Not freezing so much as crawling

Once in a while in the past few months my phone will just suddenly slow to an amazingly slow crawl...at first glance it seems frozen. But if you're, for example, looking at your text messages and you click the 'down' button a few times and nothing happens, then come back ten minutes later, you'll see that the next text message did indeed eventually get highlighted. And then the next message gets highlighted, and so on, in super-slow-motion. It's as if the processor speed suddenly went from 100% to 1%.

I can't think of anything new I've done to the phone that might cause this...I've upgraded from a 1GB to a 2GB SD card, but I'm on my 2nd 2GB card (the first was defective and I returned it) and it did it with both cards.

I've tried just leaving it alone for a while to see if it was busily working on some background process, and that once it got done everything would be okay again. But, as far as I can tell, once it slows down it stays slowed down. A soft reset fixes it immediately...it's just annoying. I searched around and found no messages relating to this.

So is it just me? Anyone else had this problem?

this has been discussed...

look in your running programs and see whats running in the background. just because you close out something its still running. there are 3rd party programs that will close out and STOP the program and they are discussed on this forum also.

also, you could have a program with a memory leak .. meaning its slowly eating up your program memory...

another thing is if you have emails and text messages, etc on the phone they will eat up precious memory and slow you down also. i would go in and clean out sent messages, deleted messages, sent messages, etc.. also clean your cache in PIE. again we have many threads on this subject...

I can't look to see what programs are running, since the phone is slowed down to a crawl...trying to look at active programs would take, like, an hour. And resetting the phone, of course, gets rid of all the running programs.

I already have a program to close things running in the background and show what's running on the Today screen. But, from memory, there doesn't seem to be any relation between what I've been running and these random slowdowns, although they're too infrequent for me to be able to really tell.

I do have a good number of text messages on the phone...is there a way to back up text messages to some other place where they're out of the main memory but I can still access them? I don't use PIE very much, but I'll check and see how much space the cache is taking up.

As for a memory leak, how would I find out whether or not that's a problem?

for the mem leak, just load up a program you may suspect as the culprit and watch your memory usage.. if its climbing then you know thats a problem.
theres a thread on this forum about backing up sms messages, search using say "text" and "backup" or "sms*"....

id say its a combination of programs running the background and lots of emails, text, ringers in main memory, etc thats all the culprit. sometimes that happens to my phone if im running several things. there are threads on the forum discussing how to free up memory. you should have as much program memory as you can....

It's not gradual, it just happens randomly and suddenly, usually after I've been running programs fine with no slowdowns and then I put the phone away and then come back to it...I would think if it were a problem with too many text messages or something I would have this problem all the time, or as soon as I started a big program.

But it certainly could be a combination of too many texts, plus a few memory-hog open programs, so I'll search around and see how to backup texts and see if that helps the problem.

Any alternative to the built-in program that handles text messaging? One that filters out incoming messages would be good...I get spam via text messaging.

Thanks for your help! I appreciate it.

no help on the text messaging/spam issue. i dont get any spam messages.. other than family members who like to occassionally send me a forward of some supposed funny joke of the day... there may be some ideas in the other ppc fourms here so it would not hurt to broaden your search outside of this one forum...

yeah its a gradual thing. try to turn off your data connection (not dormsant, just off) and leave the phone alone for a while.. pick it up and see if you have the same issues.

if you keep your phone cleaned (cache, make sure no extra programs running, keep yur program memory free, etc) you should have noe issues. also if you use a today screen plugin that wlll definately cause slow downs... i have had SPB for many years and i just gave up on using it on this phone because of the smaller memory (the 660x had more memory) and it was a resource hog. so i have the generic today screen and no extra junk on the phone. even took off XCPU scalar and i have had that for years also.. i alsouse thunderhawk vs PIE so i keep those issues at bay, plus TH is better.

Good idea, I had posted about text spam in this forum once before without much luck, but I hadn't thought about looking in all forums...thanks!

The only today screen things I have going on are SPB backup and a quicklauncher...they've both been around a while, although i did recently update the launcher...i spose that could have something to do with it...anyway, I'll keep investigating. Thanks!

definately keep the thread updated on anything you find out. i know SPB has caused others issues in the past and it kind of slowed things down for me...
