Arnaud PushMail ... not working?

Hello. Is anyone using Arnaud Pushmail? I just upgraded to this ROM and this is the only one that I'm having trouble with. I've installed .NET Compact Framework 2.0b and also tried 3.5. I get the same error, that it didn't load.

Just curious. Other than that, Jeff did a Kick Butt job on this ROM.

Awesome ROM, but have 4 questions to everyone...

1. I LOVE using Arnald's Pushmail software. I've been using it since the original ROM on my Sprint PPC5-6700. I've used it on other cooked ROMS, as well. It reqires NET CF 2.0, but I've used with 3.5, as well. BUT, for whatever reason, it won't work with Jeff's ROM? It's driving me crazy, as I LOVE this program and it's just the program that keeps me wanting to use my PPC-6700.

Anyone else having issues or fixes? I'm including a screenshot of the error.

2. In my other ROMS, I still had to install Bluetooth Audio software (BT Audio Today) and Caller ID via Bluetooth (IDTransferV1.00). Are both of these files still required to hear music via my bluetooth headset and to get Caller ID info through Microsoft Voice Command?

3. I have pictures attached to some of my contacts. When using the picture contact on the main screen, it won't load certain contacts? Not sure how to better describe that. I select it, and it won't populate the screen.

4. Every now and then, I notice that the phone puts itself into SILENT mode. Both phone and PDA volume is dropped down to ZERO. But there is no Vibrate either...

Other than these issues, this ROM is freaking fantastic!

I had been waiting to see or do my own BT fix before installing the latest and greatest Clean & Simple ROM and now I see I am too late to use Jeff's last and best - the Clean & Simple Plus version has been pulled down from the FTP server at PPCGeeks. If any one has this version, please PM or email me. Large files can be send for free using YouSendIt - Send large files - transfer delivery - FTP Replacement

I also want to echo the thanks and praise for Jeff. His first ROM made my 6700 useable. I used to have to also carry a 650 so I could actually get or make a phone call. His time and talents will be sorely missed.

...
what's different between his 'clean and simple plus' and the generic version linked on page 2 of this thread?

What's different? Per Jeff:

"I've tweaked this to squeeze as much speed out of the Apache as I can without giving up too much usable memory. This means that while I've decreased the size of various file system caches, I've increased the size of the PagePool from 6MB to 8MB. I've reorganized the Start Menu to give you quick access to everything with minimal clutter. I've cut out unnecessary files from several OEMs and system modules to decrease the overall size of the ROM and the number of files jammed into \Windows. I've integrated many of the new HTC applications and utilities and tweaked them to work together as cleanly as possible. I've automatically unlocked the now blank Ext_ROM partition and moved your Temporary Internet Files there to keep them out of your main storage. I've unified the overall look of the user interface as much as possible. And I've preconfigured just about everything with different default settings so you can just flash, sync and go. This kitchen builds the ROM your carrier should have given you."

Again, per Jeff, (You will) have the fastest, cleanest and easiest Apache out there and can outperform a brand new HTC Mogul

I am using Kevin's last version and loving it. It would be great to get a copy of clean and simple Plus, since that obviously was his swan song. I'm surprised it's not up on his website. If anyone can post it here, it would be much appreciated.

Personally I relate to him leaving the ROM scene behind. I am a writer and you have to keep distractions to a minimum. A project like tweaking a phone is fun, but ultimately unfulfilling if it takes over your life.

Thanks Kevin, you might feel like you have wasted your time, but you have helped a lot of people get more enjoyment and productivity out of their phones. Good luck on your novel!

Per the other forums, he pisses some of the other guys off because he's using some of their cooked stuff to make his own. I say.. "aren't they all?" They're taking HTCs ROM and "cooking" it to something of their creation!

Sad... but hey. If anyone has a copy. Give it to me nd I will host it on my webserver so you all can download it.

Just to see what would happen, I clicked on the link in Post #1. What happened was I downloaded the file!!! Go figure. I also was able to download the generic file on page 2. Try the links. PPC-Geeks has redone their site and server. Maybe it's just an accidental hit. Or maybe the files are available again.
I'm still a little afraid to actually USE the KC&S+ rom because I have Qwest and not Sprint. And also it (and all the new roms) feels a little beyond my tech level. But for now, the file is available as advertised. And if I get braver, I actually have it to try out.

Jeff posted that rom on 8/10 and it's always been available. The hubub occurred when he posted an accompanying kitchen on 8/21; it was taken down after less than a day. The kitchen, if available () would have allowed users to cook their own using Jeff's special spices on top of the Helmi R4 kitchen. Jeff also put a user-friendly front-end on it to reduce the intimidation factor. I think the community will miss him especially with WM6 coming up.

Oh... Well thanks for the clarification. This here member of the community will especially miss that "user-friendly front-end to reduce the intimidation factor." Wish I had been more quick on the click on 8/21.

The funny part is, Jeff did his for free. The "other" guy they worship is taking $ donations for his work.

To bad we lost him now. WM6 is coming tomorrow and I would love to see what he does w/ that.

Re: C&S+
I just sent you a PM.
I had someone send me a link a couple of days after it was removed from PPCGeeks. If you can download it from the link I sent you, please put it up on your server so others can enjoy it.

It's basically the same kitchen we had, but w/ a bunch of changes to it.
Definitely more user friendly. And, since he removed so many useless files, I was able to dump a bunch of OEM's in, and I didn't get any errors.
Usually it's hit/miss when I select so many OEM's.

I cooked up my own ROM using it. I'm on Verizon, and everything worked.
I put all the same OEM's I've been using, and it definitely more stable than using the other kitchen.

Also, when I get home later today, I'll try to upload it to a free hosting site so other's can get it from there as well.

The "other guy they worship" is helmi himself, who is the one who made all of this possible. Without him you (nor me nor kirvin nor anyone else) would even have AKU3 kitchens not to mention WM6.

Helmi finds it offensive for people to take his work and re-release it as their own. Believe me when I tell you that no one here, not you nor I nor kirvin nor anyone else in the Apache community has the low-level knowledge to do what Helmi does to create these (if you think you do, then I invite you to try). If you've used an AKU3 or (soon to be) WM6 ROM then you owe a HUGE debt of gratitude to helmi for spending so much of his time and energy doing the work no one else has been able to do. Did you know he doesn't even have a functioning Apache? Up until now he has gotten nothing out of it.

And he only started taking donations because I urged him to do so. With that money he can buy the Mogul or the next device everyone will be clamoring around for custom ROMs for. Believe me, with the amount of work he puts in, any donations he receives will be a mere pittance. He's also a hell of a nice guy and I hope karma takes good care of him because he deserves it.

The situation with kirvin got ugly because I asked him not to release a kitchen and after agreeing not to he did so anyway without any notice or asking permission of anyone. Instead of working with our community he decided to go around it. We didn't remove the kitchen at all nor did we insist that he do so. He removed it himself and rather than make it into a patch (which would have been perfectly acceptable) he decided to just abandon the whole thing--which was his choice.

You guys can do whatever you want but keep in mind that if you drive helmi away there's not likely to be anyone else to take his place. Want to keep seeing new operating systems on your Apache (or very likely your next CDMA PDA)? Then take care not to bite the hand that feeds you. Helmi's request is not at all unreasonable.

I hope that helps explain this.

Bravo. Good words and props to a good guy. Helmi does deserve all the kudos. He's has done a TON and I will say that he's the pioneer of this.

Nonetheless, Kirvin's ROM made it out and, from what I've heard, it's pretty freakin good. There are some out there that want it and if we can find a source for it, then so be it. That's why I offered to host the file. Again, nothing against Helmi and all that he's done.

Regardless of how it came to be. I want to try it out. As soon as I finish this post, I'll go and thank Helmi by sending a donation his way. A well deserved donation. I think everyone here should pony up and send him a donation!

Fine, if Kirvin's kitchen is so great, by all means share and use it. But you don't have to at the same time disparage what Helmi has done for this the Apache community. Luv2chill said it better than I ever could, but everyone owes him a lot. If you like Kirvin's ROM so much, use it. The rest of us are moving on to the WM6 rom and future kitchen by "the other guy". Have fun with your "Clean and Simple Plus".

Yeah, you'd love to see what Jeff does with WM6 after Helmi hacks it to work for the Apache. If Jeff is so great why didn't he come out with WM6 himself? Where was the Kirvin Clean and Simple WM6 Kitchen? You guys are incredible. Since you appear to be a car guy, how great would your car be if your installer had all the skill in the world but no aftermarket parts to use because the guy who adapted those parts for your car wasn't around? That's basically what "the other guy" has done -- taken an OS that wasn't meant to run on the 6700 and done the difficult work to get it running on it. All so you can have your installer tweak it and put it in your car and get all the credit... while the guy in the back doing all the hard work gets blasted for accepting donations. Unbelievable.

End of the day it's still a PDA phone - a tool, device, and I appreciate the work anyone did to replace the POS ROM's that Sprint and Verizon should have been updating this entire time.

Let's face it, if the actual phone companies didn't release such crappy versions there would be no need for anyone to tweak, reverse engineer, or do any extreme work for these things.

Also, I've never heard of Helmi or whatever, but if he's the guy that did the work and has a fan club, well then he's earned the props and any money people send his way.

However, it's his choice to spend the time and effort. It's for his own reasons to do this and I greatly appreciate it.

For the record, it was never my intention to "hijack" anything. It was never about credit, it was about branding and expectations. Putting my name on the variant kitchen I posted (and I took down, it was not removed by PPCgeeks) was only intended to convey the ease of use and simplicity people had come to associate with my ROMs. I honestly had no idea would be interpreted otherwise, had no idea of the troubles Helmi'd had on XDAdevs, and meant no offense.

I believe Jeff gave credit to the kitchens origins every time he has posted a ROM or a kitchen. There is more going on here than what has been posted. Jeff took Helmi's work and took it to another level that made allot of folks very happy, including me. They keep saying that anyone can take Helmi's kitchen and do the same thing youve done to it and that would be acceptable. I say your wrong, Jeff took Helmi's kitchen and tweaked in ways that most of us have no clue how to do. Having that "tweaked" kitchen then allowed us to add our own OEMs and have a personalized, fast running machine. Ive tried several ROMs and Jeff's is by far the fastest running out there and generally free of bugs. I wish they would reconsider what they have done by chasing away a very talented asset to these forums and and Apache owners.

Jeff, I thank you, and everyone who has made these phone tweaks possible. Youve made using my phone a great pleasure in my day to day life. I hope you can find the time, and venue, to continue your work. Dont leave us hanging ).

I don't have a dog in this fight, and I was happy to see Jeff posting on the WM6 thread over at ppcgeeks today (something about crow casserole); I hope that means he's back in the developer community. Still, all you have to do is read Jeff's quote in post #45 above to appreciate why Helmi and other open-source guys where offended. (Just count the "I'ves" and "I's"). However good he has been at tweaking the phone, he has been very, very good at recognizing the underserved market of folks who just want a simpler device that works, and then providing them with a branded solution that was 99% built by others but included his 1% of pure magic. In that sense he's been a great marketer and entrepreneur. His vision is still needed.
