How does the official Verizon tethering package work? WModem or something else?
I have a 6700. It is the worst cell phone I've ever owned even with the tweaks. I ended up getting an LG VX8300 and keeping the 6700 on another line. However, it tethers, and carries loads of family pics and music. I'm not unhappy. My problem is I can't use PDANet. Something to do with the software on my company's laptop. JuneFabrics tech support thinks it's the VPN setup. So I need WModem and the hack. I'm running AKU 2.2 (I think) and none of the Verizon goo. I would like to downsize to just one phone. Is WModem and the hack to mask its use available on the 6800? Is it a better phone?
I've found after a year of using the 6700 for tethering that I don't need a phoneputer. A smartphone would probably do just as well, but again, I can't tether with PDANet. I have the unlimited data plan, so I don't feel guilty about tethering the 6700. I know I could hack the 8300, but I'd feel less comfortable about doing it. Any other recommendations for a good smartphone that tethers with WModem and has a decent camera?
As it is, the phone does what I need it to do. I'd like to upgrade, but don't see the need unless the new ROM makes it a better phone. Does it? Besides, I'd need a BT dongle for the laptop, which just adds another piece of harware to the equation.
The upgrade DOES make the phone better. Sprint/Verizon should release the 3.5 updates posted by 3rd parties on the inet as official patches. But, then again, they'd screw it up with their craplets anyways.

deadhead
You don't need a bluetooth dongle, you can use USB. ICS rocks - you just turn it on and plug your phone in to your comp and your computer just connects - way easier than wmodem. Also, with ICS, if you get a text message in the middle of a data session, it doesn't boot you off. I've noticed that with wmodem it will.
