. I think it may just die in thr process of rebooting. I took it out and have it in the cradle charging by itself. Once the light tirns green, i will try the flash update again, then if not try the last posts unlock software. Hopefully one of these 2 methods will work. Until then, thanks for everything!!!

I'll let you know how it goes, if anyone cares.

p.s. I already ordered a new battery from one of the recommended vendors
in the replacement battery thread here.

Disable the HTC Home Today plugin and the bootup freezes should go away. That said, Helmi's WM6 ROM is better than my last WM5 AKU 3.5. You should install that instead. Just as much RAM/storage, just as fast, new cool features.

That's good news. I'm just waiting for a kitchen. I have a bunch of stuff installed from hard-reset, and I got spoiled w/ the oem's.

I know the controversies etc. BUT,,,,,,, The work you did TWEAKING the 3.5 was/is still awsome. I changed to WM6 based on the quoted post. I am not certain that I won't switch back to your last 3.5 or try your VERSION of the 3.5 kitchen for a home brew. As a business traveler, the clean and simple ROM's were a godsend. Because I spend most of my life in an airplane, keeping battery life up and the ease of getting to the comm manager and ease of navigation rather than shiny toys was great... your last rom was the only one that MY 6700 would work on A2DP (even WM6 is not usable...probably one of those bad radiochips) So far the WM6 is showing me a few memory conflicts/hangups etc....stuff that your work on 3.5 had ironed out on that rom. I know we arent't supposed to beg you to do this again....but would you give us some hacks for WM6 to tweak this bad boy out????

With great respect for you AND the kitchen team

Joe

yeah, i don't plan to upgrade to WM6 yet. i figured jeff saying helmi's was better was just being polite, but it did have me wondering. but glad to have my suspicion confirmed and echo your sentiments.

I hit my first problem with WM6 today ... I was using the standard battery because it was the weekend and I don't use the pda much on weekends ... or so I thought .. after reading an ebook while listening to xm radio for about an hour at breakfast ... I shut everything down (I thought) ... and went to a bowling tournament ... instead of shutting down bluetooth I accidently turned on wifi ... as you could imagine ... I drained the battery to zip over two hours of trying to connect to my home system (10miles away) ... I figured no biggie ... plugged in the car charger and rebooted .. all of my programs where fine ... but lots of the settings ... IE ring tone ... speed dials ... soft key assignments to name a few where back to default ... this was strange to me ... soooooo ... I charged the battery for awhile and redid all the settings ... then took the battery out for about 20 minutes ... poof ... all the same settings where back to defaults .... this never happened on wm5 ... I switch back and forth from i730, treos, 6700, 6600 regularly (gives me a sense of a new unit ... holds me over till vzw comes out with a new toy ... do I have the gadget thing bad or what ... but alas I digres) When I switch back and forth I leave the batteries out ... the only one I need to mess with after rebooting is the 6600 WM2003se ... and now the 6700 with wm6 ... I did test the spb back up and it worked flawlessly ... even restoring the settings that where lost ... so that's at least good ... I really don't understand why this happens .. but it did ... and it might be a pain if your battery goes dead ... and yes I did get the warnings but the phone was in my bowling bag and I didn't get them till I booted it on the car charger .. so you might want to make sure you don't run the battery into the ground ... this doesn't happen just changing the battery ... which doesn't make any sense to me at all ????

Edit: sorry .. I thought I was in the wm6 thread ... been a long day

personally, i just think that kirvin's c&s + is the best thing to happen to my 6700 in some time. i am very impressed with it. i feel like i have a new & better phone. just a note concerning someone previous saying how he received a refurburshed device. i recently replaced one of my 6700's the other day at verizon. i told them that under no uncertain circumstances would i accept anything else but a new device. i had to speak to the manager because the customer service people just couldn't do it. i don't think anyone should have to accept anything less than a new unit.

Well after much playing I seem to have found the problem. I worked by only installing one program at a time and soft resetting several times. It seems that when I install Epocrates(a medical program) the splash screen freezing happens. I didn't add any oem's to the rom though, I just installed it as is.

I built a custom ROM based on Kirvin's C&S+ kitchen and i must say that the jump to wm6 can wait for me -- i've had minimal issues with it and am very happy -- the one thing i'd like to change is the backlight setting -- it keeps reverting to 7 seconds. does anyone know how to change this?

There is actually a very easy fix for this, although it does not make any sense why it fixes it.

Go to the Backlight screen.
Set your battery power time to whatever you want. (i.e. 1min, 2min, etc.)

Then you need to make a change to the registry.

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/Backlight

There is a folder called LockLevel
Rename the folder to LockLevelx (the "x" can be any number or letter)
Then restart the device.

Basically, renaming the folder does not fix the problem, but forces WM5 to remake the folder.
For some reason, when it remakes the folder, the settings 'stick' and they stop resetting to 10secs.

The same result could probably be achieved by deleting "LockLevel", but I haven't tried deleting it yet.

I can say that the rename method worked for both my phone, and my wife's phone. Now I just have a folder called LockLevelx and a folder called LockLevel.
