Sprint service and exchange Push feature?....charges?
Hello everyone, I am new to the Phone/pda world but not new to the IT world, as I work as a system admin....anyways
I am setting up a second exchange server at my house as a front end server to act as a push server. I got my 6700 today and am researching/reading on the push feather of exchange 2003 sp2. According to what I have found it sends an sms message to the phone,
Now my question is does Sprint charge me for each of these messages? I would hate to set all this up and get some crazy phone bill due to the pda/exchange server communications?
If you have exchange 2003 SP2 on your server, and you have aku2 or higher on you PDA, which you should. Then it does not use sms messages. The new setup is to use an HTTP connction that is kept open.
The old way, before the Messaging and Security Feature Pack was to send a silent SMS to you device to tell it to download the new message. That has been deprecated and you will be much better of using the new setup.
So you will need the $15 power vision pack on you handset to not get charged for data usage from the HTTP traffic from your mail server.
May I ask what ISP you use. I have Verizon FiOS and they block ports 80 and 25, which is really annoying. I would love you run my own exchange setup but VZ makes it more trouble than its worth.
Thanks for the reply sir! Your information makes sense and I just found some articles outlining what you have told me. As for my ISP, i use timewarner here in charlotte, NC, they have never given me any problems at all. They did warn me about relaying my outbound email from my personal domain through their email servers but they never did anything about it.
I'm sure i'll have some more questions on this phone deal! I can't wait to get home and get to play around with this bad boy!
And yes, i got the 15.00 data package, I was also hesitant that I might get charged additionally somewhere for streaming video via slingbox etc, but Sprint has assured me there will be no additional charges.
I take it this 15.00 doesn't include text messaging though, which sort of sucks

Yeah no SMS included in the $15, but considering VZ charges $45 for the same thing its a steal.
Too bad I live in an Adelphia/Comcast area, and cant get TW. It would be nice to have all ports open.
