can someone break down for me exactly what this is...and why people want to use it..

my impression is that it's like its own operating system...like wiping your computer and installing a different version of windows. There's a lot of lingo flying around so what does 3.5 refer to?

Forgive my "newb-ness"...I've had this phone for 2 days and I'm already tearing it down to the guts

Its basically an upgrade to the handset OS. Someone said like going from WIN98 to WIN98SE. Its not WM6, but probably as close as we will get with the 6700.

Nope, you will need to redefine your active sync relationship and decide what to sync: Contacts, Calendar, Email, Notes, files, etc. That part will happen thru A/S.

Then you get to reload the software you had on the handset before you upgraded the ROM.

Don't try restoring a backup file as that will corrupt some of the ROM files from the recent upgrade.

Good Luck,

Bob Duckworth

get off the fence

Just do it. I finally did it last week. I went from the latest official rom to this one and I'm not lookin' back. This is more like I expected the phone to be out of the box. It is much more responsive. Oh yeah...and more room for plug ins

A couple questions.

Is there no speed dial in the included phone skin and is there one that will work with this rom that does have one?

When loading the rom just after the hard reset, when the phone starts to DL your carriers updates it was suggested to hit soft reset so you dont load any of these. Will the phone auto update its time if you dont load those carrier updates? My clock seems to be a bit off at times.

I have a registered version of 1 Calc. Theres no way to delete the 1 Calc that is in the rom easily is there? I ask because it wont let me load the full version as it sees the lite version already installed.

Thats it for now I guess. Nice rom! Thank you.

There is a later version that does not have the calculator and which has speed dial with the phone skin. It was just posted a few days ago. I haven't noticed any issues with the time updates.

I have not upgraded my ROM since I got my phone in October, and that may have been with an update that came out well before October. If I use this kirvin update, will it properly update all my various antenna and phone level (not windows mobile) roms to the proper current version or do I need to do any intermediate update, like the one leaked by starcom a few months ago to allow data roaming, calls to interrupt evdo, etc?

How does this installer get the proper Sprint specific roms for my phone, does it include them or read them from my previous install. If so, do I need to do a newer intermediate update?

There is mention of soft reseting to stop sprint roms from installing. Do i want to stop them? Do they use way too much memory, or just a little, which might be worth it to many who would give a little memory for less headaches with data connection not working and various other stuff being off.

Will this install mess up my data connection? If so, does anyone have sprint data fixing instructions? Do I need to record some passwords before I reset?

Does this include a2dp? Can I listen to audiobooks through a bluetooth mono one-ear headset with it? The main reason I need to upgrade is that my wired headphone port broke so I need to get bluetooth working for headphones.

What are the 2 soft buttons for hard reset. I am thinking they are the two '-' buttons but I dont remember if it has to be the ones on the keyboard or if the screen ones work too.

Are there any other rom releases I should consider?

Won't work at all for me

I have a Verizon xv6700

I cannot get either update posted in this thread to work. Both give me error codes on my primary computer, but that's running Vista, so that could be the problem.

So I went to use a different machine with no PPC software installed on it, tried multiple ways, with both updates and the Kirvin update simply doesn't do anything. It acts like it did the update but it clearly didn't and in the end my phone is exactly the same as if I did a hard reset. The one posted just above me won't even run on her machine due to some missing .dll file.

Again, that computer doesn't have any PPC software/drivers set up except what it installed when I plugged the phone in during the dark screen USB mode. It is always unable to find driver software when I plug the phone in when it's turned on normally.

Any ideas? Please?

For Vista info. I believe that someone got it working on a Vista PC.

To run the update with Windows XP, I believe you must have Microsoft ActiveSync software installed. The missing dll is a part of ActiveSync. So, if you have Vista, this is just another pain. When you fire up or borrow that old XP machine, you also have to install MS Activesync on it, if it doesnt have it already. You dont need to do a seperate sync with the XP machine though if you already synced with Vista to save your contacts etc. You can install activesync after your PPC is in bootloader mode and it will work fine. That is what I did.

I hope they fix the Vista issue though, because it is a pain.

I just went ahead and did the update. My phone seems to be working well. I had to use some old BTToggle program to get it to read audiobooks through my mono bluetooth headset. If anyone knows a better solution for that, let me know.

ROM Update on Vista

If you want to use Vista to flash ROMS, follow these simple steps.

RUU on Vista: It can be done... the ultimate guide! - MoDaCo

I have been using it for a while with much success!

Thank you everyone for the links pointing to doing this on Vista. I couldn't get ActiveSync successfully installed on the other computer (The computer wouldn't boot after I installed it... very strange, not a BSOD, just a black screen instead of a desktop...)

I am, however, successfully installing the ROM upgrade on my Vista machine now! I haven't visited this forum in a while, glad the community is still so helpful on this device!

One thing though, I can't seem to get my Extended ROM open after using this update. Does this update combine the Extended ROM with the main memory or do I have to do something extra to get it unlocked with this update?
