I'm sorry I'm really struggling here...

I have been trying to do this for 2 days and I cant just find a simple post to work from for a newbie...

I still am trying to figure out my ROM...if I am right I got 1.5 so I am guess I am behind the times....which means I need to update...

I just turned my phone over (meaning its actually my phone now....not just a pretty new toy sitting on my desk getting wierd looks of "what the heck do i do now"...

I have not synced or nothing because from what i gather it is dumb till i get the Rom...

I didnt subscribe to EDVO or whatever...so how do I get the update?

Bare w/ me plsssss

Bud

TIA

Hi budhi...you can get official ROM from here....www.utstar.com - /pcd/downloads/

or you can flash your 6700 using custom ROM that you can find it on this forum

It's a good idea to sync to save your contacts in your pc unless your phone is so new that you haven't had the chance to develop an adequatly sized phonebook.

also, I recommend updating your rom to the Super Mario rom. it is LOADED.

Have you got your phone working with activesync on your PC yet? You'll need that before you can update the firmware.

Remember that the update will wipe out your phone - it will have no more information on it than when you took it out of the box. All software you've added will be wiped, any customizations will be gone. So copy all data from it first.

OK, first run the rom update for your specfic carrier - you'll want to do that one first - it is very straight forward.

Next run the Unified rom from PPC geeks Unified1.0 - read the instructions carefully (included in the download). It comes with two options WM6 items and .net 2.0 -I'd recommend both. You must be in bootloader mode to run it - it tells you how to get in bootloader mode (your screen will say) usb when it is plugged into the PC.
PPCGeeks.com :: View topic - Apache WM5 AKU 3.5 Unifed ROM Kitchen 1.0.0 Release!

After the update, correct your system time and go ahead with all your customization.

Apache is the generic name for the 6700.

The rom/firmware/OS is the AKU. On a PC the firmware is just for the motherboard but on the phone to oversimplify things, the firmware is mingled with the OS. The AKU is the patch level. So on your PC, when you got it, it probably ran XP. Then came SP1 to help fix some issues, then came SP2 to resolve some more, next January, you may be running SP3 to fix a few more things.

Our phones came with WM5 AKU 2.0 (i believe). Sprint officially supported AKU 2.2 which gave us push for exchange as well as an update for the radio. On PPCgeeks, they have AKU 3.5 which is a pretty significant improvement over 2.2 (just short of being WM6 in a few ways).

The unified rom is a very vanilla stable install. The customs include other mods which may help or hurt you. If you don't know what you are looking for, I'd recommend the unified rom AKU 3.5.

Keep an eye out for a new BT cab - I'm guessing it will be out in about a week to improve some of the BT abilities of the phone.

I noticed you have the Verizon phone - I would download the latest firmware available from verizon first. then apply the 3.5 from ppcgeeks. I'd try that first before messing with any custom roms.

3.5 is the AKU version - the Unified Project Team AKU 3.5 is not a custom. If it says "bobby's 3.5" or "mary's 3.5" or some such thing then it is a custom. Custome ones can be good but until you know more about your phone, I suggest the unified 3.5 which does not have any additional programs installed.

After you've installed that, correct the date, update your PRL (many threads on how to do that).

Then install adobe flash for Ppc - free (posts available about it)
install adobe acrobat reader for PPC free. There is a non adobe one that takes up less space and loads faster but is far more limited. (posts available about both)
I'd install vjcandela - let's you use your camera flash as a flashlight - LED's last longer than you'll have your phone so don't worry about using it also it does not drain your battery much at all as it is LED. (posts available about it)
I'd install MS Live Search - free (posts available about it)

Althought SPB Pocket Plus is not free, I highly recommend it - it let's you customize your today screen, make shortcuts for things you use most often and has a nice battery indicator ((posts available about it)

Enter your owner information as name: John Doe 888.555.1212 don't put your phone in the phone field but in your name field - only uses one line on your screen (use your office number so if somoene finds your phone they can call you there)

Go into settings today - remove things you don't need on your today screen - free up the real estate.

There are many more things to do but this is a good start.

gonna handle this when phone needs charge or my dongle comes in....then will do the upgrade....

Does that mean it is worthless for me to fool with the tips and tricks?

Also...I use the stock Voice for BT....dose KITCHEN have that? I noticed on another version of 3.5 it was done away with!

Play around with your phone plenty - don't worry about reformatting it, it is good to know about it. All the various firmwares support BT for voice - the only one with any issues currently is the broadcom stack although that is in development.

About to do the 3.5 kitchen...

Couple of questions:

Where are the stock OEM's that Colonel talks about?

What does this mean? It says sprint so do I need to worry?

Sorry for so many questions...but i like to know what is going on...lol...and do it right!

Verizon also has custom extrom's as well - I'd suggest searching through that one for the verizon ones. I'm not sure where the verizon list is but I'm pretty sure someone did list which ones to run.

Total Commander is free.

It isn't the end of the world if you let the custom roms run but you will be overwriting some newer files with older ones if you do let them run defeating the purpose of some of the updates. You'll probably be updating to a newer 3.5 in a couple of weeks so this is good practice for you.
