Hello, I am new here. I read all the threads about Removing Junkware from the PPC 6700. I came across another method and I was wondering if anyone has tried it?
1. Download and install Total Commander http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm ( ARM/XSCALE/PXA version)
2. Open Total Commander, in the address bar type: /extended_rom/
3. re-run all the CABs except for the remove_uninstaller cab.
4. Go to Remove Programs in Settings and all the uninstallers will be there.
You can then run the uninstallers as the developers of the "spam" intended.
This can be done at any time, you never need to hard reset to do this...
The guy's name that wrote these instructions is Christopher Price.
Can anyone verify that this will work? And if so, on the instructions to do this he says to "re-run" the all the CABS, but I am not sure how to do that using "Total Commander".
I would like to remove the junkware but not do a hard reset. I have a lot of programs installed and each has specific settings.
I have Total Commander on my PPC 6700 installed on the main storage memory. When I go to Programs and open Total Commander, I type in the address bar: /extended_rom/
Then I am not sure what to do? Do I highlight the CAB and click "File" on the bottom of the Total Commander screen, then click "re-load"? Or do I highlight and hold down with the stylus on the CAB and then click "open"? I am just not sure what "re-run" means.
Yes, I do this to remove the junkware and it works fine. Just scroll to the CAB and push in joystick to run. This runs the installation (install to Device) and then the program will appear in Remove Programs.
I just tried it and I cannot see the files in Remove Programs. I tried only the AudibleSample.s.... , maybe that is the wrong file? I did what you said and I installed the CAB file to the Storage Memory, but it was not in Remove Programs.
Basically, I want to remove: Action Info, Get Biz Conn, Audible Player, Get Good, and Sprint Software Store. Can you tell me the way those CAB files look in Total Commander? Also, before I even used Total Commander I deleted the sample files in Audible Player manually, and that freed up about 4MB, but I want the thing totally off my PPC, the icon and everything, what am I doing wrong?
Also, I just tried to remove the GetGL.CAB, and the Getmail.pp200..CAB and I was successful, they were in Remove Programs, should I have deleted the Getmailppc200..CAB?
In File Explorer, under Program Files I still see the Audible Player Folder, Action Engine Folder, and the Software Store Folder, will these ever go away?
Hello again, I think that I must not have done this right. I recently purchased MEM MAID and used it to look at all my files. I found that under program files, in the Action Engine Folder, and then in the AE Common Folder I still have 337.40kb file being used somehow. Also, in program files, Tools folder I have a 28.40kb file still there. These files are not able to be seen in the Files Explorer program.
Here is a list of the CAB files that I ran and removed:
1. AudibleSample.s...CAB 4.5M
2. Fetch.CAB 375.2k
3. GetGL.CAB 22.1k
4. Getmail.ppc200...CAB 46.9k
5. sprint_software...CAB 658.0k
6. WTLAudibleplay...CAB 333.8k
There are a lot of other CAB's there, but I don't know which ones to re-run and remove. I like the way my PPC looks stock, but I don't want the junkware. Does anyone know how come this process didn't remove the AEComman folder and the Tools folder contents?
What CAB's do I still need to re-run to get rid of those?
Thanks
The list that I removed was your 2 thru 6. The audible samples doen't install a program, so no program to remove. I deleted the directory, the same for any directory that remained after removing the programs.
Oh, so do you suggest that I delete the folders that are already empty in Program Files? When you say "directory", is that the same as the folder icon? I am afraid that if I delete the folders that are in Program Files (Action Engine, Audible Player, Software Store, Tools, and Sprint) that they will never be able to come back if I have to do a hard reset. Also, if I delete the Action Engine Folder, it still has the AE Common Folder with a 337.40kb file, and the Tools folder still has a 28.40kb file there, so those KB's will not be re-allocated to the Storage Memory if they are deleted in this manner. Right?
But they are not visible in File Explorer, only in MemMaid. I am losing my mind over 365.80 kb's of memory, but I need it. Plus, I don't want to delete the folder with an invisible file in it.
Do you think there is some kind of CAB that I missed? I tried re-running them and removing them all again and I got the same result. The two files are still in AECommon and Tools. Should I just delete them, the folders I mean?
You seem to be very knowledgeable and I really appreciate the help.
Thanks
Yes, directory or folder it's the same. The left over folder may contain DLLs that are no longer needed.
I have 19.74 MB storage memory in use. If I install Audible Player then I have 20.08 MB storage memory in use. When I uninstall I'm back to 19.74 MB in use. The uninstall did not leave the folder behind.
But some uninstalls may leave the folder behind. Go ahead and delete it.
I kept the Tools folder because I did not associate this to the programs that I uninstalled (action engine, audible player, software store).
If you run into problems you can always re-install them.
Ok, I got it. I deleted the folders using MemMaid and it freed up the 337.40kb file. Thanks again. But now I am afraid to delete the "Tools" Folder. When I look into it there are no files visible, but it has that annoying 28.40 kb file hanging on there. Since you didn't delete "Tools" Folder I am thinking that maybe I shouldn't, what's your take? By the way, is the "Tools" Folder the one that contains GetMail and GetBizConn?
I was just wondering, why are so many people doing a hard reset and not using this method? It seems a lot easier this way, with the same results too.
Thanks
I know this is unrelated, but I did a search and couldn't find the answer.
Can I remove the battery without causing a Hard Reset, and if so, how long do I have before I lose all information? What will removing the battery do? What are the procedures for removing it?
Thanks
